Wednesday nights is one of my favorite services, really. I just love to teach. I love to teach the Bible. And so I love when the lights click and all that stuff. I don't know if you've ever had the opportunity to teach or you've taught Sunday school, and then when your pupils get it, the students, when they get it, it just encourages you. So I guess it's just as much of a mutual benefit to me as it is you. in that regard, because it kind of encourages you to go back and study even some more. So if you will, let's take our Bibles here tonight. Let's come to Matthew chapter number 10. Matthew chapter number 10, and... When I taught these lessons years and years ago, I taught all of it at one time. So this is like the third or fourth service now. It just seems like over the years, you just add this or you add that and things. And so it just, I guess the Lord shows you some different things as well. So it just kinda, but I hope you've gotten something out of the messages. And so we're gonna continue tonight on Tongue Signs and Healing. and we'll probably finish it up tonight. I say probably because that leaves me some room for error. But in Matthew chapter number 10, what we're basically talking about is the charismatic movement. That's what we're talking about. We might be kind of charismatic in some form and fashion, but we're not a part of the charismatic movement. The charismatic movement believes in tongues, signs, and wonders, and dreams and visions and God told me to come to you and tell you and God wanted me to drop this into your spirit. You've probably heard the preachers talk like that and if God wants to tell me something, he'll tell me. He don't have to go to somebody else. That's just somebody pretending to be more spiritual than me so they can come to me and they can lord over me, you know, that God told me, you know. It's kind of like people that gossip. Well, you know, so-and-so told me, you know, and so now you've got all the scoop on it, and nobody else does but you, and so it makes you feel like you're up here and everybody else is down there. And that's along the same lines as that kind of stuff. Anyhow, those things are Old Testament. God did at one time work in dreams and visions and things like that, but He doesn't do that today. His Word is complete. There is no new revelation outside of the Word of God. There isn't. And so anything that God wants to tell me, why he's gonna tell me in his word. All right, Matthew chapter number 10, and we're gonna pick it up in verse number one. It's very familiar passage, but I want you to see something out of it. I've pointed it out before, but I think it bears repeating here again tonight. In Matthew chapter 10, verse number one, the Bible said, and when he had called unto him his 12 disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits to cast them out and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. Now the names of the 12 apostles are these. The first, Simon, who was called Peter and Andrew his brother, James, the son of Zebedee and John his brother, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the publican, James, the son of Alphaeus and Labius, whose surname was Thaddeus, Simon the Canaanite and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. These 12, Jesus sent forth and commanded who? Them. See that? Not everybody, them. That's important to point out at this point, at this juncture. He says, these 12 Jesus sent forth, who are them? They are Jews, right? Okay, let's keep that in context. These 12 Jesus sent forth and commanded them saying, go not into the way of the Gentiles and into any city of the Samaritans, enter ye not. but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." So he calls the twelve unto him and he tells them, he says, I'm going to send you out and when you go, I don't want you to go to the Gentiles, I want you to go to the Jews. Does everybody see that? It's pretty clear, isn't it? At this point in the scriptures, historically, as you're reading from Matthew chapter one, two, three, four, and you get to chapter 10, the Lord calls the 12 unto him, and you go on to verse 11, or chapter 11, 12, and the disciples go, and they're gone, right? And who do they go to? They don't go to the Gentiles, they go to the Jews. So what he's about to tell them is Jewish doctrine, is what it is in essence. Look with me in verse seven. He says, and as ye go, preach, saying, the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Now remember, we don't have time to talk about that much tonight, but there's a difference between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of heaven. The kingdom of heaven is that physical earthly kingdom that Jesus Christ is gonna establish on this earth when he comes back after the second advent. In Matthew chapter eight and verse 11, Jesus said, and I say unto you that many shall come from the east and west and shall sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, where? in the kingdom of heaven. So the kingdom of heaven, they're gonna sit down in it. The kingdom, why? Because the kingdom of heaven is a physical place. But the kingdom of God is not physical. Remember over in John chapter four when Jesus, he was talking, or John three, he was talking to Nicodemus. And you'll remember when he was talking to Nicodemus, he told Nicodemus, you must be born again or you cannot see or enter the kingdom of God. And then he talks about the wind bloweth where it listeth. And he compares that to the Spirit, why? Because the kingdom of God is spiritual. You can't see it. And he says that, and I'm gonna try to find the verse for you here. I think it's in Luke. Yeah, well, I thought it was anyway. But he tells us, I'll have to look it up later on if you want the reference. But he says that the kingdom of God cometh not with observation. So the kingdom of God doesn't come with observation. Why? You can't see it, it's spiritual. You have to be a spirit in order to see spiritual things. You can't see that right now. It's in Luke chapter 17 and verse number 20. And when he was demanded of the Pharisees when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, the kingdom of God cometh not with observation. So in Luke 17, he says you can't see the kingdom of God, but over in Matthew chapter number eight, he says that you'll be able to sit down in the kingdom of God. So which is it? Well, you rightly divided and one is physical and the other is spiritual. So the kingdom of heaven is physical. The kingdom of God is spiritual. That's what you and I were placed into when we got born again, right? 