Turn your Bibles to the book
of Mark, chapter 1. Mark, chapter 1. I love the Lord Jesus. It was
this time of year near the end of November, 1971, when I took
Christ as my Savior. I can remember early on, you
know, back when I'd been saved, five to 10, 15 years. And I used
to marvel at people we had in church that had been saved for
50 years. Seemed like such a long time.
It's not very long in light of eternity, by the way. Not very
long at all. But now I am one of those that's
been saved over 50 years. And so I marvel at me. The Lord is so good. I'll tell
you, that's the best Day of my life when I took Christ as Savior. Changed everything completely. Whole direction of my life, everything
completely. Thank the Lord. Well, I want
to read a short passage about a day that changed the lives
of a few people. In Mark chapter 1, beginning
in verse 16, It says, Now as he walked by the Sea of Galilee,
he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net in the sea, for
they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come
ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook
their nets and followed him. What an impact these men ended
up having on lives. As a matter of fact, their impact
goes down through the years to where all of us have been impacted
by their lives because of decisions that they made on this very day.
As a matter of fact, this passage, we find it recorded for us three
times in the scripture. It's in Luke chapter 5, and it's
in Matthew chapter 4, and also here in Mark chapter 1. But I
got to thinking about that. You know, I like to make jokes
about fishermen. And just something about it. I just never took up the rod
and reel. Just wasn't a big thing to me
because I always liked playing ball. And that was it for me. Sitting in a boat, and the only
bites I got were mosquito bites. It just didn't appeal to me at
all. My dad never did understand that, but that's all right. Everybody
just likes some different things. And I've always had the privilege
and honor a pastoring fisherman, otherwise I wouldn't have anybody
to make fun of. You know, I used to say old fishermen
never die, they just smell that way. Oh, come on. Come on. In this snowflake era,
you know, these snowflakes, they're just a little bit of heat, they
just melt. But the fishermen we have are tough. They can take
it, and believe me, they get even. Our fishermen get even. And we
got some fishermen here that like to do it. We got some hunters
here, too, for that matter. And they like to get even, although
I'd rather get hit with a fishing rod than a bullet anyway. You realize when it comes to
fishermen, there are different kinds of fishermen. In the passage
that we read, these were professional. Now, you've got the professional
fisherman, you've got the avid fisherman, you've got the occasional
fisherman. I guess the one time that I was
an occasional fisherman, my cousin and I went up to a lake over
around Burr Oak, Michigan. And I got in, I was rowing out
to where we were gonna go to, we didn't have a boat. motor,
and so I was rowing. My cousin was casting, and he
stuck me right there on top of the head, which was another reason
to not like fishing. And I couldn't get the hook out,
and only being an occasional fisherman, didn't know how to
get the hook out. I pulled and pulled. That didn't
work. And so I had to row all the way back in and then drove
to the hospital. And they cut it out and put a
stitch or two in there. But I was an occasional fisherman.
If I'd have been an avid fisherman, hey, I'd just thrown some iodine
on it and kept fishing. Come on, they're tough, aren't
they? These guys wouldn't go to the hospital over a little
hook being in their head. Anyway. And then there are those,
of course, that do it for their livelihood. But among each kind,
Whatever kind of fishing that they do, although it may vary
greatly, it also changes how they fish. Isn't that right? I mean, if they're professional
fishermen, they're gonna use nets. These people use nets.
They didn't throw out a hook to catch anything. They used
nets and they pulled them in by the boatload. There's a big
difference between crappie fishing and salmon fishing. I figure
salmon fishing, you just go out in the middle of the stream and
grab them and throw them up on the bank, something like that.
That's the way the bear does it. And they eat pretty well. But the equipment is different
for each kind of fisherman as well. And in the story that we
read, we read about fishermen who were not fishing for pleasure.
