We live in a day and age when many in the world might believe that the church has lost the power that it once had. And in many ways, as we look on outward things, as we look at where we are today and in comparison to the things that have happened over the course of history, not only recent history, but even as we go back to the times of Scripture, there are occasions certainly where it seems to have lost its influence.
And of course, many in the world today are trying to extinguish, they are trying to hinder, they are trying to put obstacles in the way of the influence of the church of Jesus Christ. And it is also true that across the world, as we have been singing in that last hymn, that there are some of the people of God, there are some who have professed faith in Jesus Christ, and they do not have the same burden and they do not have the same passion and they do not have the same love for the things of God as they once did.
And there are none of us that are exempt from that. We all have a danger of growing cold in heart and becoming lukewarm. We think of the words of Christ recorded for us in Revelation 2, in the verses 15 and 16. Christ there, of course, speaking of the church in Laodicea. He says, I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot. Thy wood, thou wert cold or hot. So then, because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot.
And how sad that that was written of the church How sad that that was written of those who professed Christ as their personal Savior, this witness of the Lord that had grown cold in heart, that had become neither cold nor hot, but lukewarm. They had lost their love for the things of God. They had lost their zeal and their desire for the things of Jesus Christ.
And yet, we must say, so often it is true in the church today, so often in our own hearts as the people of God, that we can get into the state of, look, warmness, neither hot, neither cold, and drifted far from our first love of Jesus Christ. I was thinking back to the particular times of blessing in the land of Ulster, and even how the Lord had used the Free Presbyterian Church there in the early days.
But it would have once been asked as it came to time for the Sunday evening service, which was particularly dedicated to the preaching of the gospel and the invitation of souls to come to Christ. It was often asked, not if anyone would be saved tonight, but the question was often asked, how many? Because there were times when the Lord was moving, and at every single meeting, every occasion, when the doors of the house of the Lord were open, sinners were drawn in, and precious souls were saved.
And yet today, we must question and ask ourselves so often, not how many people are going to be saved, but will people even be in? Once prayer meetings were full of God's people, praying into the night, into the early hours of the morning, seeking the Lord's blessing, praying for the Lord to move. And yet across the land, so often it is only a handful of God's people meet to pray.
And concern for spiritual things vastly seems to be dwindling. And we need a revival. We need a revival in our hearts. We need the Lord to move. We need the Spirit of God to come. We need to be awakened. We need to be revived. We need to have a greater love for the things of God. We need a renewed zeal and figure for the things of Jesus Christ.
We want the Lord to move in his church. We want the Lord to work in his church. So what are we to do? How are we to regain ground? How are we to be that bright and shining light? How are we to see the Lord move in this day and in this age? And whilst we cannot manufacture revival, As some believe that they can, and as some have tried to do, yet there are steps that we can take, there are steps that we must take as the people of God, as the church of Jesus Christ, if we want the Lord to move, and if we want the Spirit of God to be in our midst.
The events of Acts chapter 2, the day of Pentecost here, which we've read this morning, they're, of course, very familiar to many. Here, the disciples of the Lord, a band of the Church of Jesus Christ, were meeting together. And as we go down through the narrative, we see how the Spirit of the Lord was poured out upon them in a way that was nothing short of spectacular. And the Lord moved, and many souls were saved. And people today will speak, well, we need another Pentecost. But this Pentecost is recorded in Acts 2. This was a very unique event. This was a very special time. This was a very unique moving of the Spirit off the Lord. These men of God were given a very unique and special gift and talent at this particular time for this time alone, the church was in its infancy, the New Testament church was just being built, and the Spirit moved often in ways like this as He did.
However, that is not to say that God cannot move again. That is not to say that we're not to expect the Spirit of God to move in a way that is powerful, in a way that is mighty, because He can. And we must pray that He will. Revival is our theme and our subject this morning. There are principles contained within this account of Pentecost that are applicable to us and that we must put into place. We want the Lord to move If we want to see the Spirit work, then we need to put these things into place in our lives.