1 Corinthians 12, verse 12 and 13. For by one spirit are we all baptized into one body. Well, you wasn't physically baptized into that one body. When you got saved, you were spiritually baptized into that body. You didn't see it, you didn't feel it, you didn't hear it. Well, how do you know it happened? Well, it just happened because the Word of God says it happened. It's spiritual. But now when it comes to the kingdom of heaven, you're gonna see that, you're gonna see that, but it's not right now, that's still future. All right, so then we come back to Matthew chapter number 10. And we notice that he says in verse seven, and as you go preach saying the kingdom of heaven is at hand, we don't preach the kingdom of heaven. We preach about the kingdom of God. More specifically, we preach the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. You don't find where he told him to go and preach the death, burial and resurrection. It's not there in chapter 10. Jesus Christ hadn't died yet. How can you preach a gospel that ain't even happened yet? So it's not the same. So here you've got the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Look at verse eight. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils, and freely ye have received freely. Notice that those gifts in verse number eight, you know, they can heal the sick and the lepers and raise the dead and cast out devils and all those types of things. And all the sign gifts in Mark 16, I think in verse number 16, it mentions it in 17, all those things, they're connected with the preaching of the kingdom of heaven. Do you see that? Right there in the passage. He gives those things in verse eight on the precipice of verse seven, that when they go, they're to preach the kingdom of heaven. And when they do that, then they're gonna be able to heal and cast out devils and raise the dead. All that goes along with the preaching of the kingdom of heaven. Again, we're not preaching the kingdom of heaven. We're not trying to make this world a better place. That's not what we're trying to do. We're trying to win people to Jesus Christ and get them into the kingdom of God so that they can go to heaven when they die. The Lord, when he comes back, he's gonna remake this thing. We're not trying to make this world a better place. That's a post-millennial view is what that is. That's some of your views like some Southern Baptists believe that way. Some Church of Christ believe that way, and then Catholics believe that way. Actually, the Catholics believe it even more in depth that it's through their mother church that it's gonna make this world such a better place that Jesus Christ is gonna come back and sit on the throne once the church makes this world a better place. We're not trying to make this world a better place. We're saying bye-bye one day. We're going out of here is what's going. So, you know, we better not, you know, anchor ourselves down here. You know, you pray for peace and things like that because, you know, you want your children to be in peace in a world and you want you and I to be in a world with peace, but probably not gonna happen fully until Jesus Christ comes back, who is the King of peace. And so, you know, it's gonna get worse. I mean, if the Bible's right, then it's gotta get worse. I mean, Paul talked about perilous times shall come. They're here. We're in that time, but the good news is, is that when perilous times come, that's the last days of the church, and so we're getting close to going out of here. So there's some encouragement through all of what you see on the news, and maybe some things that you don't see actually that are going on that probably should be on the news, but is not. And so we see that the healing the sick, and the cleansing the lepers, and the raising of the dead, and the casting out the devils, is connected to the message of the preaching of the kingdom of heaven, which, who are they to preach it to? Not to Gentiles, but to Jews. See that? So this healing, the sick and all those things is connected to the Jews. Now that's what we've been saying all along. I mean, you can see it laid out there just as plain as day that when those things show up right there in the book of Matthew that Jesus gives those gifts to them, he says, don't take it to the Gentiles, take it to the Jews. Isn't that something? So when they go and they preach the kingdom of heaven, they're preaching it to Gentiles. And when they go and they heal the sick and cleanse the lepers and they raise the dead, they're not healing and raising dead Gentiles, they're raising dead Jews. You see it right there in the passage. It's a Jewish message and they're to take it to the Jews. It's Jewish disciples taking a Jewish message to the Jews, to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Now we've talked about this healing. We talked about it a little bit there in Mark chapter number 16, and how if you have one of the gifts, then you have them all. So they've got all these gifts. It's not just that they have one, you can't cherry pick which one you want. And of course, I've thought about this message and this lesson as we went forward and stuff that I didn't wanna do this to try to be derogatory to people who believe it, to a certain extent. We can cut up a little bit and that kind of thing, but this is serious. I mean, because either you believe the Bible rightly divided or you don't. And so you've got to understand that healing is not... There's no healers today. There's no man that can lay his hand on you and heal you today. That's Jesus Christ, but he's not here now. These apostles, they had the gift, but that gift died out. We showed that already, that those gifts died out. Paul couldn't even heal a sick cat if he wanted to at one point in his ministry. And the reason why is because he lost the gift of healing. All right, then we talked about signs. Now, we talked about signs and how the signs, they go back to Exodus chapter number four, and that's where it started out. And when God told Moses to put his hand in his bosom and he pulled it out, and it was leprous. And then he told him to put his hand back into his bosom and he pulled it out and it was clean again. It was healed. See that healing, those signs, they all started out with the Jew, with the