told me where it's at, and I don't remember where he told me. So
it is called the Chronological Order of the Christmas Story.

tonight to Revelation chapter 20. Revelation chapter 20, and we'll read verses 11 through
15. John said, And I saw a great
white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth
and the heaven fled away, and there was found no place for
them. And I saw the dead, small and
great, stand before God. And the books were opened, and
another book was opened, which is the book of life. and the
dead were judged out of those things which were written in
the books according to their works. And the sea gave up the
dead which were in it, and death and hell delivered up the dead
which were in them, and they were judged every man according
to his works. And death and hell were cast
into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And
whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast
into the lake of fire. And so we'll look at this passage
tonight as I speak for a bit tonight on the subject, the final
judgment of the unsaved. now father uh... please help
tonight as we look at this on passage from your bible uh... lord operate that you'll help
me by the power of the holy spirit to preach it in the way that
it should be preached. And I pray for anyone who may
be with us who has never received the Lord Jesus as their personal
Savior, that you'll draw them to Jesus tonight, help them to
come to Him and trust Him. and then i pray that you'll uh...
uh... be glorified and that your you'll
uh... uplift your people and bless
them through the word of god help me please i pray in jesus
name Our text passage tonight could
very well be the single most serious, most solemn, most sobering,
scariest passage found anywhere in the pages of the Bible. It's
solemn and sobering just to read it. But what makes it even more
so is the fact that if there is anyone here tonight who is
unsaved, you've never received the Lord Jesus Christ as your
personal Savior, and you die in the condition that you're
in now without Jesus Christ, then you, my dear friend, will
be standing before God at this judgment spoken of right here
that we just read about, along with every other poor lost sinner
who died without Jesus Christ as Savior. Now, the time when
this judgment will take place is at the very end of Christ's
1,000 year millennial kingdom after the final rebellion, after
Satan has already been cast into the eternal lake of fire. which
we were told of in Revelation chapter 20 and verse 10, immediately
preceding our passage tonight. Now, it's vitally important that
we understand a couple of things about the matter of judgment
and salvation. Number one, no judgment will
ever determine a person's salvation. I said no judgment will ever
determine a person's salvation. Many people have the erroneous
idea that one day there will be a judgment where it will be
decided whether they go to heaven or whether they go to hell. This
is not the case. Heaven and hell will not be determined
at some judgment somewhere out in the future. Heaven and hell
is determined in this life based on whether the individual receives
Jesus Christ as personal savior or whether they didn't. And those
who do are going to heaven, those who don't are going to hell.
Jesus said in John chapter 3 in verse 18, he that believeth on
him, that is on the Son of God, is not condemned. Now I believe
on the Son of God, that means I'm not condemned. If you believed
on the Son of God, you're not condemned. But then he went on
and said, but he that believeth not is condemned already, not
waiting to be condemned at a judgment, but condemned already, because
he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. if you have not trusted Jesus
Christ as your personal Savior, dear friend, the sentence has
already been passed, the wages of sin is death, and you're living
with the sentence of condemnation already hanging over your head,
and the only way that you can have that sentence revoked is
to trust Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and you have
to do that in this lifetime. So that's the first thing that
we need to understand. No judgment will ever determine
a person's salvation. Secondly, there are several different
judgments which are spoken of in the Bible and we've talked
about Well, all of these except the one that we're dealing with
tonight. But first, there is what the
Bible refers to as the judgment seed of Christ, the Bema. That's
a judgment where Christians of this New Testament age will stand
before Christ to be judged, hear me, for rewards in heaven on
the basis of how they live their Christian life from the time
that they got saved until the time that they went to be with
the Lord. This judgment will take place
in heaven immediately following the first phase of Christ's second
coming, the rapture. And then there's the judgment
