Hello there, I am Pastor Calvin Lindstrom with Christian Liberty Academy School System. Welcome to There's No Place Like Home. In the next three weeks, I'm going to be sharing three passages that I believe are foundational for Christian education and homeschooling. The first passage is Deuteronomy 6. It is difficult to take just a few verses from this chapter because the entire chapter is so rich. Let us consider the first part of Deuteronomy 6. Now in Deuteronomy 5, we have a repetition of the Ten Commandments. Then Deuteronomy 6 emphasizes how important it is that God's revelation be passed on to the next generation. In verse 4, we have what is called the Shema, the call for Israel to hear. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. This central truth is followed by the greatest command in Scripture, verse 5. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And then, verses 6-9 stress how God's truth must not just be reserved for one day of the week, but it must be integrated into all aspects of life. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. The verb translated as teach them diligently comes from a Hebrew verb used only one time in the Old Testament. Diligently is a good translation. The verb means to recite again and again. This passage sets a very high standard for parents. No, we cannot change the hearts of our children. God must work in their hearts. but we are responsible for making sure that they are constantly being exposed to God's truth. This is why I believe that Christian education is demanded by Scripture. Otherwise, children will be provided each day six to eight hours of humanistic, anti-Christian education. And for those that are seeking to provide a Christ-centered education for their children, be careful that you do not boast or rest in your own efforts. We must always seek to trust in God's work, not our own efforts. May the Lord bless you and your family as you think on these things, as you seek to serve the Lord this day. For Christian Liberty Academy School System, I am Pastor Calvin Lindstrom. May God bless.
