And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the Lord had given him rest round about from all his enemies, that the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in the house of Cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in mine heart, for the Lord is with me. And it came to pass that night that the word of the Lord came unto Nathan, saying, Go, and tell my servant David, Thus saith the Lord, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in? Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up even to this day that I've walked a tent and been a tabernacle. All the places where I've walked with all the children of Israel to make my award to the tribes of Israel who have come only to feed my children. Now therefore, so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheep, and following the sheep, to be a ruler over my people, over Israel. And I was with thee, whithersoe'er thou went, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, by kind of a name of the great men that are in the earth. Moreover, I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more, neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more as before time. And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies, also the Lord telleth thee that he will I will set up my seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house before my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and the stripes of the children of men. But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before me. And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established forever before thee, thy throne shall be established forever, according to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak up to David. O Lord, wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed. Blessed be the Lord for evermore. Amen and amen. For those of you who attend our We've been going through Psalm 89, which is a commentary on 2 Samuel, that chapter we read earlier this morning, where Nathan comes to David and declares that God has blessed him richly. David, as you know, had conquered all his enemies to the left and to the right, and there was peace in the land for the tribes of Israel. And David has a heart to build the Lord a house of cedar. And Nathan said to him, do all of us in your hearts. And the Lord comes to Nathan at the night in a vision and instructs him, but no, David is not to build a house of cedar, but I will build his house. I will build his family, and his throne will last forever and ever. So God makes a covenant with David. Psalm 89 speaks of that covenant that the Lord God made with David between Nathan and the prophet. And the Psalm here speaks, as we discovered, of God's faithfulness. Faithfulness. God is a God of faithfulness. A God whom we can trust and depend upon. A God who has integrity. A God who is just. a God who is righteous. Verse 14 of our psalm reads, justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne. Mercy and truth shall go before thy face. His throne, his government, is pure and holy and righteous. It's not corrupt. It's not a dictatorship. It's not out for what it can gain. It's a throne, it's a kingdom of justice. Justice and judgment, justice and righteousness. All those things as a nation we lack at this time, and the world lacks. We long for that day when God's kingdom will be set up, as the Son of God returns, and he will set up a kingdom of justice and righteousness. and of a glorious kingdom everlasting. This psalm speaks to us of God's faithfulness. It's a key expression in this psalm. Forgive me, I need to repeat these verses, but verse one, he says, with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. This is the psalmist's declaration. I will sing of the mercies of God forever. Verse two, I said, mercy shall be built up forever, thy faithfulness shall now establish in the very heavens. Again in verse five, the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O Lord, thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints. Verse eight, O Lord, God of hosts, who is strong? Lord, like unto thee, all thy faithfulness round about thee. faithfulness, and my mercy shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. Verse 33. Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. His faithfulness his word, faithful to his covenant. This is one of God's attributes. He's a God who's faithful. We live in a day and generation where there's unfaithfulness. Marriages breaking up on every hand. Families being destroyed. Children having their foundation take away from that stable relationship between a husband and a wife. There's a lack of faithfulness and integrity in our government and in the governments of the world. A lack of faithfulness in the workplace. We live in a faithless society. He's promised there'll be seed time, winter and harvest, spring and summer. He's faithful. The seasons roll on, they're faithful. He's faithful to his promises. He said, I'll never leave you or forsake you. He's faithful to his promises. Friends, we need to remember these precious promises. He says, as your days are, so your strength will be. Another faithful promise of God. And I know you've proved those promises to be true in your own life. But there are times when we feel that God is unfaithful, that God has abandoned us. And the second part of our psalm speaks of God's apparent unfaithfulness. This is a psalm which is, again, honest. It's honest to us. He's speaking with his heart and his mind to the Lord in honesty. He's not seeking to hide things from God, which is impossible. He knows what we think and what we feel. And the psalm is here, in verse 38, a sudden change. In verse 36, we have that sealer. At the end of verse 37, the