So let's open our Bibles in Romans chapter 5. And this morning we will be focusing our attention from verses 6 through 11. In this portion of God's Word, we will find four powerful truths about the Gospel. These verses summarize what the Gospel is. They also reveal the profound love of God. and the magnitude of his grace.
So as we focus ourselves in the study of these verses, I want to invite you to pray before we begin. Father, we want to thank you for the privilege that is being given to us to study your Word. We have already sung, we prayed, we brought ourselves together so that we can study your Word. We want to ask you Lord to give us hearts that are willing to obey. Please remove any resistance that stands between your word and our hearts. For it is in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that we ask these things. Amen.
There is a great dominant truth in these verses. There we will found three elements that save the sinners. Let me repeat that. Three mighty elements of the gospel that save the sinners. So that we may rejoice in our salvation.
I want us to pay attention to verse 6. Paul says, while we were still helpless at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. Paul says that Christ died for the ungodly. This is a truth that most of us know. That Christ died for sinners. But I want us to focus our attention in the condition of those sinners.
Notice how the verse reads. For while we were still helpless, the word helpless describes the condition of those sinners that Christ saves. According to this verse, We were spiritually weak. We were unable to save ourselves because the meaning of this word, the word helpless, It means powerless. It means that we have no power in ourselves to save ourselves. So it is very important to understand the meaning of this word. Because this word describes the state, the condition of every human being.
So it is important to understand that the meaning of this word is it means to be sick. To be sick, to be powerless. So there is no hope for us to save ourselves. If a person must be saved, he or she needs to know that they cannot save themselves. Because if there is no understanding in the mind of a person, They will try to do things to save themselves. See, this is the basis of every religion in the world. What can I do to save myself? But the gospel tells us That we are helpless. We are weak. We are without strength. We are powerless.
So in the context of the Gospel, this is a reference to our spiritual condition. Meaning that we are in a state of total inability to save ourselves. So Paul says, while we were still helpless, now notice the next phrase. At the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. This phrase, at the right time, it is full of meaning. It speaks on the time of God. It is not speaking on chronos time, the time of men. It is speaking that on the time of God, God sent his son. So in the perfect time, God sent his son to die for sinners.
Now, notice the rest of the verse. Christ died for the ungodly. We understand that every human being is ungodly. Everyone is a sinner. And Paul already clarified that in the context in chapter 3. You may remember that chapter 3 verse 10 says, as it is written, there is none righteous, not even one. So this is the condition of human beings. We are all helpless. But at the right time, Christ died for us, the ungodly.
Notice what Paul himself says in the book of Colossians, in chapter 2, verse 13. And you being dead in sins and in the in circumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him for forgiving you all your sins, annulling the act of the decrees that was against us, which was contrary to us, and taking it out of the way and nailing it in the cross.
Also in the book of Tyrus chapter 3 verses 3 and 5 Paul says, for we also were once foolish, rebellious, misguided, a slave of various lusts and pleasures, living in the malice and envy of hateful and offering ourselves to one another, But when the goodness of God our Savior was manifested in His love toward men, He saved us, not by works of righteousness that we had done, but by His mercy, by the washing of regeneration, and by the renewing of the Holy Spirit.
Now I want you to focus your attention in the means of our salvation. Paul says, he saved us. First of all, not by works of righteousness that we have done. Remember that Paul says that we were helpless. And then he says, but by his mercy, by the washing of regeneration and by the renewal of the Holy Spirit,
Are you reading any verse number 5? I was reading verses 4 and 5. Now going back to Romans chapter 5, notice again in verse 6, for while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Here we found a great principle from which we can get a magnificent application. And the principle is that the gospel of Jesus Christ is a powerful gospel that saves helpless people.
Therefore, we must trust Christ for the forgiveness of our sins and the eternal life. So this morning, if you are in Christ, glorify him. If you haven't repented of your sins, trust in him because he is a powerful savior and you are a hopeless sinner.
