Hello again and welcome to the program. We're here hopefully with a little strength for today. The Bible says in Philippians 4-7 that we can have the peace of God which passes all understanding even during the trials. We're going to look at how to have that peace.
In Philippians chapter 1 and verse 12, Paul said, I would, that you should understand. But then in Philippians 4, 7, he talked about something we cannot understand. He said, the peace of God, which passes all understanding. That means that Paul couldn't understand it either.
How can we have this peace in the middle of our problems? In Philippians 1 and 2, it says, grace be unto you, and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. We need to understand that this is much more than an introduction to a letter. He said, grace be unto you, and at the end of the book of Philippians in chapter four and 23, again he said, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all, amen.
Grace for the Christian is a desire and the ability to do God's work and to do it God's way. In Philippians chapter 1 and verse number 3, we read that Paul said, I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. Who's he talking about here? He's talking about those Christians back in the church at Philippi. He said, I thank my God five different times while he was going through persecution. He looked for things he could be thankful for.
Not only that, it says, I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. The word you, referring to those people in Philippi, is found in the book of Philippians 29 times, the word ye is found 26 times, and the word your, referring to those Philippians, is found 20 times. And so we see that Paul's focus was not on his own problems, but on others, for a total of 75 times he mentions them in only four chapters.
For example, in chapter 1, he said in verse 1, grace be unto you and peace. Verse 3, I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. Verse 4, every prayer of mine for you. Verse 6, being confident that God is going to work a good work in you. Verse 7, even as it is meet for me to think of you, I have you in my heart, ye are partakers of my grace. Verse 8, how greatly I long after you. Verse 24, to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. Verse 25, I shall abide and continue with you, for your furtherance of joy and truth. Verse 26, my coming unto you. 27, let your conversation, meaning manner of life, be as it becometh the gospel of Christ. I come and see you that I may hear of your affairs that ye stand fast. Verse 28, in nothing terrified by your adversaries. And then in verse 29, for you it is given in the behalf of Christ.
His total focus, even though he was going through a very difficult time, was for these other Christians at Philippi. In Philippians 1 verse 9 he said, In this I pray that your love, your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in understanding. Now concerning understanding, he said in verse 12, but I would you should understand, brethren, that the things which have happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel.
The word understand is in the Bible 91 times. Understanding is in the Bible 160 times. Understandeth 11 times, for a total of 292 times, We need to understand. And what Paul was saying was they needed to understand that all the trouble he was going through was for the furtherance of the gospel.
When he closed out the letter in Philippians 22, he said, all the saints salute you, chiefly they that are of Caesar's household. How did they get Christians in Caesar's household? Well, because Paul the Apostle was there leading them to the Lord. He wouldn't have been there if he hadn't had these problems.
In Philippians chapter 4, verse 6 through 8, we have God's peace plan for the Christians, even during hard times. Be sure to be with us for our next program. We'll have a look at it.
