Great opportunity to be here.
I'm honored. I'd like you to take your Bibles
and turn to Psalm 100. A few weeks ago as I was preparing
God spoke to my heart from this passage, and trust God will speak
to your heart. While you're turning, let me
encourage you teenagers, you can give to missions. Deny yourself
that extra pop or coffee or granola bar or something else, and say,
you know, I can give something to missions. God will bless you
for that. Everybody can be a part. And
let me say to you, those who are visiting or somebody else,
that the devil wants to try to you to be critical about talking
about money. You know, they talk about it
at the bank or the grocery store, you know, or any place else.
And it costs money to do God's work. And anything that's given
to missions is not staying here. It's not for this church. It's
something that's going out. And so keep that in mind. It's going to reach the gospel.
If I was living in this area, this is the church that I'd want
to go to. And don't take for granted this
church. There's more people in the choir
that's in my church. You know, I've been pastoring
a little church on a gravel road out in the middle of nowhere.
There's more people in the choir that's in the average church
across Canada, Baptist Church. And so, God has done great things
here through you. And let me encourage you to be
faithful. And I want to thank the choir
for the wonderful job and the men's singing. And thank you
for the offertory and everything. I've sensed God's presence here
already this morning. And I hope that you have. And
if not, I hope, before we're done, that you'll pray with me
and say, speak to my heart, Lord. do something in my life here
today. If you've found your place in
Psalm 11, I did want to tell you that it's been a blessing
to be here. I want to thank you for the new suit. I'm going to
wear a different one tomorrow, not tonight, that I got yesterday,
and I'm thankful for your generous give to all the missionaries.
Psalms 11 is a great passage, and I hope that God will use
it this morning in your heart. David is the author, and I believe
it was in a time of, we're getting just a little bit of a ring,
fellas. It was in a time when David was fearful, when David
was fleeing, when the enemy was attacking. And let's see what
he says. In the Lord put I my trust. How
say you to my soul, flee as the bird to your mountains? For lo,
the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the
string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart. If the foundations be destroyed,
what can the righteous do? If the foundations be destroyed,
what can the righteous do? The Lord is in his holy temple. Amen for that. The Lord's throne
is in heaven. His eyes behold, his eyelids
try the children of men. The Lord trieth the righteous,
but the wicked in him that love violence. His soul hateth. Upon the wicked he shall rain
snares. Upon the wicked he shall rain
fire and brimstone. Upon the wicked, an horrible
tempest. This shall be the portion of
their cup. Aren't you glad you're saved
here this morning? God's wrath has been delivered
because you've put your trust in Jesus and his precious blood
has washed away our sins. For the righteous Lord loveth
righteousness. His countenance, thus behold,
the upright. As I go to pray, I hope that
you'll pray with me. Ask God to help me and ask God
to help you. Lord, we're thankful for your
word today. We're thankful for this place
and all you've done. We thank you, Lord, that you're
on your throne today. And even though it's a mess down
here, you're still in control. We humbly ourselves before you,
Lord, and ask you to open our eyes and speak to our hearts.
We pray your Holy Spirit would fill us and challenge us to do
more for you. And we just pray for preachers
across this land that are preaching and around the world. We thank
you for these missionaries that are here. We pray you'd bless
them and all the ones that are being supported. And Lord, we
pray for your soon return, that we might be with you. In Jesus'
name, amen. Look at verse three, if you would. If the foundations be destroyed,
what can the righteous do? If the foundations be destroyed,
what can the righteous do? If the foundations be destroyed,
what can the righteous do? What can we do? Well, you know,
David didn't have all the scriptures that we have today. Well, I've
seen in my life, last 50 some years, our world is in a downward
spiral. Our world has turned away from
God and the things of God. Our world doesn't want to believe
the Bible. It doesn't want to believe about
the cross. I was witnessing it to a man
there in Winnipeg yesterday, and he said, well, I'm an agnostic. And then he said to me, do you
know what that is? I said, yeah, that's why I'm
here to let you know that you can know there's a God, you can
be saved, and you don't have to parade around as somebody
that you can't know. Yes, you can know. I met the
Lord 54 years ago as he convicted me as a lost sinner in 1970,
and trusted the Lord as my Savior. And the day I got saved, I felt
God's calling on my life to serve Him, and I surrendered to that.
If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? You
know, there's been a lot of wicked times, other than our times.