And they were not fishing necessarily for their own eating. In other
words, to just fill themselves up. It was their life. They fished
on the Sea of Galilee. Been there a couple of times
on the Sea of Galilee, and it's the one place where the Catholics
haven't built a cathedral, so that's why I like that one. And going across from Tiberias
over to Capernaum was very interesting. But to think that these people
were out on the Sea of Galilee a lot, And they had great days. They had stormy days. They had
days where they didn't catch much. As a matter of fact, you
find that in Luke chapter 5. We'll look at it in just a little
bit. But here they are. Jesus comes on the scene. They're
mending their nets. And he says to them, follow me,
and I will make you fishers of men. Now we do know there were
at least four in this business. And if we counted James and John's
father, Zebedee, he was probably in the business as well. But
these were businessmen. They had their own business. This was their livelihood. And
here's Jesus, the one who's been presented to Peter as the Messiah
by his own brother, Andrew. And he comes on the scene and
he says, follow me and I'll make you fishers of men. And they
left everything. Imagine leaving everything to
follow Jesus. You leave it all behind. You
leave everything and say, this is it. My life's going to be
something totally different from now on. All because Jesus said,
follow me. Follow me. and I'll make you
fishers of men." I guarantee you, for the most part, Christians
would much rather fight a 10-pound bass on the end of the line than
they would deal with some person who doesn't like Christians.
And yet, you can catch all the bass in the world, that doesn't
equal the value of one person, one soul. to do something that
counts for eternity, to win people to the Lord Jesus Christ. So
in the passage, Jesus tells them to follow me and tells them of
a great change that's gonna be made. They're gonna have a different
purpose in life. They're going to fish men. They
must have thought an awful lot of Jesus to do that, to leave
everything. Imagine if God called somebody
in the auditorium today to serve Jesus Christ, to go as a missionary,
maybe to Brazil, maybe to South Korea, maybe to South Africa,
maybe to Uganda. I mean, after all, we've had
so many out of our church that have gone to mission fields around
the world. That's what those pictures are
all about behind us on the wall. Madison Baptist Church members
who surrendered to the mission field and have gone to the mission
field. And we may have at least one up there that's not up there
that will be. But anyway, why would they do
that? Let me give you some reasons.
Number one, they were convinced of his person. They were convinced
of who he is. Now, we've just gone through
a political season, and have you noticed it never ends? Even
when it's over, it's not over. And it doesn't make any difference.
It doesn't make any difference. Here's a new party coming into
power. It doesn't make any difference
who they choose for any job. They're not qualified. Have you
noticed that? And the side that loses always
has to, I mean, they're losers. They lost. Why would people listen
to them for advice? They lost. Now that's winners
and losers. If you won, you won to put your
people in power. And to the other side, they didn't
think you were qualified. So why would you listen to them
about who's qualified and who isn't qualified? I'm just simply
saying that's what goes on in our nation all the time. And
whoever gets in power, the other side always thinks that, but
I'll tell you what, To have a person that you're willing to give up
everything for, you must think an awful lot of him. What is
it that makes you think of him? In this case, these people made
this decision for the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe, number one,
they were convinced of his person, who he is. He's someone special. Turn over to the book of John,
chapter 1. John, chapter 1. And I want you to notice where
some of these disciples met Jesus. As far as we know for the first
time, in verse 29 of John chapter 1, you'll notice the scripture
says, the next day, John seeth Jesus coming to him and saith,
Behold, the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world. What a marvelous statement. There's
only one Lamb of God. That's Jesus Christ. He's not
one among many. He is the only one. The Lord
Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. It says in verse 35, again, the
next day after John stood and two of his disciples, and looking
upon Jesus as he walked, he said, behold, the Lamb of God. And the two disciples heard him
speak. And they followed Jesus. Then
Jesus turned and saw them following, and said unto them, What seek
ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, which
is to say, being interpreted, Master, where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and
see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him
that day, for it was about the tenth hour. Now notice this.
And one of the two which heard John speak and followed him was
Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. Now in the passage the scripture
does not tell us who the other disciple was. We know it wasn't
Philip. He's going to talk to Philip
a little bit later. We know it wasn't Nathaniel.
He's going to deal with Nathaniel a little bit later. It doesn't
matter. For the story, the Holy Spirit lets us know that one
of the two that just left went with Jesus. You get the feeling
that maybe the other one was John, but we just don't know
that since Scripture doesn't say. But it says again in verse
40, And one of the two which heard John speak and followed
him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first findeth his
own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah. He didn't say a Messiah, we have
found the Messiah, which is being interpreted the Christ. This is the anointed one of God. This is the Son of God. This
is the only one who can take sins away. This is the only one
who can forgive sins. He is the Christ. I remind you
in John chapter 20, verses 30 and 31, the Bible says that many
other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples,
which are not written in this book, but these are written that
you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,
and that believing you might have life through his name. He is God, Isaiah 9, 6. Unto us a child is born, unto
us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and
his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the mighty God, the
everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. That is Jesus Christ. Over in John again, take a look
at chapter five. John chapter five, Jesus has
just healed the impotent man. John chapter 5 and you'll notice
in verse 17 John chapter 5. I only got to chapter 4. It says,
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
Therefore the Jews sought the Moor to kill him, because he
not only had broken the Sabbath, but said also that God was his
Father, making himself equal with God. Then answered Jesus
and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do
nothing of himself, But what he seeth the Father do, for what
thing soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. Now they wanted to kill him because
he said God was his Father making himself. They wanted to do it
for blasphemy, and that's not the last time. In John chapter
10, beginning in verse 27, Jesus said, My sheep, hear My voice.