sealer. Consider what was said prior to this all. It was faithfulness. It is in verse 38. But thou hast cast off what thou hast been wroth with thine enemies. Twelve times saw this. Thou hast defamed his crown, verse 40. Thou hast broken down all his hedges. Thou hast brought his strongholds to ruin, verse 40. Thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice. Simon says, he said, Lord, this is your doing. This is how I perceive it. And it was true. The end of the Psalms, the end of Book 2, speaks of the Kingdom of David prospering. But the end of Book 2 pre-ends with this apparent desertion, this apparent breaking of the covenant. The people of Israel had great hopes for the Kingdom of David and for that Kingdom to stretch forever and forever. the people of God, the Babylonian exile was brought upon them, and they got taken away. So the Psalmist is looking back to those days of captivity, and says, God, where's your faithfulness? Where's the promises that you promised us? This is a Psalm for today. This is a song for Gordon Road and for other churches like that. Because we have looked at days of prosperity. We have looked at days of blessing. I still remember Dick standing in his pulpit and he was lamenting his previous days. The church was full. The tent meetings were overflowing with people. There was a hunger and thirst for the Word of God. And even in his day, when he was standing here, he lamented that the church was becoming smaller and smaller. And that trend hasn't diminished. That trend presses on. To be honest, we feel God's abandoned us. We need to be honest with the Lord, as the psalmist is honest with the Lord. We've had our programs, especially this morning, a number of services. We've been active in this town, working with all things. Youth meetings, Bible calls, all things, because of the Lord's love. We need to put energy and time and fire into these programs. We need to acknowledge that this is of the Lord. The Lord is speaking to us. There's nothing new for us. When the children of Israel went to captivity in Egypt, they cried to the Lord, how long, how long? And they first of all, God had abandoned them, God had deserted them to their enemies. And all through the history of the church, you see this cycle of growth and of ceasing of that growth. Even the disciples felt the same. came and chose his 12, and they went out, and they saw the miracles, the raising of the dead, receiving their sight. They were excited, they were exciting days, and they believed that he was the Messiah. And in Matthew 16, we read these words in verse 13. When Jesus came to the coast of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, whom do men say that I, son of man, am? And they said, some say you are John the Baptist, some Elijah, some Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. He said unto them, but whom say ye that I am? Simon Peter answered, he said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Wow, what a tremendous statement of faith that is. Jesus acknowledged that. Jesus said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood have not revealed it unto him. It's a revelation of God. His eyes were opened to who he was. He is the Christ, the Son of the living God. blood and flesh and not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say unto thee, Thou art Peter, upon this rock build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. What a tremendous promise. What a tremendous promise. If you turn to Luke 24, Verse 21, what was the reality? What did they feel after the crucifixion? They'd seen the Lord, they'd walked with Him, they'd spoken with Him, they'd touched Him, and you read these words in Luke 24 and 21, let's go back a bit, and their journey And they said unto him, what things? And they said unto him, concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet, mighty indeed, and word before God and all the people. They have a chief priest, and their rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. And this is the important verse. But we trusted that it had been he who truly did it. snatched from their hands, but will be trusted that it had been he who should have redeemed Israel. Because with their eyes they'd seen him being crucified, their hearts were despondent. They trusted, they had a hope. Did he not promise, and I'll build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it? He did promise that, didn't he? And friends, we need to look higher. Our vision needs to be raised up. We need to remind ourselves continually of the promise of God. I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail it. God is faithful, though in the appearances all things are troubling, they are not. God is faithful. I'm turning back to our psalm. Verse two, this psalmist is praising God with mercy, loving kindness. I have said, mercy shall be built up forever. So he's speaking there, forever, long term, stretched out eternity. Sing on the mercy of the Lord forever. Again, that's a key word in this psalm. Verse four, my seed was established forever. You get it? It's forever. Though we feel God has abandoned us, He hasn't. God is with us. I will build my church. And how can we be sure of that? A number of references to the heavens. 