Proclaim the gospel to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Shalom and welcome to the Everlasting Nation, a radio ministry of International Board of Jewish Missions. This is Mark Oshman with the International Board of Jewish Missions, bringing you another radio Bible program. We continue with our series about how to rear godly children. One of the most important tasks God lays upon parents involves teaching their children between godly behavior and ungodly behavior, teaching children the difference between these two. Over the course of world history, societies have collapsed because parents failed to instruct their children to recognize such distinctions and to choose behaving in an upright manner. Solomon recognized that an individual's perception of God would determine whether or not such a person would act wisely. According to the second chapter of Proverbs, he told his son that, quote, the Lord giveth wisdom, out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding, unquote. Rejecting God would thereby prove tantamount to rejecting the only legitimate source of wisdom. Furthermore, Solomon added that, quote, he layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous, unquote. God serves as a repository of wisdom for those who seek it from him. As James noted in the first chapter of his epistle, quote, if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him, unquote. Solomon knew this. based upon his own life experiences. According to the first chapter of 2 Chronicles, God invited Solomon to ask for anything he wanted. Here was that king's reply, quote, God graciously granted that request, also bestowing wealth and honor on Solomon in addition to wisdom. Thus, as the author of 1 Kings chapter 4 noted, Solomon's wisdom exceeded the wisdom of all the children of the East Country and all the wisdom of Egypt. Wisdom includes the capacity to discern right from wrong. In Isaiah chapter 5, God pronounced judgment against those who, quote, call evil good and good evil, that put darkness for light and light for darkness. that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." Such people, God continued, such people deem themselves, quote, wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight, unquote. The devil seeks to replace divine wisdom with his own counterfeit substitution, worldly wisdom. James contrasted the two in the third chapter of his epistle. He described the so-called wisdom offered by Satan as being, quote, earthly, sensual, devilish, unquote. Worldly advice seeks to turn an individual away from God. Take, for example, a disastrous counsel given to Solomon's son Rehoboam by his younger advisors. Advice recorded in 2 Chronicles Chapter 10. Look to what Rehoboam said and did, as an example of worldly wisdom, and notice how it failed. James also stated that the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. The application of God's wisdom leads to holy thoughts and a fruitful life. Over the course of his lifetime, Solomon had to discern between doing the right thing and doing the wrong thing. Sometimes he made the latter choices in taking a multiplicity of wives. When Solomon made choices like that, he failed.
