Good morning, good morning pilgrim. Glad you could drop by. Pull up a chair, sit down, pour yourself a cup of coffee. Well, grace and peace to you, all my brothers and sisters that might be here today. There's a truth that I want to share with you, and it's this. The blood of Christ It's the only thing that can truly cleanse our conscience and give us lasting peace with God.
My friend, this ain't just an idea I didn't just dream it up. It's the very heart of the gospel. It's a Bible. And it's a hope we hold on to every day, every day of our life. You know, when you first saw the cross, and you understood what Jesus did for you, saving your soul. When you realize the meaning of his shed blood, cleaning you up, you experience something wonderful. You were born again. Your conscience was purged from dead works.
Hebrews 9, 14, let's read that together. How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself offered himself without blemish to God. He purified our consciences from dead works to serve the living God. Cleaned us up. And that cleansing, it brought you peace. It wasn't that you stopped being a sinner or that you forgot your sins, but you found something. You found something that made your conscience quiet in a righteous way. You could stand before God's law and before God himself as if you'd never been guilty of a sin in your life.
Now, the secret to keeping that peace, to keeping your conscience clean, is to keep the blood of Jesus always before your eyes. Don't lose it. It's his blood alone that can wipe away the sins that come across your conscience every day. If those sins aren't dealt with right away, they'll stain your conscience, and they'll cloud your peace. Your peace will be gone. It's just like that fine steel sword. A drop of water can rust it. But if you wipe it off quickly, no harm is done to it. Leave it, though. Just leave that water lay on that blade. Lay there and lay there. and rust will ruin the blade. It's what happens to you. Sin works the same way. The moment it touches your conscience, apply the blood of Jesus right away. Otherwise, you'll find your peace slipping away.
So don't try to clean yourself up before coming to Christ. You can't do it. Don't think you need to pray or read yourself into a better mood before you ask for forgiveness. Do it right away. This other way, this working, working, working, that's not God's way. That's just trying to fix things yourself and you can't do it. It won't work. Go straight to Jesus. Go straight to the blood. Jesus and his blood will clean you up again. We need to be cleaned again and again. We all sin again and again. As 1 John 1, 9 says, if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Why did he tell us that? He knew we were going to sin. Charles Spurgeon once said, it's not your hold on Christ that saves you. It's not your hold. It is Christ himself. It's not your joy in Christ that saves you. It is Christ. It's not even faith in Christ, though that is an instrument. It is Christ's blood and his merits. That's the truth we need to hold on to, pilgrim.
Some folks worry that if we talk too much about forgiveness, it'll make people take sin lightly. But the opposite is true. The more you see what it costs Jesus to forgive you, the more ashamed you'll be of your sin, and the more you'll want to turn away from it. We got to turn from it, but we don't. We slip and we fall. We need to come to Jesus so he can pick us up. As Thomas Watson said, sin may be the occasion of our sorrow, but Christ is the only ground of our comfort. When you're compelled to go to God again and again and again and again, pilgrim, for forgiveness. Oh, how you learn to hate sin more and more. Not to love it or hate it less, but you hate it more and more.
Keep your conscience tender, but don't let it get sickly or fussy. You know, a healthy conscience sees what's true and does what's right. A sick conscience is always fretting over little things that don't matter. That kind of religion isn't what Jesus wants for us. He wants us to walk in liberty he's given us, not to be tied up in knots over every little thing.
The Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 8, 9 through 13, but take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. He cared about those with weaker consciences. But he didn't let their worries keep him from enjoying his freedom in Christ. Be honest. Be simple. Be humble. Be easy in your words and your ways. Don't act like you're putting on a show. Don't try to be something you're not. Let your faith be natural and your heart be free.
As John Bunyan wrote, he who would be content with the world shall find but find it but bittersweet. But he who would be content with Christ shall find him a sweet without bitterness. No bittersweet Jesus, all sweet. Let your conscience be clear. and your spirit cheerful and brotherly, whether you're at home, at work, or in church. Don't ignore little sins, but make sure they're really sins. Don't skip little duties, but be sure they're duties. A tender conscience doesn't make you hard to live with. It makes you a joy to be around.
You know, people will notice how you live with gladness and singleness of heart, just like it says in Acts 2 46. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they receive their food with glad and generous hearts. And you'll be adorning the doctrine of God our Savior in all things, Titus 2.10, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.
Let me tell you, friend, the Christian life is not about being perfect. We don't make that till we go home. It's about being washed repeatedly over and over and over again in the blood of Jesus. It's about keeping your conscience clean by going to him every time you stumble. You're gonna stumble. Don't let anything come between you and the blood. Don't let your feelings, your shame, or your pride keep you from running to Jesus.
Richard Baxter said, keep up your constant converse with God. Let every day begin and end with him. Pilgrim, that's how you keep your conscience clean. That's how you keep your peace, peace with God. And remember, a healthy conscience makes for a healthy Christian. It keeps you frank, cheerful, it keeps you helpful, not stiff, sour, or hard to please.
As Matthew Henry wrote, those that would keep their peace must keep their purity. So we must constantly be going to Christ, to our Lord, our Savior, again and again. So how do you keep your conscience clean? by continually applying the blood of Christ, by going straight to him, not trying to fix yourself first, by keeping your heart tender, but not troubled by things that don't matter, by walking in the freedom and joy of Christ, and by living simply and honestly with others. Let's close with the words of Jesus. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I'll give you rest, Matthew 11, 28. Do that often, over and over, repeatedly, again and again. Come to Him.
And from the Psalms, create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me, Psalm 5110, again and again, repeatedly, over and over again, created me a clean heart.
Let's pray together, pilgrim. Heavenly Father, thank you for the precious blood of Jesus, the blood that cleanses our consciences and gives us peace. Help us to come quickly to you whenever we sin, not trying to fix ourselves first, but trusting in your mercy and grace, because you've got so much of it. It's endless. Lord, give us tender hearts that hate sin and love righteousness. Keep our consciences healthy and our spirits joyful. Lord, teach us to walk simply. Walk honestly before you and others, adorning the doctrine of Christ in all things. Father, let your peace rule in our hearts. Let your love be seen in our lives. In Jesus' holy, precious name we pray. Amen. Maranatha. Come, Lord Jesus.
Well, it's going to be a nice day, Lord. Nice day to come. Come, Lord Jesus.
Friend, make it your habit to read your Bible every day. Pray often. The Word of God is your daily bread. Prayer keeps your heart close to your Lord, your Lord Jesus Christ, the one who saved you. Stay close to him. be talking to him.

And I'll see you later, the good Lord willing, and the creek don't rise. God bless, my friends. Love y'all.
