And you may turn with me in your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 1. Hebrews 1 in verse 5, Hebreos 1, versículo 5. For to which of the angels did God ever say, you are my son, today I have begotten you? Or again, I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son? Father, you have shown us in your word that your great joy is Christ. You said, this is my son who I'm well pleased. God, I pray that you would teach the church today that Christ is to be our greatest joy. God, would you show us the joy that we have in Christ's coming and humbling himself in the incarnation. Would you show us the great joy that we have in Christ giving himself to be our propitiation, you putting him forward for that. Would you show us the great joy and hope that we have in the resurrection of Christ. and seated on his throne, the surety we have in the King Jesus. God, would you show us the great hope we have in his return. And once more, he'll be put forward. Help us to delight in Christ this morning. In Jesus' name I pray, amen. You may be seated, put in tomorrow's santo. I want to start this morning with a question. What is your joy? ¿Qué es tu gozo? What is your great joy in this life? What makes you more happy than anything else? What is it that you say when this happens or when I do this? ¿Cuál es cuando tú digas que cuando pasa esta o cuando hago esta, I have great joy? Yo tengo grande gozo. We delight in things all the time. Deletamos en cosas siempre. Things so small as food. Cosas tan pequeñas como comida. Or so small as a small gift from someone. Those aren't bad. Estas cosas no son malas. But what is the joy of your heart? ¿Qué es el gozo de tu corazón? Where is all of your delight? ¿Dónde está todo tu deleite? What is it that makes you content and satisfied? ¿Qué es lo que te hace satisfecho? What is it that drives your life. ¿Qué es lo que lleva tu vida? It was said of Jonathan Edwards. Alguien dijo de Jonathan Edwards. The glory that awaited him there was what carried him through this life as he was here. Now, I want to give you a context. The author was writing in a biography of Jonathan Edwards. And was talking about how much he hated things of this world. And then the description, entonces la descripción. The glory that awaited him there was what made him able to continue to live here. Could that be said of you? We ask the question, what is the delight of God? There's only one, solo hay uno, and it's Christ, es Cristo. This is my son whom I am well pleased. And the author of Hebrews wants to bring this out here. El autor de Hebreos quiere sacar esto. Look at Christ. Mira Cristo. Don't look at Moses. No miras a Moses. Don't look at the angels. Don't worship something that's not Christ. Give all of your direction and all of your attention to him. That's why the author of Hebrews said, he sustains the universe by the word of his power. Because He wants you to know that you only have and are what you are because of Christ. He wants you to know that everything in your life is dependent on Him. Now, He's going to do something in the text today that you need to see the price of Christ. He has exalted Him to the highest in this introduction. He had exalted Christ to the highest in this introduction. Set Him on high. He put Him on high. So you would see, para que veas, he is to have the first place in your heart, que el debe tener el primer lugar en tu corazón. Now, he's arguing that Jesus is greater than the angels. We have covered why he's speaking of the angels. But now I want us to look at his argument. ¿Cómo el autor llega a esta conclusión? We say many times here in this church, nosotros decimos muchas veces en esta iglesia, that the only rule of faith in practice for us, que nuestra única regla de fe y practica, is the word of God, es la palabra de Dios. I want to explain that some, quiero explicar esto poquito. It's our only rule of faith. That means that the scriptures are where we get all of our doctrine and where we receive the doctrine to where we put our faith. So we learn the truths of God from the scriptures. So when the confessor, the catechism asks, cuando el catecismo pregunta, what is the word of God? Que es la palabra de Dios? Or what does the word of God principally teach? Que principalmente enseña la palabra de Dios? It teaches us who God is. Ese nos enseña quien es Dios and what is required of man. Y que se requiere del hombre. So it's our only rule of faith, who God is. Y practica, it's our only rule of practice. Es nuestra unica regla de practica. So it's only in the scriptures that we see what God commands of the church. It's solo in the scripturas donde vemos lo que Dios manda de la iglesia. For example, por ejemplo, what if I told you, que tal yo les diga. that this Easter, Esta Semana Santa, we're going to cancel our worship service. Vamos a cancelar nuestro servicio de adoración, and we are going to have a drama of an Easter bunny. You would all