If you would, please turn in your Bibles to Mark's gospel, chapter five. The fifth chapter of Mark's gospel as we make our way through this gospel. We find ourselves in chapter five, verses 21 through 43. Mark five. Beginning with verse 21. Mark chapter 5, beginning in verse 21. The Word of the Lord.
Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to Him, and He was by the sea. And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came Jairus by name and when he saw him he fell at his feet and Begged him earnestly saying my little daughter lies at the point of death Come and lay your hands on her that she may be healed and she will live
So when Jesus went with him a great multitude followed him and thronged him now a certain woman had a flow of blood for 12 years and and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, if only I may touch his clothes, I shall be made well. Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed from the affliction.
And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that power had gone out of him, turned around in the crowd and said, who touched my clothes? But his disciples said to him, you see the multitude thronging you and you say, who touched me? And he looked around to see her who had done this thing. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he came to her and he said to her, daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed of your affliction.
While he was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue's house who said, your daughter is dead, why trouble the teacher any further? As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he said to the ruler of the synagogue, do not be afraid, only believe. And he permitted no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. then came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and saw atonement in those who wept and wailed loudly. When he came in, he said to them, why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping. And they ridiculed him, but when he had put them all outside, he took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with him, and entered where the child was lying. Then he took the child by the hand, and he said to her, talitha komai, which is translated, little girl, I say to you, arise. Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was 12 years of age, and they were overcome with great amazement. But he commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given to her to eat.
Let us pray. Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for this, your word. We pray your richest blessings upon the reading and hearing of it. Heavenly Father, we've gathered here this morning to worship you in spirit and in truth, and we pray that the worship that is offered to you is indeed that, worship in spirit and in truth, acceptable worship. Holy Spirit, we pray that that which you have prepared for us this morning, that you would take and you would make personal application of it to each and every one of us. You know our hearts, you know us intimately. From the crown of our head to the tips of our toes, to the innermost part of our being, you know it all. You are he who searches the hearts and minds of your people. And so we pray that you would be pleased to make application of your word this morning to each and every one of us.
Lord Jesus, we pray that if there's anyone here this morning or anyone listening to this message who has not yet placed their faith, their trust in you for the forgiveness of their sin, Lord, we pray that you would look to the Father and that you would mediate on their behalf, asking the Father to graciously draw them unto himself through saving faith in you.
Lord, I pray that you'd be pleased to bless thy servant's work, that you would enable me to speak clearly, authoritatively, boldly, accurately. And again, if I should speak anything amiss, I pray your forgiveness in advance. May you be glorified in all that is said and done. May your people be strengthened in their faith. May the church be edified this morning. In your holy name, we live and move, have our being and pray. Amen.
Beloved, it is devastating when one receives the news that he or she or a loved one has a fatal disease. Being diagnosed with a fatal diagnosis is devastating because it signals that death is near and soon. The moment our first parents fell from their state of innocence, the state in which God brought them into being, mankind was fatally diagnosed with a disease that is humanly incurable.
What does the Apostle Paul say in Romans 5, verse 12? There he says, therefore, just as through one man, referring to Adam, our first parent, Adam, therefore, just as through one man, sin entered the world and death through sin and thus death spread to all men because all sinned. And so the rebellion of our first parent, Adam, that he committed in the Garden of Eden, in the beginning of time, spread to all of humanity like a very aggressive cancer.
So as a result of the fall of mankind, we all have been diagnosed with a humanly incurable disease called sin, and as a result, death touches everyone. We know this to be true because we find ourselves committing sins of commission and sins of omission. In other words, we find ourselves doing the things that we ought not to be doing, and then not doing the things that we ought to be doing. We find ourselves falling short of God's law each and every day, whether it be in thought, word, or deed.
Beloved sins of commission and omission, again, doing those things we ought not to be doing and not doing those things we ought to be doing, they are symptoms. They are symptoms of sin and death, symptoms of our fallen condition. We do those things because we are fallen people. We indulge in sin because we have wicked hearts, another symptom of our fatal disease.
