Well, good morning once again. I would ask you to turn in your Bibles to the gospel of John. We're in John chapter 14. And we're going to be looking at verse 15 down to the end of the chapter. It's a passage that's all about the Holy Spirit of God. Jesus speaks it so that his own disciples, and by extension us, would be encouraged. It is a passage of scripture that bent my brain when I was in the study. That's a good thing when that happens. What I mean by that is just the logic is very dense here. I had really hoped that I was going to be really physically alert this morning and feeling 100%, but I'm not operating on all cylinders. I think I'm coming down with something, but probably that's in good God and gracious providence—not probably, it is—so that I would be reminded that I absolutely need Him. to help me to not only read this passage of Scripture but also for me to preach it and for you to listen to it and apply it to your lives. It is marvelous what Jesus Christ says here by way of encouragement. So I'm going to read it for you and then we're going to pray once again. Gospel of John. Chapter 14, imagine the scene, they're in the upper room, Jesus just alone with his 11 disciples. He's told them that he is going away and he assures them of some things. Verse 15, the word of God. Jesus speaking, if you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper to be with you forever, even the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you. Little while, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. Judas, not Iscariot, said to him, Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the world? Jesus answered him, if anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words, and the word that you hear is not mine, but the father's who sent me. These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you, but the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, I'm going away and I will come to you. If you loved me, you would have rejoiced because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it takes place so that when it does take place, you may believe. will no longer talk much with you for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me but I do as the father has commanded me so that the world may know that I love the father. Rise let us go from here. Again the word of God and we thank him for it. Amen. Let's pray one more time. Spirit of the living God, even Spirit of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, fall fresh on us. Help us to see what's in this passage. Help us to not only see, but to marvel what's in this passage. Help us to be encouraged by this passage. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word and for your spirit. Precious Jesus, we thank you that you have not left us alone. May we see that this morning. We pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen. I want to take you back to a church in the 1960s, Jarvis Street Baptist Church. I was told this story by my dad. At the time, it had the largest Sunday school in Canada. I think there was something like 1,500 to 2,000 Sunday school scholars. They had umpteen many buses picking up kids from all over the cities. There were countless Sunday school teachers. The auditorium would have been packed every single Sunday, 1,200 plus. And it was a well-oiled machine, said one. In fact, one person related to another this. The place is such a well-oiled machine that the Holy Spirit could leave for a couple of weeks and the people wouldn't even notice. That wasn't a compliment. That was an indictment. We can all have that tendency, can't we? Jarvis Street Baptist Church in the 60s, not alone in that, there is a proneness among God's people to think that this work that we're involved in, loving each other, loving the loss with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, loving our God, can be accomplished in and of ourselves can be accomplished in our own strength. It's never said in so many words. Typically how it manifests itself is just in a prayerlessness of God's people. I don't think, having said that, that for the most part that's the case here at Sovereign Grace Community Church. I think there is a deep awareness of how humanly impossible the work is that our Savior has given us to do. In either case, wherever you are, this is where this text comes into play. It's all about the Holy Spirit. I want you to remember a couple of things beyond that. Let's put them in this way. This sermon is brought to you by the letter P and the number 2 this morning. Sesame Street from the pulpit. The letter P and the number 2. Holy Spirit, think about presence. And Holy Spirit, think about peace. Those two things, if you don't remember anything else. We have to fix the account in its context in this gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a revelation of who Jesus is, what He has come to do. It is written that you might believe. You're not a believer this morning. It's so that you would enter into life for the very first time, not just Sucking in air not just going about work not just going about the things of family or leisure but life that which is truly life knowing the one true and Living God and Jesus Christ whom he has said and it is also for you the believer that you might enter more fully Into this life for which Jesus Christ has saved you Christ righteous to bring the unrighteous to God by his death on Calvary's cross. The entire gospel is about that, all about this revelation of who Jesus is and what he has come to do. Prologue is all about that. The epilogue is all about the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ up in Galilee. Part one is all about that. And now, in Jesus' passion, this is where we really see Jesus Christ being disclosed to us. We have considered the scene that symbolizes and anticipates the ultimate self-disclosure at the cross, Jesus washing his disciples' feet. Now, in that, he has also given them the new command. He's loved them in this way. He says to them, I want you to love one another in this way. A new commandment I give to you that you love one another just as I have loved you. You also are to love one another by this. All people will know that you are my disciples. If you have love for one another, John 1334, he has given the command because he has also told them that I'm not going to be here for a while. And we recall, and you can imagine the disciples' faces at that point, though Jesus has given that command, it's in that context of him going away, and they're crestfallen by it. They're really, really sad. by this announcement. It didn't compute with them that the Messiah would actually go away. It didn't line up with their understanding of who Messiah was and what he had come to do. And Jesus, of course, knows them inside and out, and he parks, expanding on that new commandment, does so momentarily, And he speaks to them about why it was necessary that he goes away. I'm going away to prepare a place for you. And not so much a place we discover, but he's going away to ready them to be with God, to be with himself. He also encourages them that in his going away, the days of greater things in God's redemptive timetable the work of bringing people to God, it was being ushered in. We are in the time of greater things. Amazing. Now as encouraging as being in the time of greater things of God's redemptive work of bringing people to himself in Christ is, it can be a very daunting thing if we consider the work as something that we alone have to do, this loving one another with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and loving our God. But we don't do this alone. We're not alone in this. Listen to what Jesus says next in part one of his farewell discourse. Part one comes to a conclusion in the farewell discourse at the end of this chapter. He begins by saying, and he returns here to that new commandment, but he's expanding in it. If you love me now, he says, you will keep my commandments. So he's not just reiterating the new command. Love one another as I have loved you. If you love me, you will keep my commandments, including this new command to love one another. Those who love me will keep all my commandments including loving one another. I can imagine that those words would have landed fairly heavily upon the disciples. They land heavily on me. Loving God? Loving Jesus Christ? Loving one another? I'm not there all the time. I'm not there most days. I need help in that. I feel the weight of this. And I think Jesus said this, that his disciples would feel the weight of it too. so that they and we would not look within ourselves to fulfill it, but that they and we would look outside of ourselves and look to Him for enabling power, look for help to perform it. And Jesus doesn't leave them or us hanging. He immediately goes into that help that He's going to leave. What He says next is designed to encourage them and to encourage us. Verses 16 and 17, by way of introduction, and I will ask the father and he will give you another helper to be with you forever, even the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him for he dwells with you and will be in you. Let me paraphrase that and let me just dive a little more deeply into some of those things that he attributes to the Holy Spirit of God, the third person of the Trinity. The paraphrase, I'm going to ask God to give you the Holy Spirit so that you might obey. Loving one another, loving me. You've already experienced him coming on you, this is my paraphrase, but now he will be in you. And not only for a time, that forever and ever. D.A. Carson says, Jesus' true followers will love him. Will love him. They will obey him. And he on his part will secure for them from the father who denies nothing to his son, another helper. End quote. Now, thinking about the third person of the Trinity and how Jesus Christ describes him here. He assigns this name, so to speak, of Helper. The Greek word there is Paracletos, or we would transliterate that to the English word not used very often of Paraclete. The root of which means to come alongside and has this idea of getting aid of any kind. the aid of power, the aid of comfort, the aid of encouragement, the aid of peace. Notice he also says another helper. That word another is interesting. It is alos in the Greek, which means another of equal quality, not heteros. Another Greek word, which means another of different qualities, said one writer. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is designated by Jesus Christ as equal to himself. The Holy Spirit is God, not a force, the third person of the Trinity, fully God, another helper. Another thing to notice here, the spirit of truth. The Holy Spirit is the one who communicates truth. And principally the truth that he communicates, J.R. Packer says, the chief work of the Holy Spirit is to mediate the presence of God to us to the praise and glory of the Father. And that's what the Spirit does. He mediates that truth about Jesus Christ, and he does so through the Word of God. And in doing that, that helps us to love God and His Christ and to love one another in this time of greater things. He mediates that truth to us, that empowers us to love one another and to love God. And Jesus is going to expand on this in a few moments, but he introduces it here. So immediately we get this blessing. We've got this great work that is laid upon us, this work of the kingdom of God, this work of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, telling people about Jesus Christ, how to get God, coming alongside brothers and sisters, reminding them of what they have in the Lord Jesus Christ, diving deeply into Jesus' person and work that we might comprehend His love and so love Him And Jesus says you're not alone in all of that. I'm going to give you another helper, the Holy Spirit of the living God. Now, that we might truly lay hold of Jesus' promise here, notice how he goes on to explain what that help entails and what it ensures. This is an entire doctrine of the Holy Spirit of God But in the upper room, this is what Jesus focuses on. So what are those two P words? Presence. Second word? Peace. Okay. What the help entails is presence. Presence of who? The presence of the Triune God. Jesus promises, this is verse 18 to 24, point number one, that the Spirit of God will dwell with us and be in us. Do you feel that this morning? God in you, dwelling in you. I don't always feel it, but it's true. Because God says it's true. And Jesus presses into that here. It is the one God who dwells with us and will be in us. It is God the Father, in God the Son, in God the Spirit who dwells with us and will be in us. It's amazing to contemplate. Let's work through it. Jesus says here, verse 18, I will not leave you as orphans. will Come to you The question is how what's he saying here? What does that mean? We got to work through the logic Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Well, how how is that? What's he saying here another clue because I live you also will live So follow Jesus's train of thought So the one who has said to them, in the upper room, I'm going away. And they're really sad about that. Now he says, I will come to you. Is Jesus contradicting himself here? There's differences of opinion, I must add, in the commentaries on this as to what Jesus is saying. But I think we need to follow the logic. Again, the one who said he is leaving also says, I will not abandon you. I will come to you. So then, in what sense will Jesus come to them, given that he has said he is going away? Again, I've said Jesus gives a couple of clues. Clue number one, the world will not see me, but you will see me. The way the world sees things is materially. They see everything materially. They can't see the spirit because the spirit is spirit. We can see the spirit in the spirit. We know that He exists and that He is. The world doesn't see like that. The world sees everything materially. It is blind to the spiritual, but not so believers. So I'm landing my argumentation, those commentaries, that believers will see Jesus by the Spirit with eyes of faith. I think that's clear from the logic. You might disagree. That's okay. Clue number two. I think it supports this. I live, therefore you too will live. Not a straightforward reiteration of the doctrine of the resurrection. It's all in the context of Jesus going away and Jesus coming back to his disciples, that they might have his presence. And in having His presence, what do we naturally have or supernaturally have? We have life. Life by definition in the Bible is relationship with the living God. It starts the moment of conversion. It comes to glorious fullness at the consummation. But again, how is that life possible in the present? How is that life possible in the present? It is possible by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, even the Spirit of the Father, indwelling the believer. Jesus, having made that argument, I'm going away, but I will come to you. The world can't see me, but you will see me. Because I live, you too will live. He now sums up. In that day, what day? The day the Father gifts the Spirit. And if you think about your personal experience, in your conversion, in your regeneration to the believer, you will know, listen, that I am in my Father. All this language of mutual indwelling is here. And you in me. So we're in Jesus. Jesus is in the Father. I in you what does that mean Jesus in us the father in us the spirit in us? Whoever has my commandments and keeps them he it is who loves me and He who loves me will be loved by my father and I will love him and manifest myself to him returning to the commands So again to paraphrase the one who is leaving them says I will not abandon you I I will come to you, I will come to you in the Spirit. And then he adds something here in verse 21, and you will experience me as you do what I say by the aid of the Spirit. William Hendrickson, another New Testament commentator. Jesus says, in the Spirit, I am myself coming back to you. The Spirit reveals the Christ, glorifies Him, applies His merits to the hearts of believers, makes His teachings effective in their lives. Hence, when the Spirit is poured out, Christ truly returns. Moreover, in the Spirit, the disciples will indeed observe Jesus. For that Spirit from Pentecost on will bring Jesus' teachings concerning Himself home to the hearts of these men and their followers, we're going to see this, so that what the Lord from heaven is doing on earth day by day will pass in review before their eyes. And finally, this manifestation of Christ to the believer is ever in the spirit and as we shall see again through the word of Christ." End quote. Judas, verse 22, responds. The disciples, of course, are still confused. Oh, Messiah, we were thinking you was going to be a political guy. We're