say, what have you done to my pastor? Todos dirán, ¿qué has hecho con mi pastor? You've lost your mind. Has perdido tu mente. You see, we're commanded in God's Word, estamos mandados en la Palabra de Dios to preach and teach, a predicar, a enseñar, to hear the Word of God, a escuchar la Palabra de Dios, to sing to God, a cantar a Dios, to take up an offering, a tomar una ofrenda, to give, a dar, to pray, a orar, We are not commanded to have a drama about the Easter Bunny. So we believe that the Word of God regulates our worship. And you would say, now why are you saying this in Hebrews? Well, our text says, for to which of the angels did God ever say? You see, all of the book of Hebrews, Todo Libro de Hebreos, is going to depend on the scriptures. Va a depender de las escrituras. And it's an amazing time that he's writing this to the church. Because in our society, if I use this argument, en nuestra sociedad, si yo uso este argumento, the next question is this. El siguiente pregunto es esto. How do you know the word of God's true? But not here. Pero no aquí. They believe it's true. Ellos creen es verdad. And so he says God said. Entonces él dijo, Dios dijo. Or God did not say. O Dios no dijo. And so he is going to depend on the entire letter here. Él va a depender aquí en toda la carta on the word of God. So the palabra de Dios. I would encourage you to be on the Bible reading plan. If you are reading on the Bible reading plan, si estas leyendo en la plan de lectura, you noticed something in our worship service today. Our Bible reading was the same reading as this morning. The odds of that happening are astronomical. So you received a special blessing this morning. But I would encourage you to be reading through the Bible. It will help you understand Hebrews. Te va a ayudar a entender Hebreos. Matthew in the Bible, the Gospel of Matthew, Libro de Mateo, Evangelio de Mateo in the Biblia. quotes the Old Testament more than any other book in the Bible. It quotes the Old Testament 96 times. And Hebrews cites the Old Testament 86 times. So it is the second the book that cites the Old Testament more than any other apart from Matthew. The whole book of Hebrews will explain. Todo libro de Hebreos va a explicar. The Old Testament we see the shadow. En el Antiguo Testamento vemos la sombra. But here is the reality. It also shows us the authority of the scripture. And we'll see that throughout the entire book of Hebrews. You need to know. The scriptures are to have authority in your life. I want us to see something here first. Before we get to what is written, I want you to see the manner in which the apostle shows that Jesus is superior to the angels. The Apostle here shows that Jesus is superior to the angels. So the author is proving the point Jesus is superior to the angels. So the author here is proving his point that Jesus is superior to the angels. Number one, numero uno. The testimony that he gives is from the scriptures. A testimony that He gives of the Scriptures. So, He has been given a name that is above theirs. He has been given a name above them or superior to them. How do we know? How do we know? Of which of the angels did God ever say? Of the angels which God has said. It says, for which of the angels did God ever say? It says, of which of the angels God has said. The apostle here appeals to the rule of faith of the Jewish people. The apostle here makes his argument according to the rule of faith of the Jews. Listen to what Isaiah 8.26 says. Look at what Isaiah 8.20 says. To the teaching and to the testimony. If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. He says, to the law and to the testimony. If they do not say according to this, it is because it has not dawned on them. If they do not speak according to the testimony of the scriptures, it's because the light hadn't come on yet. I want you to know something. So many people came out and prophesied Trump's going to be the president. It's a good thing we don't live according to the nationalistic law of the Old Testament. It's good that we don't live according to the nationalistic law of the Old Testament. We would be stoning some folks right now. We would be stoning some folks right now. When someone speaks according to their own heart. When someone speaks according to their own heart. Let us shut our ears. Que ceramos nuestros ojos. Let the word of God be our rule. Let the testimony of Scripture be true, and men liars. Is that what Paul says in Romans? Lo que Pablo dijo en Romanos? So the apostle here argues from the scriptures. Secondly, the apostle argues negatively from the authority and perfection of the scriptures. Segundamente, el argumente negativamente de la autoridad y perfección, those are scripturas, in relation to faith and the worship of God. Now this is huge, this is grande. So look what he says, mira lo que dice. For to which of the angels did God ever say? Now, Paul is writing to, Paul writes to the Colossian