I know them, and they follow Me, and I give unto them eternal
life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them
out of My hand. My Father which gave them Me
is greater than all, and no man's able to pluck them out of My
Father's hand. I and My Father are one. The Bible says, Then
the Jews took up stones again, Jesus answered them, many good
works have I showed you from my Father, for which of these
works do you stone me? They said, for a good work we
stone thee not, but for blasphemy, because of thou being a man,
make us thyself God. Had Jesus not been the Messiah,
had he not been the Christ, had he not been the Son of God, it
would have been blasphemy. But the truth is, it would have
been a lie and sin not to say that he is who he said he is.
He is the Christ, he is the Messiah, and here's Andrew, he meets Christ,
he's come to the realization, this is the one that our people
have always longed for, this is the one promised in the Old
Testament, And the Bible said he wanted his brother to know
about him. So he goes to his brother, we
have found the Messiah, which is being interpreted the Christ. I remember hearing Jacob Gardenhouse,
who was the founder of the International Board of Jewish Missions, when
he came to the realization that Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ. He was on the streets of New
York City. I mean on the streets of New
York City. Not that he was homeless, but
he's walking down the street, the realization comes upon him
that this Jesus has fulfilled the prophecies of God, of the
Old Testament. This Jesus is my Messiah, as
a matter of fact. Jacob Gardenhouse used to say,
don't call me a converted Jew. I'm not a converted Jew. I'm
a completed Jew. I have found the promised one.
I have found my Messiah. And so he started proclaiming
Christ right there, downtown New York. For that, a bunch of
other Jews came up and beat him up. He had to be rescued. Take that kind of a stand for
Jesus Christ back then would put your life in danger. And
yet Andrew, because of who Jesus is, he wanted his brother to
know him as well. You remember in Matthew chapter
16, Jesus asked his disciples the question, who do men say
that I the son of man am? And of course, Peter spoke up,
some say you're Elias, some say you're one of the prophets. He
said, but who do you say that I am? And Peter answers, answer
we believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living
God. And Jesus commends him for that. First, they had to know who he
was. Here, by the time we get to Mark
chapter 1 and Matthew chapter 4 and Luke chapter 5, we find
that they had come to the conclusion that this one is the Christ,
and when he comes on the scene, he says, follow me. They left
their nets, they put him down, and they followed him because
of who he was. In John chapter four, when Jesus
met the woman at the well, she said in verse 25, I know Messiah
cometh, which is called Christ, and when he has come, he will
tell us all things. And then Jesus said, I that speak
unto thee, And she left her water pots, went her way into the city,
and said to the men, come see a man that told me all things
that ever I did. Is not this the Christ? She wanted
the people of the city, now that she had come to the realization
of who he was, that he was the Christ, she wanted others to
know him as well. Yeah, that's a normal response
for those who come to the place where they recognize Jesus for
who He is. He's not just some religious
figure, not just some celebrity. He's not that at all. He's the
creator of all that is. For the Bible says, in the beginning
was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,
and the same was in the beginning with God. All things were made
by Him, and without Him was not anything made. That was made. So you see, they left because
they were convinced of who He was. Secondly, they were convinced
of His Word. You go over to Luke chapter 5.
Luke chapter 5. These are pretty smart fishermen.
Luke chapter five. After all, these weren't people
who graduated from the seminary, they were fishermen. Just fishermen. Luke chapter
five. Notice beginning of verse one,
it came to pass that as the people pressed upon him to hear the
word of God, he stood by the lake Gennesaret. and saw two
ships standing by the lake, but the fishermen were gone out of
them and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the
ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust
out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the
people out of the ship. Now, when he had left speaking,
he said unto Simon, launch out into the deep and let down your
nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto
him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing. Nevertheless, at thy word, I
will let down the net. And when they had this done,
they enclosed a great multitude of fishes and their net break. And they beckoned under their
partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and
help them. And they came and filled both
the ships, so they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell
down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful
man, O Lord. And he was astonished, and all
that were with him at the draught of the fishes which they had
taken. And so was also James and John,
the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus
said unto Simon, Fear not from henceforth, thou shalt catch
men. They were convinced of His Word.