Now let's go to the first great truth of the gospel. Notice what Paul says in verses 7 through 8. For one will hardly die for the righteous man, though perhaps for the good man someone will dare even to die. But God demonstrated his own love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
In these verses, we found what is called the profound doctrine of substitutionary atonement. It means that Christ died a substitutory death in the cross. He did not die for himself. He died for others. He took our place in the cross. And Christ's sacrificial death on the cross was not for righteous people. It was for helpless people who deserve to die.
So we need to understand that his sustitutory death in the cross He took all the punishment that we deserve. And for that reason, this is a very potent element of the gospel. It is a very powerful element of the gospel.
When in verses, but God demonstrate his own love to us in that we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. In the book of Isaiah 53 verse 6, it says, We all went straight like sheep. Each one went his own way, but the Lord laid upon him the iniquity of us all.
So as we can see the prophet Isaiah explains that the future Messiah, the Messiah that will come, who will die not for himself, but for the sake of others. In 1 Peter chapter 3, in verse 18, it says, For Christ also suffered for sin once, that wretched for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made us alive in the Spirit.
In this verse, dear brothers, we found God's love. It is called a selfless love. And there he demonstrated his love toward us. There is another principle that we can get from this verse, verse 8. And the principle is that God is merciful to sinners by showing his love in Jesus Christ. So, this principle should move sinners to trust in God. To receive the love of God that is through Christ Jesus.
See, the death of Christ in the cross is the greatest of all benefits we can receive from God. We know that all things come from God. When we get up in the morning and we have good health, we say, thank you, God, for my health. When everything goes smooth in our lives, we say, thank you, God, for all your blessings. But the greatest of all blessings is the one that we receive through Jesus Christ. in his substitutionary death in the cross. Just think about for a moment. What good is it to live a life of 90 years Where there are no problems, no sickness, everything you have is in abundance. But at the end of your life, you lost your soul, and you spend eternity in hell. This is why I want to argue that the greatest of all blessings
So now let's go to the second great truth of the powerful gospel. This truth is the truth of justification. that is found in verse 9. Notice what verse 9 says. Much more than having now been justified by his blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through him. We have been studying the doctrine of justification for a long time. And by now, you need to know the definition of justification. You probably may remember that justification is a legal term. That means that we have been declared righteous before God. And this is possible through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. And when we speak of the blood of Jesus, we meant to say through his life, by dying on the cross of Calvary. And at the moment when you place your faith in Jesus Christ, notice the words of Paul in verse 9. Much more than having now been justified. When someone places their faith in Jesus Christ, At that precise moment, that person is being justified. Because it is through faith, not by words. Notice what it says in the context in chapter 5 verse 1. Therefore being justified by faith. So justification is by faith in Jesus Christ. So it is important to know and to understand that justification is not based on our works. But only in the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ in our behalf.
In the context in chapter 3 verse 24 to 26. Let's read what it says. Being justified as a gift by his grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus. Chapter 3 verse 24. Now verse 25. Whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in his blood through faith. This was to demonstrate his righteousness because in the forbearance of God he passed over the sins previously committed. Now in verse 26, for the demonstration I say of his righteousness at the present time so that he will be just and a justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Notice there that the only element that is required to be justified is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. So the principle that we found in chapter 5 verse 9 It is the following. Justification by faith in Jesus Christ is the guarantee that I am right with God. How should I respond to that great truth? Our response must be that my trust is in Christ alone and no one else.
Now let's look at the third element of the powerful gospel. In verses 10-11, chapter 5, verse 10-11. For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his son, much more having been reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
So, the third powerful element of the gospel is reconciliation. The word reconciliation mean the restoration of a broken friendship or relationship. What sin does is to separate us from God and from others. And therefore, when we are separated, we are in enmity against each other. And there is the need for reconciliation.
So, through the death of Jesus Christ in the cross, And through his resurrection, we are reconciled to God. So this doctrine brings to us a great assurance. The doctrine of reconciliation assures to us that we are in a correct relationship with God.
