Hello and welcome to our broadcast. We are looking in Genesis chapter 27. Have your Bible ready if you can. Well, I'm thinking today that in order to really get the content of this chapter, we need to read it through. It is one of those chapters that I wish wasn't in the Bible, but it's here. And it says it came to pass that when Isaac was old, he's about 137 years old here, and his eyes were dim, and we'll see that more than his eyes were dim, his spiritual abilities were very dim as well. so that he could not see he called Esau his eldest son and said unto him my son and he said unto him behold here am i and he said behold now i am old I know not the day of my death." It's important to understand that Isaac will live another 43 years after verse number two. He didn't know that, but he's getting in too much of a hurry here. Now, therefore, take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver, and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison. and make me savory meat such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless thee before I die." Now, you notice his focus is almost totally on himself. Oh, I need some more of that meal. I want that venison. Get me some of that before I die. It's all about me. Rebekah heard, it says here in verse number 5, when Isaac spake to Esau his son, and Esau went to the field to hunt for venison and to bring it. And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, Bring me venison, and make me savory meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the Lord before my death. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice, according to that which I commanded thee. Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats, and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth. And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death. And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. My father, peradventure, will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver, and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing. And his mother said unto him, upon me be thy curse, my son, only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.' And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother, and his mother made savoury meat such as his father loved. And Rebecca took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau. which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son. And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck. And she gave the savory meat and the bread, which she had prepared, unto the hand of her son Jacob. And when he came unto his father, and said, My father, and he said, Here am I, who art thou my son? And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn. I have done according as thou biddest me. Arise, I pray thee, sit, and eat my venison, that thy soul may bless me.' And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the Lord thy God brought it to me. And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may field thee my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not. And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father, and he felt him, and said, The voice is the voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau. And he discerned him not. A very important, very important verse. He discerned him not. Because his hands were hairy as his brother Esau's hands, so he blessed him. No discernment. Making a bad mistake here. And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am. And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat, and he brought him wine, and he drank. And his father Isaac said unto him, come near now and kiss me my son. And he came near and kissed him and he smelled the smell of his raiment and blessed him. Can you imagine that? There's something stinking here, all right. Something rotten here. He smelled him and he blessed him. And he said, see, the smell of my son is the smell of the field, which the Lord hath blessed. Like I said, Isaac has no discernment anymore. Therefore God gave thee of the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, and the plenty of corn and wine. Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee. Be Lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee. Cursed be everyone that curses thee, and blessed be he that blesses thee. And it came to pass as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting. And he also had made savory meat and brought it unto his father and said unto his father, let my father arise and eat of his son's venison that thy soul may bless me. And Isaac, his father, said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn, Esau. Get this verse. And Isaac trembled very exceedingly and said, Who? Where is he that hath taken venison and brought it me? And I have eaten of all before thou camest and have blessed him, yea, and he shall be blessed. And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father. And he said, Thy brother came with subtlety, and hath taken away thy blessing. And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times, he took away my birthright, and now, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, has not reserved a blessing for me." Well, we'll skip down to verse 41. It says, Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him. And Esau said in his heart, the days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then will I slay my brother Jacob. And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah. And she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice, and arise. Flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran, and tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's fury be turned away. few days turned in to twenty years, and it is doubtful that Rebecca ever saw her son again. She said, Tarry with him for a few days, until thy brother's anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done unto him. Then I will send and fetch thee from thence. Why should I be deprived also of you both? in one day. And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life. Yeah, she ought to be. I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me? Well, her life's not doing her much good either. in either case because she has turned her back on the things of God. Now we're going to be able to just get started into this chapter. We're going to look at it and see how could we get from such a state where only three chapters ago we have a beautiful love story where Rebecca lights off her camel and comes to Isaac, and it's just a beautiful, beautiful story. Only three chapters later, we have all this lying and deceit. How does this happen? It happens very quickly when we get out of the will of God, and we're going to look at it. So we'll go back to verse number one, and let's work our way through this chapter. In verse number 1, chapter 27, it says, It came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son? And he said unto him, Behold! here am i and he said behold now i am old i know not the day of my death now therefore take i pray thee thy weapons thy quiver and thy bow and go out to the field and take me some venison now make me meet he said let's read a little more Make me savory meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat, that my soul may bless thee before I die." Here he is now thinking it's pretty well over. He's going to live another 43 years, but he doesn't know that. And he is old, his eyes are dim, and so is his brain. His deception is so plain here, he can't see it. He does not have any discernment anymore. How did it happen like this? Well, it happens like this very, very simply, and it can happen to you, and it can happen to me. Here's what took place. Back in Genesis chapter number 24 and verse number 63, we read that Isaac went out to meditate in the field at Eventide. You remember the story. He went out there to meditate at Eventide. You remember, he looked across the hills there, and there came the camels. It was an exciting day. Here comes a bride for Isaac. Well, the next time we have the word field mentioned, it is in chapter 25 and verse number 27, and it says the two boys grew, now he's got two children, and Esau, it says, was a man of the field and he was a mighty hunter. Now there's nothing mentioned here about any meditation. No, he's just going along with the things that he wants to do in life. Nothing wrong with hunting, it's just that he's leaving God out of the picture. So from the field, the first mention here, we have Isaac went out in the field to meditate, Well, we have Esau goes out in the field to hunt. The next time we read about the word field, it's in Genesis chapter 27 and verse number 3. And Isaac says to his son, go out to the field and get me some venison. Now, what he should have been teaching his son was go out to the field and meditate like I did when I first met your mother and we'll all be on track with what God wants. No, the meditation thing is gone now. He's going through all the things that life demands, and nothing wrong with eating venison, nothing wrong with hunting. He's just leaving God out. Go out in the field and get some venison. Well, the next time we read about the word field is in Genesis 27 and verse 27, and it says that Isaac, he smelled the smell of the field on his son, and so he blessed him with no discernment whatsoever from the Lord. He is determining that he's being deceived here. How is he being deceived? Because of the smell of the field. Where's God in all of this? God isn't in all of this. And that's how it goes from where he went out into the field to meditate at even, and God was most important in his life. Well, as he comes to the end of his life, or what he thinks is the end of his life, God's not so important anymore. Well, let us be careful not to make the same mistake, because it's easy to do that as we go through the routines of life. You only need to go back to the story of Noah. The Bible says they married, they were given in marriage, they just went on living and left God out until the flood came and took them all away. Now here we have this man of God doing the same thing, just leaving God out. Well, there's that music in the background tells us this broadcast is over again already. Tune in tomorrow, we'll pick it up here in the next verse. We'll try to make it plain and we'll try to make it simple.