What does the Lord say in Jeremiah 17, nine? What is his diagnosis of fallen humanity? Notice how he diagnoses the human heart. He says, the heart is deceitful above all things, above all things, and desperately wicked. Who can know it? meaning it is beyond comprehension. Our wicked hearts are beyond comprehension. The new American standard reads, the heart is more deceitful than all else and desperately sick. Who can understand it?
And so beloved man left to himself is faced with a fatal diagnosis, which is leading him closer and closer as each moment passes to certain death. Certain death that ends in judgment. What does the author of Hebrews 9. 27 say? There we find him declaring, and it is appointed for men to die once. In other words, we all have our appointment with death. We're all gonna die. It is appointed for men to die once, but after this, the judgment. What does the author go on to say in the next verse, beginning in verse 28? So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many to those who eagerly await him will appear a second time apart from sin for salvation. Did you get that? Did you get what the author's communicating?
Again, and it is appointed for men to die once, but after this, the judgment. And he goes on to say, so Christ, because of this, because we're all appointed to death, and because after death comes the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many to those who eagerly await him. He will appear a second time apart from sin for salvation.
Because of our fatal diagnosis, Jesus came. He came to rescue us, to deliver us from the fatal diagnosis called sin. Beloved, Jesus is the cure for our diagnosis. He is the cure of our fatal disease that we know as sin. Without Jesus Christ, we would all suffer the inevitable outcome of our fatal diagnosis, death, which everyone's going to experience, and judgment, which those who do not believe will experience.
Don't misunderstand me. As a result, as we already alluded to already, as a result of sin, we're all going to experience physical death so long as the Lord's second coming is pending. So what exactly does Jesus address in regard to the humanly incurable disease of sin? Jesus cures us in the sense that we are no longer headed for judgment. Jesus saves us from the wrath of God. He saves us from God Himself. God sent His Son to save us from Himself.
Because of Jesus, we are regarded as righteous and innocent. Again, the active and passive obedience of Jesus Christ, which means that Jesus came and He actively lived the life that we cannot live. He actively kept every aspect of the law perfectly, something that we cannot do. And he did that, and by doing that, he secured the righteousness we require to be right with God. And then he passively allowed himself to be crucified to the cross, thus paying the penalty of our sin, securing the innocence we require to be right with God. And so Jesus, because of Jesus, We went from guilt and shame to righteous and innocent.
Jesus is the only one who can administer the antidote for mankind's humanly incurable disease of sin. Without Jesus, man has no hope. He is without God in the world. He has no hope of being delivered from the humanly incurable disease that we call sin. Beloved many today, They go through great lengths in an attempt to cure themselves. They go through great lengths. They are looking to men and methods in an attempt to heal themselves from their fatal diagnosis, when the only hope is the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Only He can properly address man's fallen condition. Only He can deliver us from the disease of sin.
And I believe this brings us to today's passage here in Mark chapter five, verse 21 through 43. In today's passage, we meet two people, two people faced with an incurable disease and both arriving to the conclusion, both of these people arriving to the conclusion that their only hope for deliverance is none other than Jesus Christ. And beloved, I believe, as we will now see, Jesus Christ is indeed the great physician. He is the great physician. Let us look to our text. We'll read it once more, and then we'll get into, and then we'll look to the Lord in prayer once again. Beginning in verse 21.
Now, when Jesus had crossed over again by the boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to him, and he was by the sea. And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw him, he fell at his feet and begged him earnestly saying, my little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her and she that she may be healed and she will live. So Jesus went with him and a great multitude followed him and thronged him.
Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for 12 years and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, if I only may touch his clothes, I shall be made well. Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed from the affliction.
And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that power had gone out of him, turned around in the crowd and said, who touched my clothes? But the disciple said to him, you see the multitude thronging you and you say, who touched me? And he looked around to see her who had done this thing. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.
While he was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue's house who said, your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further? As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he said to the ruler of the synagogue, do not be afraid, only believe. He permitted no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. Then he came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and saw the torment and those who wept and wailed loudly. When he came in, he said to them, why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping. And they ridiculed him. But when he had put them all outside, he took the father and the mother of the child and those who were with him and entered where the child was lying. And he took the child by the hand and said to her, talithai komai. which is translated, little girl, I say to you, arise. Immediately, the girl arose and walked for she was 12 years of age and they were overcome with great amazement, but he commanded them strictly that no one should know it and said that something should be given to her to eat.