We can think about the days of Noah. And the Bible says God
was grieved because their hearts and minds were on evil continually. There's been a lot of times,
you can think about the times of Nehemiah as he went back to
rebuild the walls and to rebuild the wills of the people to worship
God and to serve God. We need that today. We have a
A government that's anti-Christian. We have a society that's... Salvation,
by the way, is not going to come from Ottawa. Salvation is not
going to come from Washington. Salvation is going to come from
God. And we need His help today. Now you might ask in your mind,
what is a foundation? For some of you young people,
my dad was a builder. I've done a lot of building and
foundations. You know, a foundation is something
you don't see, but it's very important. A foundation is down
underneath. And it's concrete and steel that's
holding everything else together. Now my house in Duran, Michigan
was built in 1915. And they didn't take care of
the foundation, that's why some of the floors are like that.
That's why if you look at the doorway, I've had to work to
get the door shut. And if you look at the edges
of the doors, there's cracks going up. You know, if you look
at the roof line, you can see things aren't straight and plumb
and level. What's the reason for that? Because
the foundation is not good. The foundation is what holds
everything together. Now, we might not be able to
see Jesus, but one day we will, but he's the one that's holding
all things together. God made the earth, and he hung
it out there on nothing and told it to stay there, and it did.
And God is the owner, and you were made and created by God. You know, Genesis 1-1 says, in
the beginning, God. There about verse 26 and 27 of
Genesis chapter 1 the Bible says God made Adam and Eve not Adam
and Steve and God wants us to understand that we are to be
fruitful and to multiply and somehow with all the sex education
People don't realize that you can't multiply with two men or
two women God made it a man and a woman and And that's what the
children need. And the foundations have been
destroyed because of divorce. The foundations have been destroyed
because of atheism and humanism and a whole lot of other isms,
whether it be communism or... The foundations are being destroyed
because of Satanism. The devil wants to oppose you
and come between you and this church. The devil wants to oppose
you and have something come between you and your pastor. You know,
I've been with your pastor all over, from all kinds of trips. We went to Israel, all these
different places. You know, your pastor's always
a good testimony to me. You know, I get in trouble, I
get problems and say something, do something wrong, I can call
Pastor Sullivan. He'll help me. You know, the
pastor will help you. And if you mess up, you can get
right with God and you can get forgiven. Amen? So many people
mess up as Christians and they're not willing to make it right. Get right. You know, I've always
said to our people, if I've wronged you, if I've hurt you, you let
me know. I will apologize. You know, humbling
yourself is always good. And that's one of the answers.
You know, the Bible says in 2 Chronicles 7-14, I want you to quote it
with me. If my people, which are called
by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and
turn from their wicked ways, then we will hear from heaven. God will forgive our sins. God
will heal our land. We need revival in Canada. That's gonna help build the foundations. See, we're talking about foundations
in this passage. We're talking about the foundation
of society. David was an honorable man, a
man after God's own heart. David killed Goliath. David had
fought against the enemy, and yet they were trying to kill
him. See, we're in a society today when wrong is right and
right is wrong. And anybody that stands up for
right is criticized. Anybody that tries to do right
is criticized. But if you don't do anything,
you'll still be criticized. So you might as well just serve
the Lord. You know, it's not your pastor's job to try to please
you. It's his job to please the Lord. And it's not your job to try
to please other people. It's your job to try to please
the Lord. You know, if you please the Lord,
your parents will be happy. If you please the Lord, your
pastor will be happy. And we need to please the Lord. Why is there so much trouble?
I talk to people, they say, boy, this world's in a mess. Boy,
we got lots of problems. But they have no idea what the
problem is. I have a classmate, I had five classmates that I've
been friends with, some more than others, but died last year.
My sister died of cancer. You know, when people close to
you die, it makes you think, you know, we're gonna die one
of these days, too. Huh? We're not gonna live forever.
