Hello again and welcome to the program in Philippians chapter 4 and verse number 7. We are promised a peace that passes understanding even during the trials. How can this peace be mine? We're going to look at it.
I'm reading Philippians chapter four, verse number six through eight. We read in verse six, be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God and the peace of God, which passes all understanding. shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on these things.
So the first thing we see here, he says, be careful for nothing. Verse six, I can remember my mother telling me to be careful all the time. Watch the car, be careful, don't touch his toe, be careful. Well, the word here means to be full of care or anxiety, be anxious about nothing.
In Luke chapter 10 and verse number 41, we read, Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, Thou art careful, full of care, and troubled about many things. The word things occurs 28 times in the little short book of Philippians.
Philippians chapter 1 and verse 6 continues in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving Let your requests be made known unto God. We have two words here. One is prayer and the other one is supplication. Prayer is simply communication with God. Supplication is a humble, heartfelt plea for something specific.
For instance, James 5 and 16 says the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. In 1 Samuel chapter 1, we have the story of Hannah who wanted a child. We read in verse 10, and she was in bitterness of soul and prayed unto the Lord and wept. And she vowed a vow and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou will indeed look upon the affliction of thine handmaid and remember me and not forget thine handmaid, but will give unto thine handmaid a man-child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life.
We read in verse 20, wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bear a son, and she called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord. And so, first of all, we need to be careful or full of care about nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, Let your requests be made known unto God.
The result, verse 7, and the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. In verse number eight, Paul focuses upon thinking about things. He says, finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of a good report, If there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.
The word things is in the scriptures 1,162 times and in this little book of Philippians, the word things occurs 28 times. In chapter 1, in verse 10, we read of things that are excellent. Verse 12, the things which happened. In chapter 2, in verse 4, his own things and the things of others. Verse 10, things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth. Verse 14, do all things without murmuring. And verse 21, the things which are Jesus Christ. In chapter 1, verse 10, he refers to things that are excellent, verse 12, the things which happen. In chapter 2, verse 4, his own things and the things of others. Verse 10, things in heaven, things in earth, and things under the earth. Verse 14, do all things without murmuring. Verse 21, the things which are Jesus Christ.
In chapter three, in verse one, Paul talks about the things that he was writing to those people. In verse seven, but what things were gained to me, I counted loss for Christ. Verse eight, yea, doubtless, and I count all things. I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung that I may win Christ. In verse 13, this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before. In verse 19, those who mind earthly things. In verse 21, he that is God is able to subdue all things.
In chapter 4, verse 8, things that are true, things that are honest, things that are pure, things that are lovely, things that are of good report. Think on these things. In verse nine, those things which ye have learned. In verse 12, in all things I am instructed, Paul said. In verse 13, he said, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. And verse 18, the things that were sent.
In 1 Thessalonians 5, 18, we read in everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Notice very carefully it does not say for everything give thanks, it says in everything give thanks. Recently I was driving to the grocery store to pick up some groceries and I had a very serious migraine headache. I did not like that headache and anything to do with it. And then I thought of this verse, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Again, it doesn't say thank God for the headache, it says in everything give thanks.
As I was driving down the road I went past a hospital and I thought there's all kinds of people in there. I'm not, I'm driving along in my nice warm car I am able to drive. I am able to go to the grocery store. I am able to buy some groceries. I am able to go back to my house and have a good place to live. Some people are living on the street. No matter what we're going through, there's something we can be thankful for. Even if you have a flat tire, you can be thankful that you have a car.
How can we have the strength, even though we're going through hard times, to praise the Lord? Well, Isaiah 40, 31 pretty well sums it up. It says, They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