Notice here, firstly, that these men were faithful in the sanctuary. They were faithful in the sanctuary. Look at verse number 1. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. Of course, when we speak of the sanctuary, are referring to the church building, that place where the church meets. And it's in this context that we want to look here at verse number one in these events that took place before us. There was a gathering of the saints of God. In verse 1, these disciples had gathered together to worship the Lord, right at the very outset of what was taking place, right at the very outset of the record and scripture of these miraculous, these marvelous events that took place where souls were saved, where the church was built. We have here in verse 1, the people of the Lord gathered together with one accord in one place.
On the day of Pentecost, two loaves were offered as a thanksgiving. It was praised that the harvest was ended, that the good things had been provided, that the things of the field had been brought in. It gets its name from the fact that it occurs in the 50th day after the feast, or off the feast of weeks, hence the word pente, which literally means 50th. And so these disciples here, they were gathering together on the feast day. They were gathering here to give thanks, It is clear from the events which occur here that as the disciples met that they were here in the attitude of worship. They were where the Lord would meet with them. They were gathering to give thanks unto the Lord. They were meeting, as was custom, as it was according to the ways and the times of that particular day, and of these feasts, and of the particular occasion of Pentecost, to raise their thanks to God for all that he had provided for them. They were gathered here in the attitude and in the spirit of worship. They were meeting to thank the Lord. They were meeting to praise the Lord. They were meeting to gather with the Lord. No doubt, as they gathered here in verse number one, they came with that longing, with that desire to meet with God as they praised Him.
Essential to any move of the Lord at any time, in any age, in any generation, in any occasion, In any particular circumstance, essential to any moving of the Spirit of God in our hearts and in his church is for us to be meeting where God is, to be in the presence of the Lord, being in the worship of him, gathering in his praise as these disciples were.
Notice how firstly it was a physical gathering. Verse number one, and when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. The disciples had gathered together. Of course, we know Scripture teaching of the unity of the saints of God. We know that there is that harmony, that uniting in Christ wherever we are in the world, wherever we're gathered, wherever we might be, whatever vast distance there might be between us. But here on this particular occasion, the Spirit of the Lord draws to our attention very particularly that not only were these men of the one Spirit, not only were they united in Christ, but they were here physically in one place. They had gathered themselves together.
Think of the words of Hebrews 10, verse 25, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some is. It's sad to say that throughout the ages right up to the days that we're in today, many people have forsaken the assembling of themselves together. That is not God's plan. That is not God's purpose. It is not God's desire for His church that we would not meet. that we would not be physically together, that we would not gather as we do this morning, and as we will this evening, and as we do on Tuesday night, and as we continue to do week after week in the house of the Lord, in the presence of God, looking for Him, praising Him, and listening for His precious voice.
And whilst there's a place, There's a use for online meetings and services being broadcast. They are not a replacement for what is evidently set forth here in Acts chapter 2 in the early New Testament church where saints come together, where we are physically gathered in the one place as a visible, evident testimony of the body of Jesus Christ. We know, of course, that there are those who cannot meet, there are circumstances where we cannot be in God's house, and those around the world cannot be in God's house, and the Lord allows for that. But there are many across the world today, and they have dismissed the relevance of meeting as these disciples did in Acts chapter 2. And there are others, and perhaps this can affect our own hearts and our own souls, who at times, in the busyness of life, And in all that we have to deal with, and in things to do with family, or material things, or whatever else it might be, we can begin to place a lesser significance on being found at the Lord's house. And distractions come in, and things pull us away from the public gathering to worship and to praise the Lord. And we get distracted by the busyness of life, and we get distracted by those family responsibilities, and we get caught up with material things, and we begin to lose in our hearts and in our souls this desire to be found where God's people are to be. And yet, when we do that, we miss out with the Lord. We miss out on His presence. We miss out on His blessing.