church. Pablo escribe a la iglesia en colosenses, and he says not to worship the angels because it's not commanded. And here, the author is saying, aquí el autor está diciendo, His name is greater than them because he never said this of them. This is important for the church. The argument here is that it does not say anywhere in the scripture that they are exalted. We don't have a standard to say the angels are exalted. And we use this type of argument all the time. Nosotros usamos siempre este argumento. Just like with the Easter Bunny. Como con el Canejo de Pascua. We're commanded to preach and listen. Estamos mandados a predicar y adorar, but we're not commanded to do other things. Pero no somos mandados a hacer otras cosas. Here, we see the regulative principle. Aquí vemos el principio regulativo that validates our worship, que valida nuestra adoración. So we can argue from the negative of scripture. We are not commanded to do this. The author here of Hebrews does that. And thirdly, the manner in which he's writing this. The author acknowledges that there's different ranks among the angels. He says here, dice aquí, for to which of the angels did God ever say? So there wasn't any of the angels that he said this to. Daniel writes of a higher angel in Michael. But God never said this to him. In Revelation 12.7 and Apocalypse 12.7, it refers to the dragon and his angels. And that is referring to Satan. And so it seems that he is the head of his demons. So we can deduce here, that there is a rank among the angels. liderazgo entre los ángeles. I want to get to what is written now. So, he argues from scripture. Él argumenta de la escritura. And he's going to argue from Psalm 2. Y va a argumentar de Salmo 2. We saw that last week. Vemos eso la semana pasada. What is he arguing? Pero que esta argumentando? Here is the testimony concerning the Son. This is Christology. Este es Cristología. This is to study Christ and him crucified. Este es estudiar Cristo y el crucificado. This is the doctrine of the Bible. Este es la doctrina de la Biblia. This is what we're to give our lives to. The preeminence of Christ. The author's intention here is to show us how Christ is exalted. If there's anything you can take and apply to your daily life, is that Christ is King and reigning. And that He is on His throne. And that He sustains all things. And that He is to be first in your life. The author is showing us how his authority, honor, and rule is fixed far above the angels. So first, I want you to see in the text here. Quiero que veas primero en el texto. This testimony belongs to Christ. That this testimony belongs to Christ. So we saw that this comes from Psalm 2. We see that this comes from Psalm 2. So you'll have an argument. So you have an argument. Well, who wrote Psalm 2? Who wrote Psalm 2? Well, David wrote it. David wrote it. Ah, then it's not necessarily Christ. It's David. So it's not necessarily Christ. It's David. How do we know? Como sabemos? How do we know that blessed is the one who takes refuge in him? And it's Christ. How do we know that it's not David going and conquering Jerusalem? And this is just for the nation. And it's only the promised seed of David, or the promise of David, to sit on his throne and rule. Acts 4, 25-27, Hechos 4, 25-27. Who threw the mouth of our father David, your servant said, by the Holy Spirit? Why did the Gentiles rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his anointed. For truly this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and all the peoples of Israel. This text acknowledged that David wrote it. But it only applies it to Christ. David wrote of Christ. Acts 13, 32, and 33. Hechos 13, 32, and 33. And we bring you the good news that what God had promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us, their children, by raising Jesus, as also is written in the second Psalm. You are my son today, I have begotten you. Acts 13, 32, 33. And we also announce to you the Gospel of that promise that was made to the fathers, which God has fulfilled to their children, to us, resurrecting Jesus. As also in Psalm 2, it is written, My son, it is you that I have given you today. Once again, we see Psalm 2 quoted. But the only application is to Christ. The nations rage, and the peoples plot in vain. And it's Christ that is the answer. It's Cristo que es la respuesta. Hebrews 5.5, Hebrews 5.5. So also Christ did not exalt himself to make a high priest, but was appointed by him who said, you are my son today. I have begotten you. Así también Cristo no se glorificó a sí mismo, haciéndose Pontiff is easy, but the one who said to him, you are my son, I have entered you today. So we see the testimony of scripture. We see the testimony of scripture. It's Christ. It's Christo. You can read the commentaries of the Jewish priest even. You can still read the commentaries of the Jewish priests. It's Christ. It's Christo. It can't be another. It can't be another. You