Okay, if you will take with me in your Bibles to the book of James. James chapter 4 and verse 17. A verse we know very well. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. Y aquel al que sabe hacerlo bueno y no lo hace, les pecados preoramos. Father, I pray that in your mercy and grace as we approach this text, you would work on us and through us in your spirit that we would learn and grow and take this truth and apply it to our hearts so we would learn our need to grow in doctrine and practice and that we would have a healthy balance here of those two. Got to do pray this evening for those who are not here because they're sick and just pray that you would Let them feel better quickly, and that you would even this evening, maybe through video or whatever, use this text to work on their hearts. You would grow our church, Father, that you would cause us to have a desire and a passion to learn truth, but not only to learn it, but that we would walk in it, and that it would be part of our everyday lives. For him it is sin. Now there is a problem in our text. We will get to it. Is it only sin when we sin against knowledge? If I remain in ignorance, do I escape sin? But the real question that we need to deal with in the text, the gran pregunta que debemos tratar en el texto is, what is the end of the life in Christ? ¿Cuál es el fin de la vida en Cristo? The reason that God has saved us, the reason that God has saved us, is that we would be holy. That we would be set apart. And that we would, in being holy, give Him glory. So, the whole idea of separating us from the world and making us saints. is that we would be holy and blameless before Him. Es que seamos santos y sin mancha delante de El. Peter, it says, as they were destined to do. And Peter says, as they were destined to do. So we were a people born in sin. And he chose us in Christ to be different. To be a holy priesthood. In verse 6 of Ephesians 1, He did this for this reason, to the praise of His glory. He chose us in Christ so we'd be holy. So that we would glorify Him. So you know the catechism. What is the chief end of man? To glorify God. So how in the world can we bring God glory? Well, that we would be holy. Holiness brings God glory. If you think about it like this, in 2 Corinthians, which we're reading right now in the Bible reading plan, In Christ, in Cristo, he made him who knew no sin. Lo hizo pecado quien no conoció pecado. That in him we might be the righteousness of God. Que en el seamos la justicia de Dios. That means that the world would look at us and say, God's righteous. So let's look at our text this evening. Miramos nuestro texto esta tarde. It says, so whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, him, for him it is sin. Dice, al que sabe hacerlo bueno y no lo hace, le es pecado. The first thing I want you to note here is the word to know. It is a perfect active participle. So, you know, but you need to note here, the work to know has already been done. El trabajo a conocer, a saber, ya está hecho. So, you've done the work to learn. Has hecho el trabajo a aprender. And in your present state, en tu estado presente, you know. Tu sabes. There's a knowledge that you know. Hay un conocimiento que sabes. You've gained a knowledge. And now you know. This word here means to understand. To be able. Can. And the idea here is that a Christian has an understanding. Tiene un entendimiento. And that understanding they're able to believe, to obey. Ese entendimiento son capaces de obedecer. So first I want to point this. Christianity is about knowing. It's about knowledge. So, many of our day have reduced Christianity. But knowledge is involved in regeneration. So you can't be regenerate unless you know the truths of the gospel. So that's why Paul says if someone preaches the gospel other than what we've preached. Christianity is about knowing. I also want to mention here. How do we know? How do we come to a knowledge? Well, our scriptures, our catechism. The scriptures are our only rule of faith and practice. We know because of the scriptures. We can only know through the scriptures. We can only know what to believe. We can only know how to apply what we believe. Through the scriptures. And so we must know the scriptures. So here in our text, whoever knows the right thing to do. So the one who knows the right or good thing to do. We learn only that from the scriptures. So in this verse we see a connection. We see a connection with doing right. Godliness, right doing. So if we were to define godliness in the most simple form. Doing what the scriptures say. If that was the most simple definition of godliness. Now, I would say this, we could spend years defining godliness. But if we say that the most simple way to define it. Godliness is doing what the scriptures say. It's obeying the heart of God. So if we say right doing comes through knowledge. There is a connection. I know so that I can do. Knowledge is not godliness. We cannot confuse the two. But you cannot be godly and ignorant of the scriptures. James is desiring that these people walk in godliness. The one who knows. El quien sabe. Your right to know. To say we could be godly without the scriptures is like a man telling you how much he loves his wife. And how great she is. And him not knowing anything about her. What's her favorite color? What color eyes does she have? You can't even describe her. The Christian must know. El cristiano debe saber. We must give ourselves to know. The next thing in our text is the right thing, the good thing. La siguiente cosa en nuestro texto es lo bueno. This word means to be attractive, an outward appearance. Handsome