Dear believer, I encourage you, exhort you to place a priority on being found in God's house, whether it's here in the Lord's day, on Tuesday night as we gather to pray, gather where God's people gather. Don't forsake the assembling of ourselves together. We cannot expect the blessing of God. We cannot expect God to move in our hearts personally and in the lives of the congregation if we neglect the house of God, if we neglect this means of grace, if we do not gather as the saints of God of old have gathered.
These disciples, they were in the one place, in one accord. It was physical. Secondly, it was peaceful. We're told there that these disciples were all with one accord in verse 1, in one place. They were of one accord. In other words, there was no contention between them. There was no striving between these disciples. Remember, they came from different backgrounds. They had different experiences. They had different upbringings. And yet here we learn that they had come on this day of Pentecost to meet with the Lord physically, and there was no strife, no contention. They were of the same mind. They were of one heart for the work of God. They had a cordial affection, the one toward another. They were united, not only in Christ, but in their conversation, in their manner of living, in their worship, in their desires, in their attitude. They were here with one accord.
Think of the words of Psalm 133, verse 1, Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. It is good. It is pleasant. It is for the benefit of the church when God's people meet together in one accord, in unity. It has been too often the cases. As we said before, the churches have been split. God's people have been at disunity with each other. They've harbored bitterness, the one to the other. They have continued in disagreement and strife and contention. And that does not lend itself to the moving of the Spirit of the Lord within a particular people.
Dear saints of God, we're not to be working against one another, but we're to be as these disciples, together with one accord, together with that one mind, that one mission, that one purpose. Here, these saints of God, they were gathered with the purpose of thanking the Lord, with praising Him, with no doubt seeking His face in the attitude of prayer. That was their desire. That was their one accord. That was their unity. That was their purpose. They were not meeting for their own gain. They were not meeting to see who could be the most holy or who would look the best or whatever else it might be, but they were gathered with one accord in the presence of God.
And the church is not to be divided, but it's to be united. We're to be of one accord. We're to be of one mind as we seek the face of God, to desire his presence here in the house of God. There's to be harmony, there's to be unity, there's to be a togetherness, a oneness. As we meet, as these disciples met, we're to remember that we're off the one household of faith. We've been redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ. We all come and we all ought to come to the house of the Lord with that one purpose, to meet with our Savior and to gather with Him. And if we want God to move, if we want the blessing of the Lord upon His church, then we need to meet together in one accord in unity with the purpose of glorifying him, not for our own ambitions.
Really here it's a reminder that this is a heart issue. Why do we come to the house of the Lord? Why do we gather? Why do we commune with the saints of God? Why are we here? What is in our heart? What is our purpose? What is our desire? What is your desire this morning, dear child of God, as you come to the house of the Lord? What has been your preparation? What have you prayed to the Lord that he would accomplish in your life and your soul? Are we off the one of cord? Do we want the name of the Lord glorified? Do we want souls saved? Do we want the work of the Lord to go forth? or our hearts consumed with our own ambitions and desires.
Oh, these disciples, they were one accord in one place. Secondly, here we see that they were filled with the Spirit of God. Not only were they found here in the sanctuary, but they were filled with the Spirit of the Lord. Look at verse 4, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterances.
These men gathered with one accord in one place. The Spirit of the Lord came down and filled them. They received a special anointing and help of the Spirit of the Lord. And dear child of God, surely that is what the church needs today. Surely it's what we need in our lives personally. We need the Spirit of the Lord to move. It's what I need. It's what you need. It's what God's witness needs, whether it's on the global scale or a local scale.
If we want to live for Christ, If we want to raise a credible testimony and witness to His grace and His mercy, if we want to see the work of the Lord go forward and His house being built, we need the Holy Spirit of the Lord. That is essential. We don't need entertainment. We don't need gimmicks. We don't need special programs and events. We don't need the things of the world that so many other so-called churches have turned to, whether it's in music or drama or whatever else it might be. We need the Spirit of the Lord. We need God to come down. We need the Spirit to fall afresh upon us as he did here on the day of Pentecost to these men that were gathered in one accord in one place.