1 Corinthians 2, for I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever. My faithfulness shall be established in the very heavens. You cannot move the heavens, friends. It's immovable, it's steadfast, it's set, as are the promises of God. Verse five, he says, the heavens shall praise my wonders. Verse six, for who in heaven can be compared unto the Lord? Verse 11, the heavens are mine. is the immovable promises of God. The affairs of men, the plans and schemes of men, cannot overthrow the sovereign purpose of our God. It says, verse 35, once I swore by my owners that I will not lie, We have a God who doesn't lie. Do you believe that? Do you believe that? In your heart of hearts, we have a God who cannot lie. We have a God who is faithful. They speak in there of the seed of David, verse 36. His seed shall endure forever, and his throne as the sun before him. Who can blot the sun out? No man can blot the sun out. And to underline the permanency of the throne of David, it says, it shall be established forever as the moon. As the moon. It's drawing on the cosmos. It's drawing on the history of the kingdom of Israel. God is in heaven. His purposes are set. There's none like our God. The throne of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, will never diminish. He'll never be conquered. He'll never be overthrown. For God has promised, as the stars in the heavens, the sun and the moon, so will his throne endure forever. I wouldn't say conquered. As a church, nationally, And internationally, we see her in decline, we see her marginalised and attacked. We need to remember the promises of our God. And as the psalmist here has reminded the Lord that, you have done this. And I believe this is part of God's judgement upon our nation. Taking a candlestick away from our nation slowly. And I said to all those tonight, when He returns, will He appoint faith on the earth? Will we be faithful? Will we persevere? Will we be steadfast? He was again tonight. And the key theme there is, stand steadfast. Are we steadfast in the truth? Acknowledge that God has done this. And if God has done this, God can undo it. He's our only hope. Our programs, they fail. You don't put our trust in the arm of flesh, but surely our trust is in the Lord, the mighty God. Verse eight, that's the one, that Lord God of hosts, who is a strong Lord like unto you. Do you believe that? Do you believe God is strong? The message referring to the Song of Moses was there when the Egyptians were slaughtered on the seashore. The Lord God of hosts. He's the God of hosts. The spheres, the planets, the stars, the angels, the archangels, the armies of Israel. He's the Lord God of hosts. Who is a strong Lord like unto thee? Or to thy faithfuls round about thee? There is none. Friends, encourage yourself. Encourage one another. And our God is a strong God. He's not weak and feeble. He's not effeminate. He's a God of strength and power and majesty and glory. That's 18. The psalmist declares that the Lord is our defence. He's our defence. He's our defence. He's hedged us around. And these are expressions we utilize. And the people round about knew very well these expressions of that. It was expected of a king. The king was to provide for their need, provide for their protection. We can say that the Lord is our defence. It's ours, it's a corporate, people of God. The Lord is our defence, and the Holy One of Israel is our corporate. Again, he's emphasising the faithfulness, the holiness of God. He's the Holy One of Israel. And that expression's only used one other time in the book of Psalms. The Holy One of Israel. This is our God. This is our Saviour. He's holy. He's harmless. He's spotless. He's undefiled. He's altogether different to us. We are so unholy. He's so holy that He cannot even look upon sin. Hence the song is called the Holy One of Israel. The one who is gracious, and kind, and merciful. His psalm speaks selflessly of all the glorious attributes of his faithfulness, his love, his mercy, his tender compassion, and his warmth. Again in verse 18, he reads here, the Lord is our defence, our shield, our buckler, he carries us around, He's the Holy One of Israel. He's our King. He's our friend. He's our King. King. He's a glorious King. This King has compassion for you, your needs, your family. He's a king who's intimate. He can't go to Buckingham Palace and knock on the doors or speak to a queen. Impossible. This can't be done. It's perceived as etiquette to follow. This king, we have access by prayer, supplication. We have access to the king. We have a rich inheritance. in Christ Jesus. He's our King. He's our Defender. He's our Provider. He's our Confident. We trust His judgments and His timing. We question His sovereignty. We question His purposes. He's a King. He's Supreme. He's the Monarch. He does all things according to His will and to His purpose. He's a Faithful King. He's King of the Church and I believe all my heart when he says, I will build my church. What he calls us to be as a church, as a family of Christ here, is to follow his characteristic of faithfulness. Faithfulness. A psalmist, an honest man before his God. He cries out, I remind you again, on the hill Thursday night, verse 46, How long, Lord? What might hide myself forever? Is that the cry? Is that your cry? How long? How long? God's timing is not our timing God's ways are not our ways He calls us to be patient Patient and to be faithful and to remain steadfast and immovable The cry, the saints said, Revelation 6, how long, Lord? How long to justify the bloody marks? Revelation 22, how long, Lord? How long? The Lord Jesus says, even so. Long for that faith, you pray for that faith. Come together here on the first day, pray. How long, Lord? How long will... we see the church diminish. How long till he brings revival to the church? How long before he brings revival to my soul, to my apathy, to my laziness? How long till he stirs me up? How long? How long, how much do you long for his glory? Verse 17, for thou art the glory of their strength. I don't see the glory of His strength. For thou art the glory of their strength. We long to see that glory. Not for our sakes, not for numbers' sakes, not for filling these chairs, but for His glory and for His name's sake.