They'd fished all night. These are professional fishermen.
They had fished all night. They had caught nothing. The
reason that they're on the shore, they're tired, they had caught
nothing. You know, some days are good
catching days and some days aren't when you're a fisherman. Someday,
you can go out there and just throw the hook in, man, you got
one. Throw it in there again. I never
understood this about fishermen. They'll come in from four hours
sitting in a boat, and all they caught was a little bigger minnow
than what they had on the hook. And they'll say, well, how'd
it go? Oh, I had a great day. Sitting on a boat for four hours,
really? I know, it's terrible for some of you who are fishermen
like that. The thought of a golfer going
out there and hitting a golf ball around a cow pasture for
four hours doesn't make any sense to you. But some of us just like
hitting something hard and not getting in trouble for it. You
understand that? Sitting there and doing nothing.
Now those golfs are hard to peel, but once you get inside, you
can get a good bite to eat right there. Thing is, they had obeyed in
the matter of fishing. Got a great drought of fishes
that had come in. They obeyed in matters that they
knew a lot about. Why would they take Jesus at
his word on this? I mean, after all, he was a son
of a carpenter. Jesus wasn't known as a fisherman. You would
think that he would have deferred to them, not the other way around,
but you understand they were convinced of his word. And from henceforth thou shalt
catch men. As he says in Matthew chapter
four, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. They could have refused. Man,
we're tired. We're not gonna do it. We can
always catch them later. I mean, if we didn't catch anything today,
those fish will still be there tomorrow. But they took him at
his word. They trusted his word about all
things. I want you to get this part,
very, very important. This book right here is God's
word. It's right about anything it says anything about. Bible declares, let God be true
and every man a liar. Jeremiah said, thy words were
found and I did eat them. And thy word was unto me, the
joy and rejoicing of my heart. Job said, I've esteemed the words
of his mouth more than my necessary food. Jesus said, man shall not
live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeded out of the
mouth of God. The psalmist said, therefore
I, therefore I, esteem well, I lost that word
right there therefore I stand all thy precepts concerning all
things to be right and I hate Every false way. What's a false
way anything that disagrees with this book? We have the inspired
inerrant and fallible word of a living God and Now, you've
heard me say this often, but this is good for anybody, especially
if we have visitors here today, this is especially good for you.
When you hear people say, well, you know, in these other translations,
they just change the words a little bit. After all, it's all about
the thoughts. No, you change the words, you
change the thoughts. Jesus didn't say that man shall
live by the thoughts of God, but every word that proceedeth
out of the mouth of God. I got an every word Bible. It
was translated from the right text, which means from the right
Greek words into the right English words. God had control of this
thing. Inspired by God, preserved for
us in the English language, a word-for-word Bible. Man, that's enough for
me. I don't want something man's played with. I want what God
has taken care of and God has left us with. J.C. Penney was a Christian businessman
challenged about his giving. He was in debt hundreds of thousands
of dollars back when that would have meant millions of dollars
by today's money. And he always gave us an excuse
that he had a lot of creditors that he needed to pay back. But
then one day he realized that God was his first creditor. He
decided he would start tithing. He tithed 10% that first year
and second year. And as God blessed him and got
him out of debt, he went up to 20%, 30%. By the time that he
died, he was giving 90% of his income to God and living off
the 10%. Wow, really? Yeah, JCPenney. That's probably why they lasted
so long. Of course, I don't know how long ago they got away from
all that, but nevertheless. See, these are just fishermen. But this was Jesus, and they
obeyed his word. The Bible says, trust in the
Lord with all thine heart. Lean not unto thine own understanding,
in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. You can trust God, put him first,
he'll lead you right in all things. Not only that, they were convinced
of his person, his word, and of his authority. Let's go over
to the passage in Matthew chapter four. Matthew chapter 4. Notice verse 20 of Matthew chapter
4. And they straightway left their
nets and followed him. Look at verse 22. And they immediately
left the ship and their father and followed him. They left all
to follow him. As a matter of fact, the call
that he gave them seems to be very similar to what he gave
the rich young ruler in Mark chapter 10. Sell all you have
and come follow me. Give to the poor and follow me.