We need God to ignite a flame within us and within his church. If we want God's work to continue going forward, if we want to be a light in a dark place, we need the Spirit of God in our lives. I wonder, is that your desire this morning, dear child of God? Is that something you think of as you pray during the week? Is it something you pray for as you prepare your hearts to come to the services on the Lord's day? Do you plead that the Spirit of the Lord would come, that He would visit that he would move in power.
Sometimes we can be cautious and shy away from dealing with the Spirit and speaking of the Spirit because there are movements that have hijacked the Spirit of the Lord and misrepresent Him, and so out of caution sometimes we can hesitate to deal with these things. But we need the Spirit of the Lord to move, and God has promised a Spirit. And when the Spirit comes, and when the Spirit moves, and when He touches hearts and souls, and when He ignites a church, everything changes. And we have a zeal for His work, and souls will be saved, and God's people will be edified, and God's church will be built. We need to be praying for such a filling of God the Holy Ghost, for such a move of the Spirit of the Lord, that that would be evident.
In your own time at home, As you meet with the Lord, as you gather in the prayer meeting on Sunday night, as you meet on Tuesday evening to pray, we need to pray for the Spirit of the Lord. Without the moving of the Spirit of God, we will not see God's work built up. We will not see souls saved.
Psalm 127 verse 1 reminds us, Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. How does the Lord build this house? Through the moving of the Spirit of the Lord as he takes his word, as he comes and meets with us, as he moves in our hearts and our souls, as he convicts the sinner. And except the Lord build the house, we are laboring in vain. We need the Spirit of God to move.
Notice here that this filling of the Spirit was evident. Look at verse number 2, And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. This descending of the Spirit of God from heaven, it was not a secret thing, it was very evident. It wasn't something that went unnoticed. We read here that there was a sign from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind. We read there that it was sudden. There was no warning. There was no build up to this. But God, when he chose on this particular occasion, he moved immediately with the sound of the rushing wind. He came in an evident way.
I used to live in a place called Malile. It was a coastal village. Our house was about a 10-minute walk to the sea. And there were times, especially during the winter, when the winds got very strong. And as it forced its way past the house, you could hear it whistling. You could hear the bangs. You could see the effects of the wind. You could see the power that it had. And you could do nothing but notice it. It was there. It was evident. And this sound on the day of Pentecost was not the sound of a gentle breeze, but it was a mighty rushing wind. This was something that was evident.
Look at verse three, further to that. It says, there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Not only wind, but there was what appeared here like tongues of fire. This was the appearance of flames of fire parted. They looked like tongues. It was very obvious to see, just like the wind was obvious to hear.
Look then in verse 4, it says, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. These disciples then began to speak in other languages, languages that they were not trained in, languages that they had not learned. This was not their mother tongue, but the Spirit of God gave them this great utterance. Of course, this gift of tongues has ceased. It's no longer needed in our day because we have the complete revelation of Scripture. These miraculous gifts were reserved for the New Testament church here. And even then, the gifts of tongues here differs greatly to what many misrepresented to be in the Pentecostal movement today. But these disciples began to speak in other languages, and they were understood.
Look at verse 6. Now, when this was noise abroad, the multitude came together and were confounded. They were confused. They were troubled in mind because every man heard them speak in his own language. This wasn't some nonsense, but these men began to understand what the disciples were saying. And in other words here, this moving of the Spirit of the Lord upon the church, upon these men, it was evident. Men and women could see that something was different, something had taken place. God had moved upon these men.