I'm 67. I hope the Lord will give me a few more years. We
have no guarantee of tomorrow. The Bible says boast not thyself
of tomorrow, for knowest not what a day may bring forth. We need to serve God today the
best we can. We need to get right with the
Lord and stay right with the Lord and be serving the Lord. In our society, foundations have
been destroyed because of a lack of belief in God. It's been destroyed
because they turned from the truth of God's holy word. It's been destroyed because of
the lack of wanting to keep the Ten Commandments. You know, in
the United States, they've tried to get the Ten Commandments out
of government buildings. In the United States, they've
turned away from God into public schools. You know, in the United
States, they've pushed abortion to kill and murder the innocent. And the Bible says, God will
not pardon the shedding of innocent blood. Is there anything more
innocent than a little child? You know, when it comes to voting,
there's only two things that matter. Are they pro-Israel? Because God says he'll bless
those that bless Israel. And secondly, do they take a
stand against abortion? How can we expect to be blessed
of God when in the United States, there are 60-something million
babies that have been killed? You think of it. and their blood
is crying out to God for judgment. Let me say to you, judgment is
here. Judgment is knocking at the door
and our time is short. Jesus is coming back. So there's
an urgency for each one of us to live for the Lord and to be
a witness for the Lord and do as much as we can in the time
we have left. You know, the church has lost
its influence in society. It used to be that people went
to church, and if they didn't go to church, they had a reverence
for God's house and God's day, you know. They wouldn't mow the
lawn, there wouldn't be any sports. We were living in London, Ontario,
and on the way to church, there was a huge, I don't know what
you call it, sports place, for lack of a better word, and anyway,
on that field, out there in the field, there would be hundreds
of boys and girls playing football or soccer or whatever it was
they were playing, and moms and dads would be sitting on these
aluminum benches when we went by for Sunday school, and we'd
come back from church a couple hours later, they're still sitting
on those benches, and it might be raining, it might be snowing,
Cold, and yet they're sitting there. You know, they're more
dedicated to their false gods than most Christians are. It's
raining, they're there. It's cold, they're there. You
know, false gods have risen up all around us. I'm talking about
the God of money and greed and the God of lust. and immorality,
the gods of sports. There's so many false gods that
are breaking down the home, the breaking up of marriage, the
turning from kindness, love and respect to violence and hatred
and murder. We never had any children being
shot and killed in the schools when I was in schools. Then what's
happened? They kick God out of school.
Tell us we're an animal. Tells there is no accountability
to God. And why do we wonder why we see
the mess that we're in? We need God. Why is there trouble? Because the foundations have
been destroyed. The foundation of God and His
holiness. You know, the outstanding characteristic
of God is not love. Although He is love, the Bible
tells the outstanding characteristic of God is holiness. We don't know much about holiness
down here, but God is holy, and God wants us to be holy, and
the only way we can be holy is through trusting Jesus Christ,
our personal Savior. You know, I meet a lot of people,
talk to a lot of people, and people say, well, I think I'd
go to heaven, you know, and I say, well, why do you think you would?
Well, I'm a pretty good person. Somebody tells you that, they're
lost. for all the sin and come short of the glory of God. The
Bible says there's none good, no, not one. The only good one
that there ever was was the Lord Jesus and we crucified him. And
of course, God used it. for us to be saved. You put your
faith in Christ. Why do we use John and Romans?
Well, turn to the book of John for just a moment and say, why
are we printing John and Romans? Isn't that exciting? 76,000,
however many it is, have been made. Thank you for working on it.
I folded just a few. I wanted to get involved in it,
but thank you for... And John chapter 1 and verse
1 says, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. And verse 12 says, But as many
as received Him, to them gave he power to become the sons of
God. John 1 12. Have you received
the Lord in your heart as your personal Savior? If you have,
God will give you power to live victoriously and to live for
Him. Turn over a couple other pages
if you would. Go to John chapter 1 and jumping
ahead my message and I sometimes do better if I don't even look
at my notes But sometimes it is good to have notes to John
1 and verse 5 and verse 24 John 5 24 I go back up pick up a few
pieces. That's alright Only those people
up there who looked at my sermon John 5 24 very nice saying to
you Very, very last day unto he that heareth my word, and
believeth on him that sent me, hath what? Temporary life. Is that what it says? Conditional
life. If you hold out to the end. Well,
you never held out in the beginning. First Peter tells us that we're
kept by the power of God. He's the one that's holding us.