Hebrews first is where they started. And then we moseyed on over and we talked about tongues. And I think that's where we kind of left off the last time with tongues. We transitioned to the subject of speaking in tongues. And I showed you how that tongues are a sign to the unbelieving Jew. That's 1 Corinthians 1 and verse 22, and 1 Corinthians 14 and verse 22. He said the Jews require a sign. All right, then he says in 1 Corinthians 14, 22, he says that tongues are for a sign to them that believe, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not. So tongues is a sign, it's a sign gift to the unbelieving Jew. It's not for us. It's not for us. Then I showed you where tongues is to confirm the Word. The Word of God hadn't been complete at one point. The Word of God's complete now, but it wasn't complete at one point. So the signs were to confirm the words that the apostles were saying were the true words of God. So when that Jew looked at the words of an apostle, they said, oh, that's of God, because it's followed by signs. And so that's what those things are for. So here tonight, what we're gonna do is I wanna show you the places in the Bible where someone actually, or people actually speak in tongues. Now, if you will come to Acts chapter number two. Acts chapter number two, we'll look at the first one. And I'll go ahead and say this, I've said it many times before. Speaking in tongues only happens three times. There's only three examples of someone or people speaking in tongues in the Bible, only three. So it doesn't happen as much as the charismatics would like to make you think that it does. It goes on in some churches every service. But in the Bible, it just happens three times. I mean, for something to be such a big deal, you think you'd be in there more than three times. But nonetheless, in Acts chapter number two, you should be there now, Acts chapter two, verse number one, the Bible said, and when the day of Pentecost was fully come, so you've got Penta, that means 50, that's connected with 50, so 50 days after Jesus Christ. So you got the day of Pentecost, 50 days later, was fully come. They were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And if you've ever heard some Charismatics talk and stuff like that, they talk about the Holy Ghost as a rushing mighty wind, as a rushing mighty wind, as a rushing mighty wind, and they talk that way. All right, then verse three says, and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. So here they are, and these cloven tongues appeared. Cloven, what is a cloven? Cloven is split. That's what it is, it's split. So it's kind of like a serpent's tongue, if you will. It's a split tongue, and I don't know if it hovered above them or, it says it sat upon each of them, so this tongue sat. I can't figure that one out completely, but it says, and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as a fire. So they talk about send the fire down, send the fire down, send the fire down. You don't want the fire to come down. I assure you the fire that they're referring to, they're taking it out of context, and that fire is something totally different than the fire of the Holy Ghost. There's no fire of the Holy Ghost at all. Notice what he says in verse three, and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire. See that? It's like as. Remember those two small words, the words like and as. It wasn't fire, but it was like as of fire. There's a difference there. So you've got these tongues that came down, and they sat upon them, and they were cloven tongues like as of fire. So they were like fire, okay? All right, I just wanted to make sure I put some emphasis on some of these things as we go through it. Verse four says, now I'll tell you what that cloven tongue means here in just a moment. Verse four says, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. So you'll notice here in verse number four that when these cloven tongues sat upon them, they were filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. So now this is where the heavenly gibberish thing comes in, where, you know, whatever you wanna, you know, should I tie my bow tie, tie my conda, conda, honda, whatever, you know, that kind of thing. And that's what they say this is referring to, but that's not what it's referring to. And I'll show you that here in the passage in just a second, but see, this is where they get the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost from. This is one of the places, the proof texts that they'll use. And they'll say, you see there, when you get filled with the Holy Ghost, then you're gonna speak in tongues. So you may be lost and you come down to the altar and you get saved, but that doesn't mean that you got the Holy Ghost yet. You see, you may get the Holy Ghost one or two weeks later. You ain't gonna get it right then and there necessarily. You might get it a week or two later, and then all of a sudden in a church service, you're gonna stand up and start speaking in tongues, supposedly tongues, and then they're gonna say, oh, he's got the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost. You see, that's how they do that, and they use this as their proof text. But I'm gonna show you these tongues is not what they say it is. All right, look at verse number five. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem, who? Jews, all right, now remember, let's keep it in context. We're talking about Jews, right? Devout men out of every nation under heaven. Now, when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together and were confounded. Why? Because that every man heard them speak in his own language. So the tongues in Acts 2 is not, it's not that at all, it's actually languages. We could say it's actually German, Portuguese, English. I was gonna say Mexican, that's not a language. Spanish, that's a language. Mexican's not a Spanish. It's all these different. Languages that are coming together. And what it is, is that when one of them speaks in their native language, the person hearing it, hears it in their native language. It's kind of like a guy comes in, he sits down and he speaks German, but everybody in here can understand it in English. God kind of lift that barrier. Let me show you that. I think that's important to show you. Come back to Genesis chapter number 11. Genesis chapter number 11. These things are rooted and founded in the scriptures. You just gotta dig and study