And whilst when the Spirit of God descends upon people today, when he infills them, and that's what we want as a church, we're not saying there's going to be a sign of rushing wind and tongues of fire, but the world will notice if we're living in the Spirit of the Lord. The world will notice if we're a congregation that has been touched and anointed by the power of the Holy Ghost. It will be evident
The Holy Spirit will make such a difference in our lives that the world will see. People will take note. They will realize that there is something different. As they look upon the church, as they look upon the witness of the church, they will see that the Lord is there, that he is moving, that he is doing his work, that he is building his church. There will be evidence. This is not something that will go unnoticed.
Not only was it evident, but it was enabling. Read there in verse 4, we've touched on it already, about how when they were filled with the Holy Ghost, they began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. The Holy Spirit enabled them. They had a task before them that, humanly speaking, was impossible. They didn't speak the language of these men. There were so many that had come together, many different nationalities and languages, many different dialects, even within those languages. And if they were to witness of the gospel as they looked at it through human eyes, it was going to be impossible. They couldn't speak. They couldn't convey the word of God in a manner which they would understand. And yet the Lord enabled them. When the Spirit of God came down, He equipped them. He gave them what they needed to do the Lord's work.
As these men had come together, many speaking different languages that the disciples did not speak, the Holy Spirit came and He infilled these men, and this multitude then began to hear the gospel in their own mother tongue. Dear believer, we have a great task before us, a daunting task. As we look at the world today, as we see the hatred for the things of God, as we see the apathy towards the gospel and even the anger towards the things of Jesus Christ, we have a task that, humanly speaking, it is impossible, and we cannot do it without the enabling of the Holy Spirit. And so we need to pray. that the Spirit would come.
Not only were they filled with the Spirit, thirdly, here we see they were fearless in their speaking. They were fearless in their speaking. Verse 4 again, and when they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now, when these men began to speak, there were some of the multitude here as they gathered to listen who were in doubt. Others did not believe what they were saying. Others mocked them. They claimed that they were drunk. Look at verses 12. And 13, and they were all amazed and were in doubt, saying one to another, what meaneth this? And others mocking said, these men are full of new wine, the strongest of wine. They thought these men were drunk. They thought they had lost their minds. This was a crowd that in some respects was hostile. They were confused. They didn't know what was going on. And yet these men preached on. They witnessed on. They continued to serve in the midst of all the jeers and the mocking, in the midst of all the confusion, in the midst of those who doubted in their hearts and didn't really have a clue what was going on.
These men continued to serve the Lord, and they preached and they shared the gospel of Jesus Christ, whatever the circumstance. The infilling of the Holy Spirit made them fearless in their witness.
Dear believers, we reach out with the gospel to those that we come into contact with, to those in this area that the Lord has placed us, to those that God brings across our path. There will be some who will be hostile. There will be others that will mock. There will be those that will call us fools and accuse us of being mad, but we're to press on. We're to continue. We're not to be discouraged in the face of opposition, in the face of confusion.
And we look at the world today, and there is much confusion, and men are confounded, and they have no idea what is going on. And there's confusion, and there's mocking, and there are those that are questioning what the church is doing. But we're to stay the course. We're to preach Christ and Him crucified. We're to continue as these disciples did.
Notice what they spoke of in their fearlessness. Firstly, the canon. the canon of Scripture. And we deal here particularly with Peter, as it is his sermon that's recorded for us in this chapter, but others were speaking here at the same time, and they would have been doing the same.
But look at verse number 16. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel. These were the words of Peter. This is his sermon. Peter wasn't speaking of anything here that he had made up. He wasn't focused on fables and stories. He wasn't trying to entertain the crowd that was before him, but he began to preach the Word of God.
If we created a worship band, if we put on a drama week by week, if we brought other gimmicks, as others have done, into the church, just dwindling away the sermon to a little epilogue at the end, I have no doubt that people would flood in through the doors. That's what they do. They're coming to be entertained. They're coming that their ears might be tickled, that they might come in and out of the house of the Lord and not be challenged and not be provoked by Scripture, but to leave feeling good and entertained.