of the living Jews at the conclusion of the tribulation period at
the second phase of Christ's second coming, his revelation. The Jews who survive the tribulation
period will stand before their Messiah, Jesus Christ. The rebels will be purged out
and those who submit to Jesus as their Messiah will enter his
1,000-year millennial kingdom, and that's when all Israel shall
be saved, Romans 11, 26. And then there's the judgment
of the living Gentiles at the conclusion of the tribulation
period at the second phase of Christ's second coming, the Revelation,
The Gentiles, the non-Jews who survived the Tribulation period
will stand before Christ. Those who had trusted Him and
gotten saved during the Tribulation and had demonstrated their salvation
by ministering to the persecuted Jewish people will enter Christ's
1,000-year millennial kingdom. Those who had rejected Christ
and had not gotten saved during the tribulation and had demonstrated
their lack of salvation by not ministering to the persecuted
Jewish people will be sent to hell. And then there's the judgment
of the angels, that is the fallen angels, the demons. Now we're
given practically no information about this judgment in the Bible,
but 1 Corinthians chapter six and verse three does indicate
that God's New Testament church will have some role to play in
it, though we don't know what that role will be. And then,
The very final of the judgments is the one that we're talking
about this evening, which will occur at the very end of time,
just after Christ's millennial kingdom and the final rebellion
of Satan and his followers, just before the eternal state is brought
into being. This final judgment is often
called the Great White Throne Judgment because of what verse
11 says about it. Due to the fact that every unsaved
person of all time will stand before God for judgment at this
judgment, I refer to it in the words of the title of our study
tonight as the final judgment of the unsaved. Now, the prophet
Daniel peered through the telescope of prophecy and caught a glimpse
of this judgment in the far off future. And this is what Daniel
said about it in Daniel chapter seven, verses nine and 10. Daniel chapter 7 verses 9 and
10, Daniel said, I beheld till the thrones were cast down and
the ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow
and the hair of his head like the pure wool. His throne was
like the fiery flame and his his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came
forth from before him. Thousand thousands ministered
unto him and 10,000 times 10,000 stood before him. The judgment
was set and the books were opened. So Daniel saw this judgment way
back in his day. But then you turn to Revelation
20, just to read the words of John's account of this judgment
is to be struck with the fearfulness and solemnity and awfulness of
it. And I saw a great white throne,
and him that sat on it from whose face the earth and the heaven
fled away, and there was found no place for them. I saw the
dead, small and great, stand before God, and the books were
opened. That's what Daniel said, wasn't
it? And the books were opened, and another book was opened,
which is the book of life. And the dead were judged out
of those things which were written in the books according to their
works. and the sea gave up the dead
which were in it. and death and hell delivered
up the dead which were in them, and they were judged every man
according to their works. And death and hell were cast
into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And
whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast
into the lake of fire. So I want us to notice this evening
three things. First, the judge. Second, the
judged. third, the judgment. And so,
first of all, the judge, verse 11. John said, and I saw a great
white throne and him that sat on it from whose face the earth
and the heaven fled away and there was found no place for
them. This verse simply refers to the
judge as him that sat on the great white throne. It's very
obvious that is talking about God. But I want you to notice
specifically which person of the triune Godhead this is that
sits on the great white throne of judgment. Now Paul spoke of
it in his sermon to the philosophers at Areopagus, Mars Hill, in Athens
in Acts chapter 17. Acts chapter 17, and verse 31, Paul said to these
philosophers, because he, that is God, hath appointed a day
in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that
man whom he hath ordained, whereof he hath given assurance unto
all men, and that he hath raised him from the dead, and so then,
God will judge, it said, by that man whom he hath ordained, and
in case you don't get who that is out of that, he goes on and
tells us, well, it's the one that God raised from the dead,
the Lord Jesus Christ. Back in the Gospel of John, chapter
five, The Lord Jesus is speaking in this passage, John chapter