A dramatic change in life when you surrender to the Lord. I
guarantee you all these missionaries out of Madison Baptist Church,
they surrender to the call of God on their lives, it would
mean a dramatic change in their lifestyle. but they're willing
to do that because you see they trusted Jesus and they had confidence
in his authority. Paul would say, for you're bought
with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and your spirit,
which are God's. Over and over again, Paul describes
himself as Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ. And that word servant
is the word bond slave. He bought me, he owns me, he
has the right to call me for anything that He desires. Totally
surrendered to Him. If you know who He is, according
to Romans 12 and verse 1, it's just reasonable to surrender
your life to Him. And I beseech you, therefore,
brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies
a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable
service. The last Sunday of January 1974,
a missionary to Brazil by the name of Charles Hocking was preaching
at First Baptist Church in Otsego, Michigan, where My wife and I
were members. And during the message, he made
this statement. He said, if you think that God
may be calling you to preach, He is. And I don't think that
statement's always true. But when he said it that day,
it was true of me. As soon as he said it, I knew
it was true of me. So I went forward and surrendered
my life to preach the gospel. That meant selling a house. We'd
only been in for about four months. That meant giving up my job at
WAOP radio station just north of Chattanooga. I can still remember
telling my in-laws that God had called me to preach and that
we were moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee to go to Bible college.
And they didn't wanna discourage us, I know, but it was that look,
because Kathy at that time was only about a little less than
two years old. And okay, you're taking our daughter
and granddaughter down to Chattanooga. Where are you gonna work? Don't
have a clue. Well, where are you gonna live? I don't know.
Well, how long are you gonna be down there? I couldn't tell
you. And that's what you're gonna do with your life. I remember
we put our house up for sale right away. Like I said, we'd
only been in a few months and put the house up for sale and
had other church members that said, Brother Mike, don't sell
your house. What if it doesn't work out?
I said, I've never even considered that. God called, he's gonna
take care of it. I didn't have any doubt about it. I don't think
that made me a super Christian or anything like that. But either
God called me or he didn't. He called, I answered. I figured
he had it worked out. I didn't have to have it worked
out. Just surrender, just do what he says. You follow God.
It'll always be right. It may not seem profitable. It
may not seem wise to other people, but if it's God's call, you can
count on it because we understand his authority. These are just
fishermen. They dealt with friends and family
and boats and nets and fish. Think about it for a moment.
What did they know about catching men? What did they know about
it? They knew how to catch fish,
but catching men is different than catching fish. I mean, you
don't catch men with worms. What would they know about it?
You see, they're gonna have to trust Him later on. Jesus is
gonna tell them, but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you
be endued with power from on high. Well, what's that? I mean, Lord, all we got is the
Old Testament. If we're to go into all the world
and preach the gospel to every creature, they'd spend all their
time in the Sea of Galilee. This doesn't make any sense.
How are we gonna do this? They don't even question it.
They understood His authority. God said it. He'll work it out.
That's all that's necessary. Well, man, you better read one
of these emerging church books on how to grow a church. No,
no, all they had to do was listen to Jesus about how to grow a
church. And you just do it and see what
God makes out of it. And look at all the churches
around the world today that have come out of that just because
these fishermen decided they were going to obey the Lord.
Not only that, they believed in His authority and they had
faith in His plan. Now, he did that work for preparation
by having them go out, these fishermen, and throw the net
on the other side of the boat, and look what they caught. He
was preparing them. They had to follow Him. They'd
had to live with Him. They had walked with Him. They
had obeyed Him and other things. Now, they're not gonna be accepted
sometime. Matter of fact, not too long
after the death-bound resurrection of Christ and he ascends up into
glory, they're gonna be arrested. And not just once, but many times. These guys were not trained orators. They were not brought up in a
special Bible college that teach them the fine things of homiletics. They were just fishermen. Just fishermen. They couldn't
even carry a New Testament in. They didn't have one yet. That's
amazing. They had to go by with what knowledge
they had of the scriptures that they had heard in the synagogue
and the things that Jesus had taught them in the three and
a half years during his public ministry. And yet on that very
first day when they went out to preach after 10 days of prayer,
they have 3,000 get saved. Hey, you fishermen, see what
fishermen can do? You fishermen, think about it.