a little bit, and they're right there. In Genesis chapter number 11, I'll give you a second to turn there. In Genesis chapter number 11, verse number one. Genesis 11, one. The Bible says, and the whole earth was of one language and of one speech. See that? At one time, the entire globe spoke the same language. So when one person spoke, the other person understood because they all speak the same language. And then he says in verse number two, and it came to pass as they journeyed from the east that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and they dwelt there. Remember the land of Shinar, when we went through the book of Revelation, we taught you that the land of Shinar, where's that at? That's in Babylon, isn't it? That's in chapter 10, verse 10. And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Eric and Achad and Calnea in the land of Shinar. And so in the land of Shinar, it's in Babel, it's in Babylon. All right, so now verse three, chapter 11, verse three. And they said one to another, go to, let us make brick and burn them throughly. and they had brick for stone and slime had they for mortar. And they said, go to, let us build us a city and a tower whose top may reach unto heaven and let us make us a name, watch this now, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. Those folks knew that God wanted them to scatter on the face of the earth. But they didn't wanna do it. So what'd they do? They said, we're gonna build us a tower here in the land of Shinar in Babylon. We're gonna build it up to heaven. And that way we're gonna make us a way to heaven there and we don't need God. So what they're trying to do is go around God is what they're trying to do. And so they didn't wanna be scattered. So there was a problem. God wants them to scatter. They don't wanna scatter. So guess who's gonna win at the end of the day? God's gonna win. Look at verse five. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the children of men builded. And the Lord said, behold, the people is one and they all have one language. And this they begin to do. And now nothing will be restrained from them which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down. Now that's God speaking in verse number seven. And he said, go to, let us go down. Wonder who the us is. Reckon it could be God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost? It might be. He said, go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth, and they left off to build a city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel. The Lord did there confound the language of all the earth and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. And so that's how it got its name is Babel. After God had confounded their language, one guy looked at another guy and he was just a bunch of Babel to him, right? Y'all seen that thing advertised, I think, on TV. It's the app you can get on your phone. It's called Babble. Isn't it strange? I mean, they even know the Bible as well when it comes to this stuff. And so, you know, it's called Babble. What does it do? What's this app supposedly do? It teaches you how to speak another language. And so it's interesting how they get all that stuff and it's just amazing. But anyway, the Lord, what did he do? Well, he confounded their language so they had to scatter. So then you've got the Asians and Shem, they go to the Middle East over there and then you've got Japheth, and they go to the European continent, and then you've got Ham, which is an African, and he goes to the African continent. And so they separated. God separated them by their languages. Now, they had no choice but to separate, because they couldn't understand one another, right? So this is where it all started. See, the whole earth was of one language, and now, because of their disobedience, and they wouldn't scatter, God confounded their language, and now we've got hundreds and hundreds of languages today, right? Now, come back to Acts chapter number two, And look at verse number six. Let's read it again so that now you can kind of see and understand what the Lord's getting at here. Now, when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together and were confounded. Why was the multitude confounded? Because that every man heard them speak in his own language. So when one guy spoke in one language, another guy in another language heard it. We can continue on, look at verse seven. And they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? And how here we ever met in our own tongue wherein we were born? the Parthians, the Medes, the Amalites, and the dwellers of Mesopotamia, and Judea, and Cappadocia, and Pontius, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, and Egypt, and parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews, and proselytes, and Cretes, and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. And they were all amazed and were in doubt, saying one to another, what meaneth this? and others mocking said, these men are full of new wine. Well, I'll stop right there, but I think you get the point. The tongues in Acts chapter number two is not some heavenly gibberish, it's languages. See how some like to make you think it's something different than what it is, but all you have to do is read the context. Now, tongues are a sign for who? The Jew, right? Unbelieving Jew. Well, verse number seven clears this up for us. It says, and they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? And how here we ever met our own tongue wherein we were born? And then you got in verse number 10, you find Jews and proselytes at the end of the verse. See, there's Jews and in that passage there, well, there's tongues in the passage. So they go together. God's trying to show that Jew something is what he's trying to do. He's trying to make a believer out of the unbelieving Jew. Now let's look at another one here. If you'll come over to Acts chapter number 10, Acts chapter number 10. Let's look at the second occasion here. Now remember, in Acts 2, it's languages, right? All right, Acts chapter number 10. Acts chapter 10. I'm just gonna skip down through the chapter for sake of time. Acts chapter 10, verse number one. There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian Band, and a devout man and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms of the people and prayed to God all way. He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day, that's