5. And verse number 22, Jesus said,
for the father judges no man, but hath committed all judgment
unto the son. And so then the person of the
Godhead who will sit on this great white throne of judgment
is the Lord Jesus Christ. Now the throne on which he sits
for this judgment is described as a great white throne, emphasizing
and stressing the absolute undiluted righteousness and holiness of
this throne and the one who's sitting thereon. Now, in describing
the throne of the Lord seen by God's New Testament church at
the rapture, back in Revelation chapter 4 and verse 3, that throne
was surrounded by a rainbow. Now, the rainbow, though the
queers have co-opted it, attached it to their perversion. The rainbow
in the Bible is the symbol of God's faithfulness to keep his
promises of mercy instituted when he promised Noah that he
wouldn't destroy the world anymore with waters of a flood. God's saints behold his throne
as a throne of mercy and grace. That's why it's surrounded by
that rainbow. But when we come to the throne
of judgment for the unsaved in Revelation chapter 20 and verse
11, the day of mercy and grace is over and done with. Those
who stand before Christ now at this judgment are people who
have rejected his mercy and his grace and his salvation. Thus
they stand before his throne of perfect, unadulterated, undiluted,
absolute righteousness and holiness, symbolized by the dazzling, blazing
glow of whiteness. A great white throne, he said. Now, as the Lord Jesus sits on
this great white throne of judgment, the passage declares that from
his face the earth and the heaven fled away and there was found
no place for them. And we'll see more about that
another time. But an interesting study is to
study the face of Jesus. If you do a study of that, you'll
see his face as a set face, Luke 9, 51, fulfilling Isaiah 50 in
verse 7. You'll see his face as a shamed
face, Matthew 26, 67, fulfilling Isaiah 50 in verse 6. You'll see His face as a stricken
face, Luke 22, 64. You'll see His face as a shining
face, Matthew 17, verse 2, 2 Corinthians 4, verse 6. You'll see His face
as a seen face, Revelation 22, 4. But here at this judgment,
we see His face as a scorching face. the very earth and heaven
flee from his face to be replaced by a new heaven and a new earth. And so then, the judge is the
Lord Jesus Christ. Secondly, the judged, verses
12 and 13, and I saw the dead, small and great, stand before
God, and the books were opened, Notice that the books, plural,
were opened, and another book, singular, was opened, which is
the book of life, and the dead were judged out of those things
which were written in the books, plural. according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead
which were in it, and death and hell delivered up the dead which
were in them, and they were judged every man according to their
works." The judged. Four times in these two verses
that we just read, the word dead, is used in telling us who they
are, which will be judged at this judgment. Now understand
that by this time, the only ones who are still dead are the unsaved,
the lost who rejected Christ. All of God's people were already
resurrected before this. And remember that all the unsaved
are dead at this time. The last of the unsaved having
died up in verse nine. Remember when they rebelled and
Satan led that final rebellion and the Lord sent fire down and
destroyed the crowd that the devil gathered there? That's
where the last unsaved people died. Only the unsaved are judged
at this judgment. But all the unsaved are judged
at this judgment. Verse 12 declares the dead, small
and great, are judged. Heads of corporations will stand
side by side with beggars and bums. Leaders of industry will
stand side by side with hobos. heads of state will stand side
by side with homeless people. Small and great. The question naturally arises,
where will God's people, the saved people, be while this judgment
takes place? Okay, now, listen to me. I believe
that the saved, you and me and all the other saved, will be
there not to be judged, but to act as witnesses. Look back to
Matthew chapter 12. Notice what Jesus said in this
passage, Matthew chapter 12, verses 41 and 42. Jesus says
to the Pharisees here, The men of Nineveh shall rise
in judgment with this generation. I did tell you I'm in verse 41,
did I not? Okay, the men of Nineveh shall
rise in judgment with this generation and shall condemn it because
they repented at the preaching of Jonas and behold, a greater
than Jonas is here. The queen of the south, that's
the queen of Sheba. shall rise up in the judgment
with this generation and she'll condemn it for she came from
the other most parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of solomon
and behold a greater than solomon is here uh... you see uh... what
jesus said here it'll be more tolerable for some that it will