Aren't you thankful for that? And shall not come into condemnation,
but passed from death unto life. Now, hold your hand there and
stay right there for a minute, and I just want to back up to
a couple points that I missed. But as we think about the foundations,
who built the foundations? I'd like to read a verse in 28.16
for you. Isaiah 28.16 says, Therefore,
thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion, Zion, a fountain,
a stone, tride, a precious stone, cornerstone, a sure foundation. God made a sure foundation. I'm
glad 50 some years ago when the Lord lifted me up out of the
miry clay of self and sin and religion and placed me on a solid
rock, amen, and established our goings and put a new song in
our mouth. Rock and roll music is an old
song of the devil. God wants us to have a new song
of praise To him that will cause us to worship him and who is
that? Foundation as we heard brother
Smith in first Corinthians 3 the Bible tells us that Jesus is
the chief cornerstone. I Corinthians 3, 11, for other
foundation can no man lay than that is laid which is Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is the foundation. He's the way the truth and the
life no man come to the father But by him what is the foundation
who built the foundation? Who is the foundation? I like
what it says in Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 20 and are built
upon the foundation of the Apostles the prophets Jesus Christ himself
being the chief cornerstone Jesus is the chief cornerstone that
we're to build our life upon. 2 Timothy 2 says, nevertheless,
the foundation of God, stand assured. The man has rejected
the foundation. What can we do? Let's go to the
second part of my message. If the foundation be destroyed,
what can the righteous do? What can we do? Well, we quoted
already about 2 Chronicles 7, 14. We can humble ourselves. We can pray. We can seek God's
face. You know, the Bible says men
ought always to pray and not to faint. Why are people fainting? Because
they're not praying. What about your prayer life?
Seeking God's face. I like to sing to the Lord. Make
thy face to shine upon my servant. Make thy face to shine upon me,
Lord. What does that mean? When God's
face is shining upon you, it's God's blessing on your life.
Do you want to be blessed of the Lord? Well, why don't you
ask God to bless you? Lord, I need your blessing. Need
your power. I need your help to be a witness. What can we do? Proverbs 22 6
train up a child and away should go when he's old and not depart
from listen You can train your children one of the best things
my wife and ever and I ever did was training our children to
live for God and If I die today, my two sons are still preaching.
If I die today, my son-in-laws are still preaching and serving
God and our daughters. Listen, train your children to
love God. You know how you do that? By
loving God first yourself. You can't fool your kids. I was
taught by Brother Vineyard that you should stand by the front
door and shake hands with people. And we had a lot of doors, and
so people that didn't want to shake hands, they didn't come
in that door. Unfortunately, there's always something like
that. But some would come in. You know, children are not hypocrites
like adults are. And so parents come by and shake
your hand. They're all high pastors, they're
glad to see it. And the kids come in. Something happened this morning.
The devil's always trying to stir up something on Sunday morning.
I helped the wife, you know, bathe the kids on Saturday. We
got all the clothes laid out and every shoe, there's always
gonna be one shoe, you know. Get every shoe laid out and get
everything and try to be prepared because we're going to worship
the Lord. Amen? Our kids, we never question if
we're gonna go to church or not. There was never any question
if we're gonna have family altar. There wasn't any question about,
we settled some of those things because we wanted our children.
You know another thing we can do? Look at 1 Corinthians 1. Being a Bible preaching church,
the church has lost its influence and today people don't think
that going to church is important. You'll never be a successful
fruitful Christian, if you forsake the assembly of self together.
We need each other. We need to encourage one another.
We need to pray for one another. And the Bible says in 1 Corinthians
1, 18, for the preaching of the cross is to them that perish
foolishness, but to us that are saved, it's what? The power of
God. You mean you go to church Sunday
morning and Sunday night and Wednesday and Thursday? Well, the Bible says daily in
the temple and every house they cease not to teach and preach
Jesus Christ. We're just trying to make a Bible
Christian out of you. You can help us rebuild the foundation
as Nehemiah rebuilt the walls and the wills of the people.
How can we rebuild the foundation when the loss to Jesus Christ,
if you're still in John, where I was reading from a minute ago,
if you go to John 15, it talks about fruit. How much spiritual
fruit? Are you bearing? You know, when
you say amen, that's bearing fruit according to Hebrews 13.
Can I hear you say amen? You know, if you praise the Lord,
I wanna bear fruit for God. You want somebody to Christ.
Look at what John 15 and verse 16 says, you have not chosen
me, but I've chosen you and ordained you that you should go and bring
forth what? You know, when you're given to
the missionaries and they lead somebody to Christ, that eternal
soul, you're gonna be rewarded for that. You know, Daniel 12,
verse three says, they that turn many to righteousness shall shine
as the stars forever and ever. Win the loss to Christ, be a
soul winner. What can we do to rebuild the
foundations? Don't believe the lies of the
devil. Hide God's word in your heart.