about 3 p.m., an angel of God coming into him and saying unto him, Cornelius. And when he looked on him, he was afraid and said, what is it, Lord? And he said unto him, thy prayers and thy alms are come, alms is just a gift, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. And now send men to Joppa and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter. He lodges with one Simon a Tanner, whose house is by the seaside. He shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do. Jump down to verse number 24, verse number 24. And the morrow, after they entered in Caesarea, and Cornelius waited for them, and he had called together his kinsmen and near friends. And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up, I myself also am a man. And as he talked with him, he went in and found many that were come together. And he said unto them, ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company or come unto one of another nation. But God hath showed me that I should not call any man common or unclean. Now I skipped over that part for sake of time, but starting in verse number nine, you'll remember there was three sheets and there was animals. with those sheets. And what God was trying to show Peter, see, Peter's a Jew. And the mentality of the Jew is, is that the Gentiles are unclean. They're dogs, Gentile dogs, they're unclean. They're not worthy to even be talking to. And that's why they even went around Samaria. They didn't go through Samaria, because Samaritans were half-breeds. They were half-Jews and half-Gentiles, and they didn't want any dealings with them, so they went around them. All right, so here you've got Peter. He's a Jew, and he thinks these Gentiles are unclean. And so God is trying to show Peter now, through these sheets, he's trying to show him not to call unclean what God calls clean. So now he's showing him that the Gentiles, if God has saved a Gentile and God has cleaned a Gentile up, then don't call a Gentile unclean, because if God cleaned him up, he's clean. I believe that's correct. All right, now jump down to verse number, oh, verse number 44. Verse number 44, we'll just jump down there. The Bible said, while Peter yet spake these words. Now Peter's up preaching to Gentiles now in verse 44. He's up preaching. Now in Acts 2, he was preaching to Jews. In Acts 2, he was talking to Jews. Here in Acts 10, he's talking to Gentiles. Verse 44, while Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. See that? There's no, remember Acts 2.38? You got to repent and be baptized everyone in the name of Jesus Christ for the mission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Here in Acts 10, these Gentiles did not receive the Holy Ghost the same way the Jews did in Acts 2. The Jews in Acts 2 got it by water baptism. These Gentiles in Acts 10, they got it by hearing the Word. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. That's how you get saved now. You don't get saved by being dunked in water, you get saved by hearing the word. Verse 45, and they of the circumcision which believed. Now who's the circumcision? That's Jews, all right? And they of the circumcision which believe were astonished as many came with Peter. Why? Because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. Now you can see why God was showing Peter not to call unclean what God has called clean. Because God's getting ready to clean up some Gentile dogs now and now they're clean. They're no longer unclean. So they were astonished. You see, what happened is these Jews were astonished. Now, let me get ahead of myself here. And so he says that because on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. Now, notice they hadn't been baptized yet, but they got the gift of the Holy Ghost. Now that's not the same as Acts 2.38. Acts 2.38, there was Jews that were baptized for the remission of their sins and to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. But here these Gentiles, they heard the word and the Holy Ghost came on them. It was poured out, the gift of the Holy Ghost according to verse 45. Now look at verse 46. For they heard them, they would be Jews, for they, the Jews, heard them, Gentiles, speak with tongues and magnify God. Then answered Peter, can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? and he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord, then prayed they him to tarry certain days. So these Gentiles, Peter was up preaching, they heard the word of God, and then the Holy Ghost came upon them. They got saved. You got the Holy Ghost, you're saved, right? Spirit of God enters you, you are saved. And so they were saved, and when they were saved, they began to speak in tongues. The Bible said in verse 46, they heard him speak with tongues. But guess what? There's some astonished Jews in the passage, isn't there? So God allowed these Gentiles to speak with tongues in order to prove to the Jews that the Gentiles received the Holy Ghost as well as the Jews did. Does that make sense? It's right there in the passage. I mean, to me, it doesn't get a whole lot plainer than that, but of course, I've been studying this stuff for years now, so it's pretty easy for me to pick it out, but it's right there in the passage if you'll go home and study that thing. So that's the second example of where they spoke in tongues. You've got Acts chapter two, and then you've got Acts chapter number 10. And now let's jump down to Acts chapter 19. Jump over to Acts 19, and I'll show you the third example. Acts chapter 19. Now this one gets a little more complicated. This one here is the one that I, I don't know all the Bible. I really don't. I don't profess to know it all. I don't profess to understand it all. I'm trying to understand what God shows me. I'm gonna give you what God has shown me, and you can go from there, okay? But watch this, Acts 19, verse number one. The Bible says, and it came to pass that while Apollos was a Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus and finding certain disciples. Now these disciples are Jewish disciples and you'll see that in a minute because of by who they were baptized by. Verse two says, he said unto them, have ye, so Paul's talking to him, he said, have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, we have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. Now, these are believers. These are believers, and they haven't received the Holy Ghost yet. Now, that's the strange