things. Beautiful things. What is right and useful and beautiful flow from the scriptures. So from the scriptures we learn. We learn of the beauty of God. We learn of the rightness of God. And we learn the right things that are commanded. This is where our flesh and our spirit fight. This is where Paul wrestles in Romans 7. I know the good. Yo sé el bien. I want to do good. And they want to say, well, Goodness is installed in us upon regeneration. It's in us. It's infused to us. And some make statements like this. If we would just walk in the goodness that's in us, we wouldn't even need the scriptures. If we would just advance ourselves in what was given to us, we wouldn't even need the scriptures. You see the problem? You no longer, when you have that mentality, you're no longer looking for the scriptures to tell you what's good. Emotion. Imagination. And all of a sudden we invent what's good. Paul, to fight against this, Pablo a pelear contra ese, he says, the law is good. La ley es bueno. Why is the law good? Por que la ley es bueno? It tells us the character of God. But are practical atheists. This is a term coined by Stephen Sharnock. It's a term used by Stephen Sharnock. He says, an atheist is someone who claims not to know God. An atheist is someone who claims not to know God. A practical atheist says, well, no, no, I love God. Un ateista practica es uno que dice, yo amo a Dios. But they live like there is no God. Pero viven como no hay Dios. Their lives are like that of an atheist. Sus vidas son uno como un ateista. So it is these men who know the good that they are to do and fail to do it. If I just remain ignorant of the scriptures, am I good? Are we safer not to know what they say? Are we to continue in ignorance that grace may abound? What punishment is there? I can indulge in this sin. I mean, covered by the blood of Jesus. The warning from James here. You know it's wrong. That's a worse sin. It's sin indeed. Remember the passage we looked a few weeks ago in Sunday school. about the Lord's Supper. It says they've eaten unworthily. Some are sick. Others have died. And I made it very clear. I'm not saying every time you get sick it's because you ate the Lord's Supper wrongly. But we shouldn't discredit. But we shouldn't discredit. But we shouldn't discredit. But we shouldn't discredit. He doesn't discipline us physically. He doesn't discipline us spiritually. He doesn't discipline us financially. If you want to make that case, explain the discipline. He uses providence and circumstance to bring us to a right understanding of who he is. He will discipline his children. So know the phrase, it's sin indeed. Conoces la frase, es pecado realmente. It's not enough to read and gain understanding. We must be doers as well. Don't wrongly understand. Knowledge is good. We are to go to the Word of God. We are to consume it. We're to learn the deep doctrines of Christ. We're looking at the great passage in Hebrews 6 right now. In chapter 5 he says, I want to give you solid food. I want you to learn the doctrine of the priesthood of Christ. I want you to learn the deep truths of Christ. Quiero que aprendas las profundas verdades de Cristo. We are to set ourselves in a church. Christ must be the one we pursue. We must make it our one desire, like the psalmist says. One thing I ask, and one thing I seek. That I might dwell in the house of the Lord. And yet they fall prey to their appetites. They do not mortify sin. Our theology must be proper. It should be right. We should strive to have a right understanding of the Bible. We should have a proper theology. But it should also be practical. Some deny God in their minds. And others deny Him with their lives. Some question truth in their minds. And others deny it with their lives. We are prone so quickly to say, I know that. I know that truth, you say, es verdad. As though we can't learn it again. Como si no pudieramos aprenderlo de nuevo. It's not good for grace in my life. And yet we do it. We know it offends God. God, I know this is what you've commanded me not to do. And yet we press on to do it. One of the Puritans. said, and we would understand it well here, no vinegar, so tart, As that which is made from the sweetest wine. So I want you to think about something. When we take the Lord's Supper, we make our own grape juice. And it's sweet. I don't know if you know this or not. In half a cup of that grape juice, the average sugar content is 80 grams. That's sweet. But, it's the sweetest wine that makes the most tart vinegar. Proverbs 28.4 says this. Those who forsake the law, praise the wicked. Los que dejan la ley alaben los impíos. When we don't do it. Proverbs says, when we do what we know the law forbids. We praise the wicked. Think about that. Here's what Psalm 101.3 says, this is okay, Psalm 103.1, 101.3, 101.3. I will set no unjust thing before my eyes. I hate the works of those who do wicked. No pondre algo injusto ante mis ojos. Aborrezco las obras de los que hacen maldad. So you see the difference, lo ves la diferencia. When we give in, To the thing we hate. We hate it because we know it's wrong. When we give in to that, we're praising the wicked. When we do what the law forbids. When we do what we know is wrong. When we don't do what's right. We not only commit the sin, but we approve of it. Here's where our mind and heart goes. I know it's wrong. But for the sake of my own pleasure, I'm going to do it. I know it's wrong. But for the sake of my own preservation, I'm going to do it. That's the sin of it. This is a pecado. There's no greater evil that remains in us than to sin against the knowledge that we've gained from the scriptures.