However, that is not what we ought to do. We're to preach the Word of God. We're to stick as Peter did to the Scriptures of truth. He didn't give these men that were standing there what they wanted to hear. He didn't do that which was appealing to their ears, but he preached the Scripture. He got the canon that he had available to him that time, and he began to preach, and he began to share Scripture. And that's our mission. That's our calling.
Dear believer, that ought to be central in our life as we seek out God's will, as we seek to witness and serve, not to tell men what they want to hear, but to tell men what they need to hear.
Not only did he speak from the canon, but inevitably then, secondly, we see that he spoke of Christ, because that's what will happen when you speak of Scripture. Look at verse 21. And it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Verse number 38, again, all part of Peter's sermon. Then Peter said, unto them, repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Peter began to preach Jesus Christ. Under the infilling of God the Holy Spirit, enabling and equipping him to preach, he took Christ and he exalted him, and he shared the Savior with those that were before him, and he told them that Christ was the only way of salvation.
If we assemble ourselves together to worship, if we're willing to be molded and shaped by Him through His Word, if we dedicate ourselves to prayer, then not only will we have a desire to speak boldly and fearlessly as these disciples did, but we will be equipped by God to do so. We will have a longing to do nothing else but to speak of Christ.
They were faithful in the sanctuary. They were filled with the Spirit. They were fearless in their speaking forthly, and finally, they were fruitful in their service.
What was the result of this being filled with the Holy Spirit? Well, firstly, there was conviction. Look at verse 37. Now, when they heard this, that's the crowd that was these men that were listening to the disciples preach. Now, when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart. and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
They were pricked in their heart. They weren't pricked by what words Peter used. They weren't pricked by his elaborate speaking, by the way that he worded things, by the manner in which he spoke, which no doubt was good, and the Spirit of the Lord equipped them to do that. But they were pricked in their heart. They were convicted of their sin because the Holy Spirit of God was moving.
And God, the Holy Ghost, took the word that was preached. And he took the efforts of Peter and these disciples in their sincerity, filled with the Spirit of the Lord, preaching Christ, and he used it to prick the hearts of these men, to convict them of their sin.
And dear believer, that is what we need today. We need the Spirit of God to convict men and women of their sin. through our sharing of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We cannot do it. We cannot create an anxious thought. If we ever get to the point where we think that we can challenge somebody in terms of bringing conviction about in their heart and their soul, then we might as well give up.
We cannot convict men of their sin. You know the hard-heartedness of men. You know how men are stubborn. You know what it is to be proud in sin. We cannot create an anxious thought. We cannot prick consciences. We cannot trouble the soul. We must depend on the Holy Spirit of God to take our efforts in the sharing of the gospel of Jesus Christ and use it to drive it home into the hearts and the souls of sinners.
That's what we need for the unsaved that gather in to the meetings here week by week. Those that listen online, for those that tune in to the radio broadcast, they will not be convicted by our mere efforts. They'll not be convicted by the music or the singing or by entertainment or by socialization or whatever else it might be, but they will be pricked by the Spirit of the Lord taking the Word of God as it is expounded and thrusting it into their hearts and souls and piercing them asunder.
That's what happened here in the day of Pentecost. It was not through any might of Peter. It was not through any special ability of these disciples that they had in and off themselves, but it was a moving of the Spirit of the Lord, which we need. Not only was there conviction, but there was conversion. Because souls were saved. Look at verse 41. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized, and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls convicted of their sin by the Holy Ghost, drawn to Christ, and converted to him through the blood of the Savior. That's our prayer, is it not, for the work of the Lord, for this church, for the people that each one of us are called to witness to, that souls would be saved.
It's an outworking of revival in the hearts of God's people as God works in our hearts, as He moves in our souls. As we meet with Him, as we pray to Him, as we have a renewed zeal and love for the things of God, an outworking will be that God will build His church. Souls will be saved.