part about this. I can't figure all this out. I mean, in Acts chapter 10, they heard the word, and they received the gift of the Holy Ghost. In Acts 2, they repented. It doesn't say that they believed in Acts 2. It says they repented, and that they were, but you can assume they believed, but it doesn't say believe. You're adding to the Word of God when you do that. It says that they were to repent, and then they were to be baptized in order to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. But here in Acts chapter 19, these disciples, they believed, because he says, have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed? And they said, we have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. So they were believers, but they haven't received the Holy Ghost yet. So see, there's some strange stuff. That's why you gotta be careful when it comes to the book of Acts. Be careful about taking church doctrine out of the book of Acts. Be careful about taking church doctrine out of the book of Matthew, out of the book of Acts, out of the book of Hebrews, and out of the book of James. You'll get mixed up if you start trying to apply some of that stuff to the body of Christ today. And so here in Acts 19, the reason why I say that is because these are transitional books. The book of Acts is going from the kingdom of heaven to the kingdom of God. It's going from God dealing primarily with the Jews to dealing primarily with the Gentiles. The church, the body of Christ is a Gentile body. Though Jews can be saved and be a part of it, it's a Gentile body. And so he's going from law to grace when it comes to the book of Acts. It's a transitional book. It's a bridge to cross from one side to the other to get us to where we're at today. That's what the book of Acts is. Now he says in verse number three, He said unto them, unto what then were ye baptized? And they said unto John's baptism. So Paul said, well, who baptized you? Ain't that a strange question to ask somebody that's believed but hasn't heard of the Holy Ghost? Why would you ask that? Well, we did a study here a while back on baptisms in the Bible. And you'll remember we talked about John's baptism and we talked about Peter's baptism. John's baptism was a baptism of remittance of sin. Peter's baptism was a baptism of remission of sin, but on top of it, it gave the gift of the Holy Ghost. And so what Paul is trying to discern between these disciples is they say they believe, but they haven't heard of the Holy Ghost. He's looking at him and he's saying, well, these are Jewish disciples, because if you've been baptized by John, then you're a Jew. He baptized Jews in the River Jordan. And so these Jewish disciples didn't know there'd be a Holy Ghost. But Paul thought, you know what? I need to find out what formula to use. So I need to find out what baptism they were baptized by, and that'll give him some insight on what he needs to do with these folks. Now watch this in verse number four. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance. See that? saying unto the people that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is on Christ Jesus. And when they heard this, when the disciples, those 12 disciples that Paul's talking to, when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Ghost came on them and they spake with tongues and prophesied. Do you see that? In Acts chapter number two, there was a group that got the gift of the Holy Ghost by being baptized in water. In Acts chapter number 10, there was Gentiles that received the Holy Ghost by hearing the word. But here in Acts 19, this group, about 12 of them, according to verse number seven, 12 men, they received the gift of the Holy Ghost when Paul laid his hands on them. Now you try to figure that thing out, that's why in the book of Acts you gotta be careful. But you know what people will do? This is what people have done for years. They'll take them and jam them together. Well, if you want the Holy Ghost, then guess what you're gonna have to do? You're gonna have to hear the word, you're gonna have to be baptized, and you're gonna have to have the laying on of hands. See that? They jam it together and create a whole new doctrine that the Bible never taught for you and me. You can't do that. Also, you're gonna find that Acts 2 and Acts 19, there's about, oh, there's about 15, 10, 15 years between the two. So it's different. But you notice again, they spoke in tongues. You've got Jews here in the passage. You see, you can't get around that thing. There's a Jew every time in the passage when somebody speaks in tongues. Now, why is that? Because the Bible says that the Jews require a sign. Tongues are a sign for them, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not. And so that's what he's talking about there. Now, if you will, come over to 1 Corinthians 14. This is probably where I'm gonna park and I'm gonna close out. 1 Corinthians 14. Now, while you're turning to 1 Corinthians 14, I do wanna point out that the book of 1 Corinthians was written during the historical time period of the book of Acts. So 1 Corinthians was probably written sometime, let me see if I can, let's see here. Schofield says his relation to the church at Corinth is set forth in Acts 18, verses one through 18. So it's sometime around Acts 18, 19, somewhere through there, evidently, that the 1 Corinthians was written. So during the book of Acts, the book of 1 Corinthians was written. Now, you say, well, tongues are for today because it's in the book of 1 Corinthians. Paul talks about it. He takes nearly an entire chapter and he talks about that. So why shouldn't we be speaking in tongues today? Well, it was written during that transition period. So you have to be careful about taking doctrine out of the transition period. Tongues is a part of that. Tongues was in effect at the time Paul wrote 1 Corinthians. So Paul gives some rules concerning tongues. But I'm gonna show you again in the passage there that it may not be what they like to say that it's cracked up to be. And I'll show you that in just a moment. But here in 1 Corinthians in verse number 14, no, I'm sorry, 14 verse number 40. He says, let all things be done decently and in order. So the context of this thing is tongues, and so tongues is to be done decently and in order, but he said let all things. So when it comes to the church, all things have an order. It's to be done decently and in order. So tongues