don't have any comfort putting your trust in David. The psalm says, blessed the one who trusts in him. The psalm when he said, bienaventurado el quien confia en el, or takes refuge in him, or toma refugio en el. What about the man whose wife David looked at? He had no comfort in David. Él no tiene consolación con David. And the fear had to be, el temor tenía que ser. What if he does that again? He ran from his own son. What if he does that again? He fled the city. Let him be overrun by a wicked king. What if he does that again? But blessed is the one who takes refuge in Christ. We do see David as a type of Christ. But he is not Christ. And second, we see that this testimony is prescribed a name. And that name is Son. And I want you to see this. Jesus Christ is called the Son by the Father. And this is where we get into theological problems. The whole point of the author here, todo el punto del autor aquí, is that Jesus Christ has been given a name superior to theirs. That name is son. Este nombre es hijo. And it's true that sometimes in the Bible that men are referred to as the sons of God. In Job, in Hob, the angels are called the sons of God. In Hob, the angels are called the sons of God. But never in this manner. But never in this manner. You are my son, today I have begotten you. You are my son, today I have begotten you. So, never in this manner. Never in this manner. This is the highest of honor. Ese es el honor mas alto. There is not a greater honor. No hay un honor mas alto. He has given Christ all things. And if the church would just get this doctrine, we would live so much easier during these times. Christ is the owner and ruler of all. They can't do anything to us. No pueden hacer nada a nosotros. What can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus? Do you know what it means to be justified in Christ? It means that God took all of Christ and all of his righteousness And he put all of our wickedness on Christ. He punished him on the cross. And he took his righteousness and dressed us in it. And he calls us his righteousness. That's what it means to be in Christ. Do you really think God's gonna let the world rise up against his own son? Let us not be ignorant. Que no seamos ignorante. Jesus, in Revelation 22, Jesus in Apocalypse 22 says, I am the alpha and the omega. El dijo, yo soy el alfa y el omega. I'm the first and the last. Yo soy el primero y el ultimo. I'm the beginning and the end. Yo soy el primero y el fin. We're gonna see this in a moment. Him as creator and judge. Que el como creador y juez. It's all given to Him in the name Son. I want you to see this. Quiero que veas esto. God has declared throughout the Bible, Dios ha declarado a través de la Biblia, that He is a jealous God. Él es un Dios celoso. and that he does not share his glory with another. And yet here, the author of Hebrews is saying, y aquí el autor de Hebreos está diciendo, to which of the angels has he ever said, del cual de los ángeles ha dicho, you are my son. Today I have begotten you. Eres mi hijo. Hoy te engendro. He shares his glory. Comparte su gloria. Because it is his glory. Porque es su gloria. It's a shared glory. It's un gloria compartido. Jesus prayed, Jesus oró in the high priestly prayer, in the oración de gran sumo sacerdote. Glorify me, then I may glorify you. That's what we see in the text, lo que vemos en el texto. The father praising the son, and the son praising the father. So we see here the preeminence of Christ. So this vemos aqui the preeminence of Christ over the angels, sobre los angeles, in the name that he is given, en el nombre que el esta dado, in the name son, en el nombre hijo. So lastly I want you to see the honor that is given him. The text says something strange. El texto dice algo extraño. Today I have begotten you. Yo te he engendrado hoy. So we've got this strange word in begotten. Tenemos un palabra extraño en engendrado. We understand this to mean that someone is the father of someone else. Sometimes when we see the word begotten or engendrado, we want to think they've been birthed. I want to quote the old guys here. We're going to have to determine what this means. But there's one thing I know it doesn't mean. Jesus, God is not saying of Christ. I created him, yo lo creo. You remember our memory verse. Recuerdas nuestro versículo de memoria. He has spoken to us in these last days through his Son, by whom he created the world. All things that were created were created by Christ. He is the creator. Not created. So what does it mean then to be begotten? I want to give you a four Fold answer of the begottenness of Christ. The word means to be brought forth. La palabra quiere decir lanzado o traído adelante. Now, I want us to take this in the context of Psalm 2. We heard it last week. The nations are angry and they rise up in counsel against God and his anointed Christ. Acts told us that it's Christ. So God's reaction is that he laughs. And he mocks