be for others at this judgment that we're talking about if you are not so and don't get
saved before you die and you die without Christ, you will
be judged at this judgment. Let's go on then thirdly. I call
your attention to the judgment. We've seen the judge is the Lord
Jesus Christ. The judged are all the unsaved
of all the ages. Now the judgment. Verse 12, we'll
read through the end of the chapter again. And I saw the dead, small
and great, stand before God, and the books were opened. And
another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the
dead were judged out of those things which were written in
the books according to their works. And the sea gave up the
dead which were in it, and death and hell delivered up the dead
which were in them, and they were judged every man according
to their works. And death and hell were cast
into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And
whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast
into the lake of fire. Now, four things concerning this
judgment of the unsaved. First, the resurrection for this
judgment. Notice verse 13, and the sea
gave up the dead which were in it, and death and hell delivered
up the dead which were in them. the resurrection for this judgment. Now, in previous studies, we
saw that there are two resurrections, one for God's people, one for
those that are not God's people. Paul referred to it as the resurrection
of the dead, both of the just, that's God's people, and the
unjust, that's not the Lord's people. The first resurrection,
God's people, occurred in three phases, likened to phases of
a harvest in Old Testament Israel. The first fruits, 1 Corinthians
15, 20, that's Christ's resurrection. Now is Christ risen and become
the first fruits of them that slept? Then the second phase,
the main harvest, New Testament church, which will go out at
the rapture. And then the third phase is the
gleanings, that's the tribulation saints at the end of the tribulation. And if I am correct in the way
I understand the Bible, The Old Testament saints will be raised
along with the tribulation saints at the conclusion of the tribulation. But here in Revelation chapter
20 verse 13, we have the second resurrection, those who are not
God's people. all the lost of all the ages,
all those who rejected God and the salvation that he provided
through his son, Jesus Christ. It said, the sea gave up the
dead which were in it. The sea, all those who died in
Noah's flood, uh... all those who died in the red
so you want children of israel crossed out all the shipwrecks
throughout all the centuries and millennia of man's existence
the sea gives up its dead, along with those who were buried in
graves, the bodies are raised, and hell gives up the souls to
be reunited with the bodies which were raised, and so body and
soul stands before the great white throne of Jesus Christ
to be judged. Secondly, the records at this
judgment. Verse 12 said, the books were
opened. Then it says, after another phrase,
the dead were judged out of those things which were written in
the books according to their works. Verse 13 says, they were
judged every man according to their works. And so the records
of this judgment are kept by God himself. And God is a perfect
bookkeeper. He's keeping record of the works
of every unsaved person. What's included in these records
of works? Well, let me show you four things.
Number one, secret things. Ecclesiastes chapter 12. Ecclesiastes chapter 12 and verse
14, for God shall bring every work into judgment with every
secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil. Every
secret thing shall be judged. That'd be enough to make me want
to get saved right there if I wasn't saved. I mean, you know, everything
you've ever thought about, and I'm not talking to Christians,
but lost people, every thought you've ever had, everything you've
ever done and said that you think's covered up in the sands of time,
God's got it written in His book. In the same vein, notice Romans
chapter two. Romans chapter two and verse
16. in the day when God shall judge
the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. The secret
things. And so then, that's included
in the records of unsaved people's works. Number two, words. Matthew chapter 12. And verse 36, Jesus said, but
I say unto you that every idle word that men shall speak, they
shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. That'd be
a blessing, wouldn't it? Every idle word. have you ever spoken and i were
don't don't don't don't so you don't don't love about it and
so i know that's an idle word if you do thirdly motives first
corinthians chapter four secret things words then motives
First Corinthians chapter four, verse five. Therefore judge nothing
before the time until the Lord come who both will bring to light
the hidden things of darkness. There's those secret things again.