Let us pray. Heavenly Father, be with us this morning. May you be pleased with our worship May you be pleased to bless this gathering. For your honor and glory, we pray, amen.
Verses 21 to 24. Now, when Jesus had crossed over again by the boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to him, and he was by the sea. And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw him, he fell at his feet and begged him earnestly, saying, my little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her that she may be healed and she will live. So Jesus went with him and a great multitude followed him and thronged him. In other words, they were pressing on him. Beloved, as one commentator rightly said, As we saw from last week's text, and we consider today's text, Jesus went from being asked to leave to being asked to come to the home of a leader of a synagogue in Capernaum.
Jairus obviously knew of Jesus's healing and his encounters with the demonic. So with that knowledge, he clearly believed that Jesus could heal his daughter from certain death. Jairus obviously exhausted all possibilities and hopes of delivering his daughter from her fatal condition. He exhausted all possibilities. And so he arrived at the place where Jesus Christ was his only hope. Jesus was his only hope for his daughter. And so he goes to Jesus, humbly pleading for his help. He believed that all that Jesus needed to do was to touch his daughter for her to be delivered. He knew that Jesus could deliver his daughter.
We begin reading in verse 25, Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for 12 years and had suffered many things from many physicians. She spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came to him in the crowd and touched his garment, for she said, if only I may touch his clothes, I shall be made well.
Beloved, this poor woman, having exhausted her financial resource, having spent all of her money looking for a cure, likewise understood, like Jairus did, likewise understood, her only hope was Jesus Christ. She thought to herself, if only I may touch his clothes, I shall be made well. And so having pressed through this great multitude, she eventually found Jesus and she gets close enough to touch his clothes. And having made contact with Jesus, she was instantly cured, instantly delivered, instantly made whole, instantly made whole, instantly the 12 year blood flow, it came to a screeching halt.
She pressed through this crowd that was pressing upon Christ. And when she finally came close enough to touch His clothes, she did so and she was immediately healed. What does Mark say in verse 29? Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.
Beloved, this woman understood her need for Christ. She understood that he was her only hope of deliverance. And so what does she do? She set her eyes on Christ. She set her eyes on Christ and she persevered. She persevered until she was able to touch his clothing. She understood that deliverance from her incurable disease is found in Christ. And so she pressed on until she found Jesus. She didn't give up. She persevered until she found Christ.
What does Mark go on to record for us, beginning with verse 30? And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that power had gone out of him, turned around in the crowd and said, who touched my clothes? But his disciples said to him, You see the multitude thronging you, you see all these people pressing on you, Lord, and you say, who touched me? And he looked around to see her who had done this thing. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him, told him the whole truth. And she said to him, and he said to her, daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed of your affliction.
And so here we find this woman suffered 12 years of this blood flow. She finally reached Christ. She was healed of her affliction. And then when Christ laid eyes on her, when he saw her, she knew that he knew that it was her that touched his clothes. And so what does she do? She humbles herself before Christ and she lays out her case before him. She lays out her difficulty before him. Lord, this is what was happening to me. This is what my issue was. This is what my fatal issue was, my fatal health issue was. And so I came and I searched for you. And I knew that if I could just touch the hem of your garment, that I could be made whole. And so she laid out her case before him.
She did not know how Jesus would respond to being touched. And so when Jesus asked who touched him, she remained silent in hope of blending into the multitude and not being found out. But when Jesus made eye contact with her, when he found her out, she came forward and she confessed. She told him the whole truth. And what was Jesus' response? He responds with compassion. He responds compassionately.
Beloved, so many people were pushing toward Christ, touching him, that the disciples were astonished when he asked who touched him. This poor woman, this poor woman, she truly believed that Jesus could heal her. She truly believed that Jesus could address her fatal diagnosis. She truly believed that he could help her. And so her faith was great because she pushed through the great multitude to reach Jesus. Her perseverance shows that she possesses true faith. She truly believed in Jesus's ability to deliver her from a condition that no one else except Christ could deliver her.