them. And he says, I have set my king in Zion. You are my son. Today I have begotten you. Eres mi hijo hoy te he engendrado. So, four truths of that. Cuántas verdades de esto? How is he begotten of the Father? Cómo es engendrado por el Padre? How has the Father brought him forth? Number one. Número uno. At his birth. Su nacimiento. The humility of Christ being born into the nature of a man. When Philippians says, Cuando Filipenses dice, that he humbled himself being in the form of man. You remember Lazarus when he dies? Recuerdas Lazaro en su muerto? Shortest verse in the Bible, verse 1135 in John. Jesus wept. There's volumes written on why he wept. I want to clear this up for you really easy. He did not weep because his friend died. He had just told the disciples he's going to die. And I'm glad. so that you will see the glory of God. He was not sad that his friend died. It's the king of glory standing before his believers. And none of them believe. And he's veiled in human flesh. Es velado en el carne humana. Jesus is birthed in a manger. Received into the world by cows and animals. Recibido al mundo con vacas y animales. And the angels sang. Y los ángeles cantaron, glory to God in the highest. Gloria al Señor en la altura. Why? Por qué? God had begotten him. Dios ha engendrado a él. He brought him forth. Lo puso adelante. Secondly, he brought him forth in the sacrifice of the cross. Segundamente, él lo puso adelante in the sacrifice of the cross. He was begotten to be the sacrifice. Él era engendrado para ser sacrificio. It says this in Romans. Dice esto en Romanos. God put him forward as a propitiation for our sins. For God so loved the world, he gave his only son. De tal manera, Dios ama al mundo. El dio su hijo. We see in Abraham, vemos en Abraham, do not kill that boy. No toques el niño. Don't even touch him. Ni lo toques. And you see a ram in the thicket. And Abraham tells God. The Lord will provide. And we see Christ put forward on the cross. the begotten of the father, en general del padre, as the son, como el hijo, the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham, el cumplimento de la promesa de Abraham, sacrificed for his people, sacrificado por su pueblo. Thirdly, tercera. And I think probably specifically in this text, the resurrection of Christ. He brought him forth. Not only that. He not only rose him from the dead. but he exalted him to the highest place. Pero el lo exalto a el a la mas alto. And he set him at his right hand. Y el lo puso a el como su mano derecho. And he gave him the name that is above every name. He was rejected by men. El era rechazado por los hombres. And exalted to the highest place by God. Exaltado a la mas alto por Dios. And given that name a son. Y dado ese nombre como hijo. And he gave him to be the rule and sovereign over all things. Especially the church. And to do what Psalm 2 said. Ask of me and I'll give you the nations. And he is gathering the church through his body now. And he is ruling and reigning over all the world. So we see him begotten of the Father in his resurrection. You might think, well, Hebrew stops there. How do you have a fourth point? Remember, all through Hebrews we're gonna see something. The already and not yet. We will see Christ begotten. Brought forth. puso adelante, upon his return, sobre su regreso. There will come a day when the clouds be rolled back, va a ser un dia donde las nubes se separan, and a trumpet will sound, la trompeta va a sonar, and he's going to descend on the earth, y el va a descender sobre la tierra. And on that day, every knee will bow in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. And proclaim he is Lord. Because he's the son. And that is his position. He will come on that day, va a venir en ese día, and He will take the church with Him to glory, y va a tomar la iglesia con Él en gloria, and we will receive the promised inheritance in Him, y vamos a recibir la herencia prometida en Él. But be warned today, pero serán advertidos hoy. The same One that is the Son, el mismo que es el Hijo, is the one who will come in judgment. Es el que va a venir en juicio. And he will be put forward as the judge of all the earth. And everyone that is not in Christ, y todos los que no están en Cristo, will suffer the eternal punishment from the Son. I want to tell you, church, que reciete iglesia. The only conclusion that you can come to from this text is I must worship the King of Glory. My life is to be dedicated to Him. And anything else you do with your life is a complete and utter waste. I want to challenge you this morning. You better give everything to Christ or He will come for you. Because everything has been given to Him. And He has the power to give life and He has the power to judge. You can pray all you want to the angels. They can do nothing for you. Because he's been given a name and an honor above every name and honor. And it's the name of son. He is king. Let's pray, oramos. Amen.