And will make manifest the counsels of the hearts and then shall
every man have praise of God. The counsels of the hearts, that
means the purposes, the motives of the heart. And then fourthly, the judgment
will be on the basis of opportunities. Matthew chapter 11. Matthew chapter 11, verses 20
through 24. Then began He, Jesus, to upbraid
the cities wherein most of His mighty works were done, because
they repented not. So Jesus now is gonna preach
a bit to the cities where He performed most of His miracles
because they wouldn't repent. I mean, here's the Son of God
performing miracles in front of them, healing people and all
things that He did, but they wouldn't repent. And here's what
he said to them, verse 21. Woe unto thee, Corazon! Woe unto
thee, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which
were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would
have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say unto you,
it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of
judgment than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art
exalted unto heaven, shall be brought down to hell. For if
the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in
Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto
you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the
day of judgment than for thee. So Jesus said it was gonna be
more tolerable for the Old Testament cities of Tyre and Sidon that
he destroyed then the judgment would be for Bethsaida and Chorazin,
two of the cities where Jesus did a lot of his miracles. Then he said that it would be
more tolerable for Sodom than for Capernaum, which was
Jesus' headquarters. Now why is this? Because Tyre and Sidon did not
have the opportunity that these cities Bethsaida and Chorazin
had. Sodom did not have the opportunity
that the city of Capernaum. Jesus was not there in Tyre and
Sidon. He wasn't in Sodom to perform
miracles. So yes, these cities were destroyed,
but their opportunity was less than these cities that Jesus
preached in and worked miracles in. So therefore, Jesus said
it would be more tolerable at the judgment for these Old Testament
cities that were destroyed by God than for these cities that
Jesus preached in that still refuse to repent. So these works will be compared
to the Bible. Notice John chapter 12. John chapter 12. verse 48, Jesus said, he that
rejecteth me and receiveth not my words hath one that judgeth
him the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the
last day. So, he'll take the Bible and
compare these works on the record books of unsaved people to what
the Bible says. Well, what about people who didn't
have a Bible or didn't know about Christ? Well, Romans 2, 12 through
15 points out that everybody, whether they have the Bible or
not, has a conscience. There's something inside of man
that tells him there's a God. Somebody's greater. The only
way to keep people from thinking that way is to send them to the
university so that the communist professors can educate it out
of them. I'm as serious as I can be. Let me go on thirdly and say
a word about the registry at this judgment. Verse 12, after
telling us that the books were opened, then goes on and says,
and another book was opened, which is the book of life. This
is the registry of the names of all who trusted Christ and
got saved. My name's in that book. If you're saved, your name's
in that book. And so, you see, when we trusted
Christ and got saved, our evil works were put under the blood. So we don't stand before God
to be judged at this judgment. Our sins were judged at the cross. Fourthly, the results of this
judgment, verses 14 and 15. And death and hell were cast
into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And
whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast
into the lake of fire. So, death and hell, body and
soul, of all these unsaved people who never got saved, never trusted
Christ, thus their names were not registered in the book of
life. They're cast into the lake of
fire into which the devil had been cast up in verse 10, into
which the Antichrist and his false prophet had been cast in
Revelation 19 and verse 20. Now every unsaved person who
has lived throughout all the ages and never trusted Christ
and died without him stand in judgment before him. Now he is not the savior calling
them to repentance, calling them to rest. Now he's the judge sitting
on the great white throne. The songwriter penned it this
way. I dreamed that the great judgment
morning had dawned and the trumpet had blown. I dreamed that the
nations had gathered to judgment before the white throne. From
the throne came a bright shining angel and stood on the land and
the sea and swore with his hand raised to heaven that time was
no longer to be. The rich man was there, but his
money had melted and vanished away. A pauper he stood in the
judgment, his debts were too heavy to pay. The great man was
there, but his greatness, when death came, was left far behind. The angel that opened the records,
not a trace of his greatness could find. The widow was there
with the orphans. God heard and remembered their
cries. No sorrow in heaven forever. God wiped all the tears from
their eyes. The gambler was there, and the
drunkard, and the man who had sold them the drink. with the
people who gave him the license. Together, in hell, they did sink. The moral man came to the judgment,
but his self-righteous rags would not do. The men who had crucified
Jesus had passed off as moral men, too. The soul that had put
off salvation. Not tonight, I'll get saved by
and by. No time now to think of religion. but at last they had found time
to die. And oh, what a weeping and wailing
as the lost were told of their fate. They cried for the rocks
and the mountains. They prayed, but their prayer
was too late. In that day, it'll be too late
to pray, right now for whosoever shall call upon the name of the
Lord shall be saved. If you call upon the Lord understanding
that Jesus died for your sins and rose again and is in the
business of saving sinners and you come to him as a sinner that
needs to be saved and call upon him, ask him for his salvation,
he'll save you. Whosoever shall call upon the
name of the Lord shall be saved. But I notice In Revelation 20
and verse 15, there's another whosoever. And whosoever was
not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake
of fire. By then, the whosoever shall
call upon the name of the Lord, that's in the past. Now it's
whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast
into the lake of fire. Now my dear friend, if you cannot
go back in your mind to a point in your life when you called
upon Christ for salvation, trusted him, put your soul in his hands
and trusted him as your only hope for heaven, my prayer for
you is that you'll come to him tonight and receive him and be
saved. So you won't have to stand at
this judgment.