Not only conviction and conversion, but we see here thirdly a continuing, verse 42, and they continued, steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in the breaking of bread and prayers. And as we go down through the remainder of these verses, we see this continuing in the things of God. These were not false professions of faith. These were souls saved. and who continued in fellowship. They continued worshiping the God that saved them, and that is what we need today. We don't need false professions just for numbers' sake. We want men, women, and young people who are truly born again by the Spirit of God.
We hear of so many so-called revival meetings and revival movements in this day and in this age, and there's all the hype And it may even begin to get some media coverage, and things are said, and things happen, and people start jumping on the bandwagon. And yet, before too long, it all fizzles out into nothing. And those that were apparent converts of these so-called movement, they go back into the world, they stop attending church, and there's no fruit of genuine conversion. And much of it has just been manufactured. just through emotional manipulation. And we need to be so careful when we read and see of things that are taking place, because what we need is a move of the Spirit of God, genuine God-sent, heaven-sent revival, where souls are converted and continue steadfastly in the things of the Lord. There's true fruit and a true outworking of what has taken place.
Is that your desire this morning, dear believer? Do you desire the Lord to revive your heart and your soul? Do you desire the Lord to revive His work, His church, to come to breathe upon us, to move in a way that is far beyond any means that we have in and of ourselves? Because ultimately, this is the answer, and we need to be praying to that end. We need to be seeking the Lord's face. We need to be pleading with Him to move. But here are things that we must seek to put into place, things that must be evident with the help of the Lord in our lives. We must be faithful in the sanctuary. We must be filled with the Spirit of God. We must be fearless in our speaking for Christ and fruitful in our service for Him. Let us seek to live as we ought. Let us pray down the blessing of the Lord upon our hearts and upon our souls. Let us dedicate ourselves to the cause of Jesus Christ and pray and plead that as God has moved in days gone by, as he has done in other places, that the Lord would come here pouring out his Spirit upon us, moving in a way that is far beyond our human ability. and the precious souls would be saved. God's saints edified, and his church built up for his glory.
Let us come before the Lord in prayer. Heavenly Father, we thank Thee for Thy word to our hearts. We thank Thee for this account recorded for us in Thy truth. And O God, we do rejoice that the same Spirit of God that moved and descended upon these men In Acts chapter 2, he is the same Spirit of the Lord that thou hast promised to us today.
Thank thee, O God, that he possesses the same power, that he has the same desire to see thy work built, to see souls saved, to see thy saints sanctified, edified. And therefore, O God, we pray that you will rebuke our unbelief. Pray, O God, that we would not focus on man-made efforts, notions, but, O God, that in all that we do and we realize that we have a responsibility and there is a work for us that Thou has given us to do, but, Father, in all of it, we pray that we would be seeking the descending of the Spirit of the Lord upon us.
We pray, O God, that You will breathe upon us afresh. You will revive our hearts. You will take away the coldness. Take away the look, warmness. God, we pray that you'll give us a renewed zeal. Give us that unction from heaven. Give us that desire to be at the place of prayer. Give us that urgency in seeking thy face. Give us that desire to be found in thy house, in thy praise, and in thy worship. Give us that zeal to labor for thee, to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, to open up the scriptures of truth with those that you put across our path.
Father, we pray that in and through these weak, feeble, stumbling efforts of us as Thy children, Thy great power and majesty would be displayed in the moving of thy spirit, and you would save precious souls. You will build thy church. The gates of hell will not prevail against it. Come and revive our hearts. That is our cry. That is our plea. Come and move amongst us, we pray, and we'll give thee all the praise and all the glory.
Part us now with thy blessing. Take us to your homes in safety. Gather us again back this evening in thy house. Prepare our hearts. Ready us. I pray that you'll prepare the ground once again for the sending forth of thy precious truth. Hear and answer us now then, we pray. Be with us this afternoon, we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.