See what fishermen can do. Just trust the Lord. By the way,
it's not because they were fishermen. This is for everybody that knows
him as Savior. You give yourself to God, watch
what God can do. In Acts chapter four, verses
one through five, 5,000 men got saved. 5,000, that's a good-sized
church right there. Well, you'd never have to have
a special Sunday after that, would you? I'd say every Sunday
would be a special Sunday. They saw thousands saved in the
first several months of the church. It's absolutely amazing. Just
fishermen, yes, but here's what God says about them. In Acts
chapter 4, beginning in verse 12, now, when they saw the boldness
of Peter and John and perceived that they were unlearned and
ignorant men, they marveled, and they took knowledge of them
that they'd been with Jesus. And beholding the man which was
healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. How did they do it? They just
followed Jesus. They just did what he said. They
had faith in what he had told them, and look what God did. Often the story is quoted that
D.L. Moody, who only had like a third grade education, was
used as an evangelist to shake two continents for God. Not only
that, they say his ministry had won over a million souls to Christ.
You see, he had to leave school. It was either in third grade
or fifth grade because his dad had died and he had seven brothers
and sisters and he had to get a job to help his mom feed the
family. And God used him in a tremendous
way. When he was asked later on, after
a long time successful ministry, what inspired you? He said that
he saw a note that was written, the world has yet to see what
God can do with a man totally surrendered to him. And D.L. Moody said, by the grace of God,
I'll be that man. The thing is, that statement
was wrong. God had seen what the world could do with a man
totally surrendered to Him. We could see it, for instance,
in Jesus Himself. He was totally surrendered to
God. We could see it in the Apostle Paul, wrote 13 of the 27 books
of the New Testament. We could see it in other lives
of the disciples as well. So that saying wasn't true, but
it did inspire A man who didn't have much of an education, but
God used him to win multitudes to Christ. They followed him. You know, unfortunately for most
pastors today, this is not my quote. I found it, I thought
it fit with all our education, our fine buildings, our image
of the church. We're doing less to win people
to Christ than our unschooled forefathers did. We are no longer
fishers of men, but keepers of the aquarium. And we spend most
of our time swiping fish from each other's bowl. We ought to be about reaching
the world. Are you convinced of his person today? Are you
convinced of his word? Are you convinced of his authority
today? Are you convinced that if you
surrender to him, that God could do something marvelous with your
life? Are you convinced? Well, if you
are, let me ask, would you be willing to be committed enough
just in this next week? to contact somehow, could be
by phone, could be in your neighborhood, could be at the mall, could be
any place around here, to contact five people this week. Maybe for some, pass out 10 tracts
this week. I'm not talking about the next
week, I'm just talking about this week. Perhaps invite, try to witness,
try to go through the gospel account At least one time this
week. Could you take up that challenge
this week? Are you convinced enough in his
person to introduce somebody else to him? What a great thing
that would be. To give out gospel tracts. I mean, we buy thousands every
year. We didn't buy them to keep them on the shelf. We bought
them to give them out. so people can be saved. I'm not
asking about the rest of the church, I'm asking about you.
Would you be willing to commit yourself this week to do just
those simple things right there? Contact 10 or five or give out
10 tracks, go through the gospel with one person this week. It'd be exciting this next week
to find out what God did with that. Are you convinced enough? You say, well, man, I've tried
that a lot and I've had a hard time with it. Well, these people
had just got done fishing all night. Jesus comes along, offers
them a new kind of fishing. I'll make you fishers of men.
There's something they didn't know too much about. He's gonna
say to them, go into all the world and preach the gospel to
every creature. How are they gonna get all that
done? But they surrendered to do it.
So we're not talking about the world here. We're just talking
about 10. I don't know how many we've got in the auditorium,
but think about it. Just everybody got the gospel out to 10 people
this week in a track. Just went through the gospel
with one and tried, at least attempted. Wow. I only imagined
that God would have to do something great with that. Can you trust
Him? Are you willing to make that
kind of a commitment? Father, we come to you in Jesus'
name. I look at what these fishermen were being asked to do, and they
got up and followed you. Now, Lord, I pray that you'd
stir our hearts today. Perhaps there's one here that's
never truly been born again. May they come to Jesus, you said,
but as many as received him, to them give you power to become
the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Lord,
I pray today. There's one here without Christ
that they'd come to Jesus and be saved this morning. I pray,
Heavenly Father, for believers. May we put you to the test today,
Lord, and just trust you. Trust you this week for something
simple. Be interesting to see how you
go far above and beyond that right here in this place. Have
your way in every life today, I pray, in Jesus' name.