Listen to the words of the Apostle Paul in 2nd Corinthians chapter 5 verse 18 through 21. And all of this comes from God who reconciles to himself through Jesus Christ and gives us the ministry of reconciliation that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself not counting men's sins against them and he entrusts to us the work of reconciliation. So we are ambassadors in Christ's name, as if God were praying through us. We beseech... Sorry, I misread the word. requesting through us we beseech you in the name of Christ be reconciled to God. He made him who knew no sin to be seen for us that so that we may become the righteousness of God in him.
18 to 21, right? Yes. 18 to 21. As we can see. As we can see, the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, it is a powerful gospel that reconcile men with God. So the principle we found in this portion of God's Word is that reconciliation with God through faith in Jesus Christ It is the warranty of our salvation. So therefore we should trust in Christ alone and no one else.
So as we can see in these verses from 6 through 11 So we found three powerful elements of the Gospel that save us through faith in Jesus Christ. So I want to mention three practical applications of these verses.
First of all, each and every one of us here this morning must acknowledge that we are helpless in ourselves to save ourselves. Therefore, we need to acknowledge the need of a savior. We are spiritually weak. We don't have any ability in ourselves. Therefore, we must go to Christ. And we need to acknowledge his strength and power to save weak sinners.
The second application is that we need to rest on the security of justification. And I use the word rest Purposely, yeah. Because for some reasons, for some sinful reason, even though when we are right with God, When we sin against him, we tend to think that we must do certain things in order to be right in the right fellowship with God again. But the doctrine of justification helps us to live with confidence. Knowing that we have been justified once for all through Christ, through faith in Christ. Our sins have been forgiven. And we have been declared right with God.
So the third truth, application. is that we need to rejoice with God in our justification. Reconciliation. So have you ever noticed that when you reconcile with that someone where there had been some previously enmity against each other, you rejoice? You feel happy because there is no more enmity against each other. Now you are in a good relationship. You can sit together. You can have conversations. You can eat together because that relation has been restored. And as a result of that, there is joy. So, in the same way, Our relationship with God was restored. We are reconciled through Jesus Christ. So therefore we need to let this reconciliation transform also our relationship with others. We need to learn to extend the grace and forgiveness that God through Christ has extended to us. So that we can rejoice in this doctrine of reconciliation.
See, the church in today's day lacks of meditation on God's Word. We tend to learn great doctrines of the Bible. We tend to learn how to defend them. We have the inclination to communicate the doctrines to others. But the church of our day lacks in rejoicing in the doctrines of God. We value them as head knowledge, but not as something that we can live with joy with it.
When was the last time you sit before the presence of God in prayer? And said, Father, I thank you for the reconciliation you give me with you through Jesus Christ. The more I think about it, this is amazing. I, myself, will not be able never to reconcile with you. Apart from Christ, there is no need of being reconciled with God. There is no feelings, no emotions or the need to be reconciled with God.
So I want to invite you, dear brothers, To learn to meditate in these great doctrines. As we have learned these three powerful elements of the gospel. Christ died a substitutory death. Christ justifies through faith in him. And God has reconciled to himself through Christ. So there are these three applications in which we are to meditate this moment.
So in summary or in conclusion of these verses, we need to learn and to understand First of all, the depth of God's love. The profound God's love. The depth of God's love, yeah. And also the riches of His grace. And above all we need to understand that we are not able, we are not, we don't have any power in ourselves to save ourselves.
So as we conclude with this Bible study, if you are in Christ, you ought to have the necessity to tell others about Christ. Tell others that Christ died for their sins. Tell others that the only way to be right with God is through faith in Jesus Christ. Tell others that they are in enmity with Christ. And only through Christ they can be reconciled.
So let's pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the profound truths we found in these verses. We are deeply grateful for your great love toward us. We want to ask you, Lord, to help us to rejoice in these doctrines. We also want to ask you, Lord, to strengthen us to be ambassadors, people who preach the gospel to others. Help us to be preachers of the gospel of reconciliation. Help us to tell others how they can be reconciled with you. It is in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that we pray these things. Amen.
May the Lord bless you.
