Lord of Might

The second verse of O Come, O Come Immanuel has an unusual reference to God. It speaks of God at Mt. Sinai. The writer of the song states that this is the God that should come and deliver Israel. That event was not one that brought comfort to Israel, but they were terrified of the presence of God. Throughout the Scriptures Sinai is a picture of the impossibility of man to approach God. He is a God of judgment through the law. The power that mankind should look for comes from another mountain, Zion. This is a picture of God's salvation power displayed in Jesus Christ.