Matthew 4, four, man should not live by bread alone, but by every
word. Psalms 119, 9 to 11, Wherewithal
shall a young man cleanse his way, by taking heed according
to thy word. Thy word hath I hid in my heart. Not just in your head. It's got
to move from your head down to your heart. To where you love
it. To where you're excited about it. Are you excited about meeting
with the Lord in the morning or whenever you meet with the
Lord? You know, I do like Brother Sekansky, I go to the altar many
times every day and pray and read God's word. We can't get
enough of it. 1 Peter 2, 2, I know there's
a lot of babies around here, that's a good thing. 1 Peter
2, 2 says, as newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the word. What for? That you might grow.
Spiritually, how can we rebuild these foundations by revival
and praying for it, by teaching our children, by being in a preaching
church to overcome the wickedness of this world, by loving the
Bible and memorizing it and hiding it in our hearts, by not believing
the lies of the devil. Train up a child, train up adults. Thank God you've got a Bible
college. that are trying to train up disciples, train up people
that will live for the Lord. You ought to be a part of the
Bible College and learn the Bible. You ought to take up some classes.
It'll encourage you. It'll help you to grow. Don't
be satisfied just to sit. God wants you not just sitting
on your blessed assurance, but wanting you to move forward for
God. And say, I want to be a good
soldier for Jesus Christ. It's hard for me. Well, yeah,
it will be, but that'll help you. You can do it with God's
grace. To train up disciples, see what
can I do to help rebuild the foundations? Put on the whole
armor of God, Ephesians 6 says, be strong in the Lord, the power
is might, put on the whole armor of God. What do you need that
for? Because Psalms 1 said that the demons and the devils and
the wicked were shooting arrows at you. I need to lift up the
shield of faith. It'll block those fiery darts
of the wicked. And what can we do? We can start
churches. Been exciting hearing testimonies
of the missionaries, and all the churches you've started.
Many of mine went to, used to be deacons here, and now they're
pastors, and I've went and preached for them. What a blessing. What
an encouragement. How many churches actually starting
churches? How many churches are actually
training disciples? This church is. Praise God. But most churches aren't. They're
not interested in that. They've got their three and no
more, and they're not interested in anybody else coming. I've
visited churches and sat down at the front, you know, and nobody
was friendly at all. Nobody shook our hands or anything.
And they said, well, we have a guest preacher here. And everybody,
oh, Brother Bowman, it's so good to see you. Why didn't you welcome
me earlier? If a visitor comes, we ought to show them the love
of Christ. Say, well, they're a wicked sinner. The wickedest
sinner ought to be welcome here. This is a hospital for the lost. Don't judge people the way they
come. They don't know. They've never been saved. You
don't expect a baby to get up and wash the dishes and make
the meal, do you? I mean, they've got to be grown.
Aren't you glad that somebody loved you enough to bring you
along a little bit in the faith? And we've got to be patient with
new Christians. They look around. They see how
other people are dressed. A week or two later, they'll
change. You don't have to tell them.
Let the Holy Spirit do that. You go and tell them, you'll
just run them off. What can we do? Matthew 28, Mark 16. Go into all the world and preach
the gospel. How are you going to do that? Support missionaries. This is a missionary conference.
This is about rebuilding the walls. This is about restoring
the foundation that the foundations be destroyed. What can the righteous
do? Go back to Psalm 11 and I'm done. I want you to think of one more
thought. I've given you some negative things. I've given you
some discouraging things. Don't listen to the news. They're
not telling you the truth anyway. Will Rogers says, how do you
know when a politician is lying? When their lips are moving. They
don't tell you the truth anyway. Why get discouraged about that?
David said in Psalms 11 and verse three, if the foundations be
destroyed, what can the righteous do? And then he says, the Lord
is in his holy temple. Things are a mess down here,
but God is still on his throne. And God is still in control.
And God is still able to bring revival. And God is still able
to save the lost. And God is still able to send
out missionaries. The truth is, when I came to
Canada as a missionary, I didn't want to come. I sent 76 resumes
out, all in the states except for two. And both of the ones
in Canada called. But you know, it's not about
what you want to do. It's about what God wants to do. Let me
tell you something. When you do what God wants you
to do, you'll be happy. You'll be blessed. Would you
bow your heads? You close your eyes and just ask the Lord, have
you been born again? Are you a child of the King?
Are you serving the Lord? What does God want you to do?
What about missions? Everybody could do a little bit
more so you can take on another missionary Lord bless now in
the invitation Speak to each and every heart