Beloved, if we truly believe and if we truly want Jesus to deliver us from those things that trouble us, those sins that we so easily get entangled with. If we truly believe that Jesus could help us, we will set our eyes on him and persevere until we too experience his delivering compassion. Jesus is the great physician. He is the Lord of both body and soul.
So this brings us back to Jairus and his little daughter. Beginning in verse 35, While he was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue's house who said, your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further? As Jesus made his way to Jairus' home, some from his house came to report that his daughter had succumbed to death. They even told him that he ought to surrender to the idea of Jesus being able to save his daughter, because now, after all, she's dead.
Beloved, one can imagine how he felt upon learning about his daughter's death, the temptation To lose all hope is very real. Jesus understood that, and so he encourages Jairus not to lose faith. What do we read in verse 36? It says, as soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he said to the ruler of the synagogue, do not be afraid, only believe. Don't lose faith.
What do we read beginning in verse 37? and he permitted no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. Then he came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and saw a torment in those who wept and wailed loudly. When he came in, he said to them, why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping. And they ridiculed him. But when he had put them all outside, he took the father and the mother of the child and those who are with him and entered where the child was lying.
Beloved, they laughed at Christ because the little girl was, she was truly dead. Mark recorded this for us because he wants us to understand that the little girl was truly dead. The people saw her, they were there with her. She was truly dead. And so these people not understanding who Jesus is and his ability to deliver, they laughed at him, they ridiculed him.
Beloved, for Jesus, Raising a dead person is just as easy as waking up someone from sleep. It's just as easy as waking someone with a gentle touch and a word from sleep.
So what do we read beginning in verse 41? Then he took the child by the hand and said to her, Talitha Komai, which is translated, little girl, I say to you, arise. Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was 12 years of age, and they were overcome with great amazement, but he commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given to her to eat.
Beloved, the kingdom of God and Christ has come. and was demonstrating his power over sin and its consequences.
This poor woman and Jairus's little daughter had an incurable disease. This is what Mark wants us to understand, that the Lord wants us to understand. This poor woman and Jairus' little daughter had an incurable disease, a fatal disease, and there was no one to be found who could deliver them, both of them. Jairus exhausted all possibilities for his daughter, and this poor woman, she exhausted all of her money looking for help from these physicians, and no one could deliver them, no one. only Jesus could deliver. Only Jesus, the great physician, could deliver.
And once again, with the healing of the woman and the little girl, Jesus demonstrates that He truly is the Son of God who has come to usher in the kingdom of God.
As we noted at the beginning of our time together, Man has a fatal disease that no one can address except Christ. We're all sinners. We're all fallen. We're all in need of God's saving grace. The only one that can deliver us from the consequences of our sin, the only one that can deliver us from the judgment to come, is Jesus Christ.
And as we said earlier, God sent his son into the world to save sinners from himself. Jesus is the only one that can deliver man from the consequence of his sin. He's the only one that can cure a sinner from their incurable disease called sin. Only Jesus, the great physician, can deliver one from the fatal disease of sin, and only him and him alone.
And if only, if only, like the woman of our story, and Jairus, the father of this little girl, if only men and women and children, if only sinners would look to Christ in faith, believing, that he could deliver them from their sin. If only they would persevere and seek for Jesus. If only they would do that, they too would come to know Jesus Christ as the great physician who has come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Let us pray. Our heavenly father, we thank you for this, your word. Heavenly Father, we thank you for sending your beloved son, Jesus Christ, who came to seek and to save that which was lost, who came to deliver those whom you have given to him from the consequence of sin, from the fatal disease of sin. Heavenly Father, we do pray that if there's anyone here this morning or anyone listening to this message who has not yet been who has not yet been delivered from sin and its consequences. Father, we pray that you would be so pleased, that you'd be so kind to grant them saving faith in Jesus Christ, to draw them unto yourself through saving faith in Jesus Christ so that they too can come to know and believe that Jesus Christ is indeed their only hope. the great physician who has come to heal the sick, to deliver the lost, to redeem those whom you have given to him. In your holy name we pray, amen.
