Good morning, friends. I am Pastor Calvin Lindstrom with Christian Liberty Academy School System. Welcome to There's No Place Like Home. Well, today our small church celebrates its 54th anniversary. We were established in 1965, so that makes 54 years today. Last week, I discussed some of the history of my father's work in education, and I want to continue to discuss some of his history today. Now we know that in the 1960s and 70s there were families who already were homeschooling, but certainly it was not as common as it is today. Christian schools also at this time were growing, but not all families, either because of geography or finances, could send their children to a Christian school. So there was a need for Christian education that needed to be met, and it would be met through homeschooling. My dad and others in our church sought to meet this need, and I want to share four keys to home education, four keys to our own ministry and work in this field. First, parents have the responsibility and authority to teach their children. Parents have the responsibility and authority to teach their children. Ultimately, they don't need the permission of the state. God has given this responsibility to parents. It's not even given to the church. The church, of course, is to teach God's word. This gives help and encouragement to both parents and to children. But ultimately, the responsibility for education is given to parents. And it is easy for parents to give this up to others. But all parents need to recognize God has given them this calling. They have a responsibility. They also have authority in this matter. Well, second, you need books and materials. You need a curriculum. Now, this has been met in a variety of ways. Again, in the early days, there was not nearly as much in terms of books and materials as there is today. Today, there's a plethora of resources we know, but in those early days, what could you use? Well, there were some books. My dad put together some of the books that we would use at our own Christian school. He put together the resources that parents needed, and parents had to take what was available and go with it. Now, thankfully, as I say, much has been developed specifically for home education, but books that would be used in the typical classroom could be used, maybe a little bit harder to use, but good books and materials are needed, and thankfully, these are now available. Well, third, parents must embrace the challenge. Parents must be not only willing, but then embrace the challenge to teach their children. And depending on your family dynamic, this might be a more pleasant, it might be a more difficult experience, depending on how many children you have, the different grade levels. We would never say homeschooling is easy. We don't do it because it is always pleasant. We do it because we believe God has given us authority. We believe this is the best choice for our children. We embrace the challenge and by God's grace, we seek to do our very best in pouring ourselves into our children. We must do this through the strength that our Lord gives. Well, fourth, students themselves also must be willing to embrace the challenge. And this is not always easy for students. They see their peers, their friends go to either maybe a Christian school or even to the public schools, and they want something more in some cases. You know, there is something that you do give up. But there is something also that you gain by being homeschooled. And when you embrace the challenge, the discipline that comes through home education, more is expected of you in most cases. You have to be more self-disciplined. You don't have someone with a stick, besides your parents, always on top of you. And that dynamic can be more difficult. But what a blessing. It is when students recognize this is what God has called me to do. And as we looked in Ephesians 6 a few weeks ago, when your obedience is in the Lord's students, you must be willing to embrace this challenge. This is what God has called your family to do. Don't fight against it. Again, maybe not every day is as enjoyable as you would like it to be, but you see the fruit, you see the grace of God. Again, what we enjoy today, over 50 years later, in terms of the freedom, in terms of the incredible choices available in homeschooling, are truly a great blessing from the Lord. My friends, let's continue to be vigilant. Let us be thankful. Let us pour ourselves into this great work. for Christian Liberty Academy School System. I am Pastor Calvin Lindstrom. See you next Thursday, Lord willing, at 8.30 a.m. Central Time. May God bless.