have an order, right? And so that's what I wanna give you here in just a minute. I don't know if you've ever been in a charismatic church during a service when it kinda, if you will, if I can put it this way, it all breaks out, you know. I don't know if you've ever been in something like that before, but I have. I've been in that before, and I saw, looking back on it, I realize how out of order that it was. Once I look at what the Bible has to say versus what I saw, it was out of order, and I'll show you that here in just a moment. But Paul has been correcting these Corinthians according to verse number 37. He said, if any man think himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are commandments of the Lord. So Paul is commanding them, he's correcting them because they've got some things wrong. And so he's trying to help them out. If you'll look in verse number two, notice he says, for he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God. For no man understandeth him, how be it in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries. So they say when they speak in tongues, it's by the Holy Spirit that they speak these mysteries. But is that what verse two said? No, it's not what verse two said. It says at the end of it, how be it in the Spirit, notice it's capital S. or excuse me, lowercase s. It's a lowercase s. So in the spirit, lowercase s, he speaketh mysteries. It's by his own spirit that he's speaking these things. It's not by the spirit of God. If you'll look with me again, you can drop down to verse number 16. It says, else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, See, that's lowercase s. How shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? So it's lowercase s. So it's by his spirit, not by God's spirit, that they're doing these things. I'll show you an example. If you'll come back one chapter, I'm trying to hurry, I promise. First Corinthians, I wanna finish tonight. First Corinthians 12, and look at verse 13. For by one spirit, See the capital S? That's the Holy Spirit right there. You see, in the Bible, God makes a distinguishment between his spirit and man's spirit, or some other spirit for that matter, but he capitalizes the word spirit there. And what a blessing that that is to be able to see that, but that way it clues you in a little bit. So when you come to chapter 14 and verse number two, and how be it in the spirit he speaketh mysteries, he's speaking those things by his own spirit and not by the spirit of God. You'll notice again in verse number 32, the Bible said in the spirits, lowercase s, of the prophets are subject to the prophets. So you can see that right there, just in black and white. Now, we're not to covet tongues. We're to covet the best gifts, 1 Corinthians 12, verse number 31, and tongues, I guess you could say, would be the least gift. But you know, if I can't understand, or nobody can understand what you're saying, then, you know, according to verse nine, you're just speaking as one speaks into the air. Verse number nine says, so likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? For ye shall speak into the air. So when you speak that way, you just, I mean, nobody understands you. It's like you're just speaking into the air. You're not making any sense. You're not gaining any traction. It's not going anywhere. It's not doing anybody any good. Now the context of verse nine is found in verse 10. He says in verse 10, there are, it may be so many kinds of voices in the world. You know what that is, don't you? It's languages. Voices in the world, that's languages. So he's telling you the context of verse nine when they talk about tongues there, he's talking about languages. Now, let me see here. Let me go ahead and give you the rules and we'll close out. Let me go ahead and give you the rules on tongues. First of all, number one, two or three at the most are to speak in tongues. Two or three at the most are to speak in tongues. Look with me if you will. These are all in chapter 14. These are the rules on tongues according to 1 Corinthians 14. And look at verse number 27. He said, if any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two or at the most by three. Now, my experience of being in a charismatic church where they speak in tongues, it's not limited to just two or three. Many times you'll have several that'll speak in tongues. And so here in the Bible, Paul's laying out these rules and he's saying, let it be two, but no more than three. So that's the first rule. Number two, second rule, it's to be done one at a time. In other words, by course, one at a time. Look at verse 27 again. If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two or at the most by three, and that by course. So it's to be done one at a time. So if you've got three men that wanna speak in tongues in the church, then you let the first one speak. Once he's done, then you can let the second one speak. And if the third one, if you allow him to speak, then he speaks after the second one. They don't do it at the same time. Again, they violate the rules. Charismatics violate these rules and they'll do them at the same time. But it's not to be done at the same time. It's to be done by course. Number three, we notice in verse 27 that there's only one is to interpret. Only one is to interpret. He says, if any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two or at the most by three, and that by course, and let one interpret. Let one interpret. So only one is to interpret. All right, then number four, the fourth rule is, I believe this is four, isn't it? Yeah. If there's no interpreter, then there's to be no speaking in tongues, if there's no interpreter. Look at verse 28. