Welcome to this Daily PBJ devotional.
Read Exodus 7, Job 24, and Psalms 24-26. This devotional is about
Psalm 25. To you, O Lord, I lift up my
soul. In you, my God, I trust. Do not let me be put to shame. Do not let my enemies exalt over
me. Surely none who wait for you
will be put to shame, but those who engage in treachery without
cause will be disgraced. Show me your ways, O Lord, teach
me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach
me, for you are the God of my salvation. All day long I wait
for you. Remember, O Lord, your compassion
and loving devotion, for they are from age to age. Remember
not the sins of my youth, nor my rebellious acts. Remember
me according to your loving devotion, because of your goodness, O Lord. Good and upright is the Lord,
therefore he shows sinners the way. He guides the humble in
what is right and teaches them His way. All the Lord's ways
are loving and faithful to those who keep His covenant and His
decrees. For the sake of your name, O
Lord, forgive my iniquity, for it is great. Who is the man who
fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the path
chosen for him. His soul will dwell in prosperity,
and his descendants will inherit the land. The Lord confides in
those who fear him, and reveals his covenant to them. My eyes
are always on the Lord, for he will free my feet from the mash. Turn to me and be gracious, for
I am lonely and afflicted. the troubles of my heart increase. Free me from my distress, consider
my affliction and trouble, and take away all my sins. Consider
my enemies, for they are many, and they hate me with vicious
hatred. Guard my soul and deliver me,
let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. May integrity
and uprightness preserve me, because I wait for you. Redeem
Israel, O God, from all its distress. This is God's Word. Psalm 25
began in verses one through three with David reminding God that
David was trusting in him. David then asked God to make
his trust pay off by not letting David be put to shame. That's
verse 2. But David wanted more than a
tit-for-tat relationship with God. He didn't want to do right
just so he would be well treated by God. Instead, he wanted to
serve God so that he could know God. That is why he prayed in
verse four, show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. This expresses a desire for God
himself to know where God is, if you will, knowing what he
loves and what he hates, how he works and why he does what
he does. Those are God's ways and God's
paths. Where would God do that teaching of his paths? Verse
5 says this, guide me in your truth and teach me for you are
God my Savior. David wanted to know God, to
soak up his truth because my hope is in you all day long as
we saw in verse 5c. It was David's love for God,
his desire to know God and live in close fellowship with God
that motivated his godly life. not his desire to succeed. In
other words, David didn't live a godly life because he wanted
to succeed and hoped that God would bless him. He lived a godly
life so that he could know God and be more like him. David also
didn't hide the fact that he was a fallen person. In verse
7, he pleaded for God to give him full pardon, complete forgiveness
for his sins. He wrote, and these are the words
of the NIV in verse 7, but it says, Do not remember the sins
of my youth and my rebellious ways. According to your love,
remember me, for you, Lord, are good. This, too, is an indication
of a person who is walking with God. The better you know God
in His ways, the more apparent your sin becomes to yourself.
But as our Savior, as verse 5 puts it, we know that God will be
faithful and forgive the sins we confess to Him. When we are
indifferent to our sins, unconcerned about knowing God's truth and
His ways, and only care about God's blessings, we're not walking
with God. These are clear signs that our
spiritual life is drifting rather than growing. Fortunately, God
is gracious to sinners. Verses 8-11 describe what God
does for sinners when we humble ourselves before Him. It says
in verse 8 that he instructs us, that's verse 8b. He guides
us, that's verse 9a. He teaches us his way, according
to verse 9b. When we fear God, as verses 12
and 14 say, he blesses us with knowing him, with forgiving our
sins, with watching over us for our moral good, and watches over
us for delivering us from our troubles, as we saw in verse
22. How's your relationship with God? Are you walking with Him,
desiring to know Him and follow His ways? Or is your spiritual
life adrift? As a believer in Christ, you
have the assurance that God's love and salvation are yours
forever. But the blessing of knowing God
comes from following Him and walking with Him daily. Take
time right now to assess your walk with God. Change your mind
in repentance and ask for God's forgiveness and a renewed desire
to live for Him if you find your spiritual life adrift. If you found this devotional