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God. So we notice in verse 28 that if there is no interpreter, keep silent. But you know what? Growing up, I've been in charismatic churches, and I have heard them, and when they'll speak in tongues, you can't find an interpreter. Now, there's something wrong with it. You say, well, there's an interpreter there somewhere. Uh-uh, uh-uh, it don't work that way. When somebody speaks in tongues, according to this passage, the rule is that you've got one interpreter with one guy that's speaking in tongues so that everybody is edified, so that everybody could understand. Because if you can't, then you're speaking to the air, right? Okay, but hang on just a second. We're going somewhere with this. We're chka-chka-chka-chka-chka-chka-chka. All right, so if there is no interpreter, then no one speaks in tongues. All right, then number five, when speaking in tongues, you have complete control. You don't go out of your mind and la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la They'll say, you're speaking against the Holy Spirit. Listen, blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is not speaking against the Spirit, it's speaking against Jesus Christ and the works that he did while he was on the earth. You can't commit blasphemy of the Holy Ghost today. And so they get that one wrong. The reason why they do that is to shut you up so you don't talk about what they're doing, is what it is. And so, you know, I just don't go along with it anymore. I just, you know what, I'm just gonna give you the truth and I don't know, maybe you've got family that's mixed up in it, I've got family that's mixed up in it, but what are you gonna do? I'm still gonna believe the Bible regardless of what my family believes. The family's not my final authority, the word of God is. I'm gonna take the Bible over family, friends, coworkers, enemies, anybody else, I'm gonna take the Bible over them every single time. So when speaking in tongues, you have complete control. There's no such thing as God taking over your body and you don't know what you've done. There's no such thing as that at all. I mean, according to verse number 33, he says, for God is not the author of confusion, and all that stuff is is confusion. When they're laying out on the floor, and they're flopping back and forth, and you got people that are over here speaking in tongues and all that, that's all confusing. If you're a unbeliever, you come in, you sit down, you're thinking, man, these people are crazy. And rightfully so, rightfully so. You won't be confused. The Holy Spirit will never confuse you. You won't be confused. And some would have you to believe it's like some acid high or something like that where you don't have control over your body. You just sit there and you just shake in the floor and all that stuff. And they attribute that stuff to God. Now some of you might be mad as a hornet at me right now. I'm not trying to make you mad at me. I'm trying to show you the scriptures and the silliness that goes along with it when you write the Divide Your Bible. When you go through these things, you start seeing it. Some of that stuff sounds like to me that it would be demonic. If you saw somebody out on the street and they were out there on the sidewalk and they were doing that, wouldn't you think that they're on drugs? You really would. So what would be the difference in coming to church and seeing that? The only difference is the low, oh, we can attribute it to God because it's in the house of God. Don't you think the devil can walk in a church too? He sure can, he sure can. And so anyway, when speaking in tongues, you have complete control. You don't go out of your mind. If something takes over your body and you have no control over it, it's not God. It's not God. It might be something, but it's not. You say, well, I know my experience. I'm not gonna take your experience over the word of God. I'm gonna take the word of God. I know how I felt. I seen it with my own eyes. I could care less. I could care less. Had an uncle one time, he'd always say, believe half of what you see, or you see, believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see. And there's some truth into that for sure. All right, let me give you this last one, number six. Now, I'm not trying to make you ladies mad. I'm gonna show you in the text, okay? It's right there in black and white. You'll have to take it to God, okay? I'm just gonna give it to you. A woman is never to speak in tongues in the church. She's never to speak in tongues in the church. Look at verse 34. Let your women keep silence in the churches, for it is not permitted unto them to speak, but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. So he said to let the women keep in silence in the churches. It's not talking about if a woman wants to sing in the choir. It's not talking about if a woman wants to testify. It's not talking about if a woman wants to speak in a business meeting. The context of 1 Corinthians 14 is speaking in tongues. Tongues are only to be spoken by men. That's the rule. I didn't make it up. That's the rule. If you'll look with me in verse 28, he says, but if there be no interpreter, let who? Let him, that's a male, isn't it? Let him keep silence in the church and let who? Him speak to himself and to God. It's very clear in the passage that women don't speak in tongues in the church, that it's done by men. Look at verse 27. If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be done by two or at the most by three. See that? It's done by men. I mean, I could give you another example, verse number 30. Look at verse 30. If anything be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. It's always done by man. Now let me ask you a question. I've been in enough charismatic churches when that goes on that I know that speaking in tongues is done mostly by the women and not men. That's unscriptural. It's unscriptural. Now let me go back to my whole original point here. And the whole original point here was that tongues is a language. I've showed you that from the scriptures. It's God dropping the language barrier so that when one person speaks, they all hear. So here in 1 Corinthians 14, when they speak in tongues, it's only been done by two or at the most by three. What is it? Well, if a fella comes in, doesn't speak English and he speaks German and he wants to testify, there needs to be an interpreter to interpret it in English so everybody can understand it. That's speaking in tongues today. That's what that is. It's a language. So if somebody comes in, they speak Spanish, then we've gotta have somebody that knows how to interpret Spanish into English. You can do that two or three times. And it's only the men that can do that. See how that is? It's laid out right there in the Bible. All six of those rules there when speaking in tongues. So from what little experience that I have with being around those that believe in tongues and speak in tongues, it's mostly done by women. And that's a violation of the scriptures is what that is. Isn't that something? All right, I think we're done. All right, we'll stop right there.