thinking he was going to throw off the Roman yoke. And this whole idea of Messiah going away does not compute. And the fact that we can only see Messiah and not the world seeing Messiah, not the Romans seeing Messiah, doesn't compute. So Judas, verse 22, not as scary, it said to him, Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the world? So Jesus, what he does is he repeats the truth. Again, tying the triune God's indwelling of the believer by the Spirit with the believer's performance by the Spirit of all that Jesus commands. So the Spirit, let me just clarify this, is in every single believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. But we experience More of that indwelling when we are walking in the Spirit in line with what Jesus Christ commands. Can you testify to that? You're in the things of God and you experience the glory of God and the blessing of knowing Him. And when we at times go away from that, going away from doing what He says, neglecting the Spirit, neglecting the Word, we don't feel Him, though He is there. So Jesus speaks and he answers, reiterates, if anyone loves me, he will keep my word and my father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words and the word that you hear is not mine, the father's who sent me. Something that he said before, case in point, chapter 7 verse 16. Carson says, while Jesus leaves his disciples in order to prepare in his father's house dwelling places for his followers, he simultaneously joins with the father's name, and their equality is implicit in making a dwelling place in the believer. That's beautiful. I'm going away to make dwelling places, but I'm also going to make a dwelling place. Beautiful. So again, what does the help entail? What does the promise of the Holy Spirit entail? P number one, presence. the presence of the Triune God, the Triune God's indwelling us by the Spirit, the Spirit of God in turn mediating Christ to us by His Word, the Spirit granting us power to perform all that our Jesus commands by the Word of Christ, love of God, love of neighbor, and Christ manifesting Himself to us experientially in our obedience. So the logic there, it's very thick here. It's a very thick teaching here, I know. A lot to take in. But I thought about this idea of presence and two texts immediately came to mind. The first one of this. So you're out there throughout the course of your day, and you've got authority over you in various different places, and sometimes not very nice authority, and you see things going on in your life, you see things going on in the world, you feel the opposition of the evil one, and John says in his epistle to you, little children, you are from God. and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." Amen? He's in us. In us. What can we not accomplish for the living God? Again, Spirit focuses our attention on the Lord Jesus Christ in His Word. That is the power to our loving one another and loving our God. And Paul draws this out in one of my favorite verses of the New Testament, 2 Corinthians 3.18. And we all, this is the assumption, this is what we're doing with unveiled face. What are we doing? We're beholding the glory of the Lord. That's Jesus. and in that being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. What image? The image of Jesus Christ who loved his father and loved us by giving himself to us. We focus on him. That empowers us, the spirit in that. This comes from the Lord, that's Jesus, who is the spirit. Ah, there's how the spirit is tied in. Point number two. What the help ensures. So presence, P number two, peace. Oh, peace. Nobody here is ever anxious at all, are they? Don't we need to hear this word of peace from Jesus? Verses 25 to 31, what the help ensures is peace. And indeed, the New Testament scripture says it's a peace that passes, what? All understanding. But we've got to get there. Jesus ties that to something first. Notice the Word of God. Verse 25. These things I've spoken to you while I'm still with you, but the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. So again, we've got to get to the application, but he is speaking this to the disciples first and foremost. And he says, the spirit that's going to indwell you is going to be a help in this way. He's going to bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. How does the spirit do that with the disciples of Jesus Christ? What is the evidence that he actually did that? Any ideas? Scripture, we have a New Testament, don't we? Praise be to God. And John, of course, is writing this gospel after that happens, and it's interesting as we've gone through the gospel, you know, John is writing and he says things like this. Go back to chapter 2 verses 18 to 22. Chapter 2 verses 18 to 22. So the Jews said to him, what sign do you show us for doing these things? Jesus answered them, destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews then said, it has taken 46 years to build this temple and will you raise it up in three days? John's writing this. But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Well, how did John know that? The Spirit of the living God brings this account to remembrance and ties it together with the work of the Lord Jesus Christ so that John can provide that little commentary for us. It's beautiful. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. What about us? Does this mean to say that on any given week I just, you know, forget about the study, just throw all those books on my shelves, all those commentaries, and just, you know, open up the Bible first time on a Sunday morning, read it, and just preach it to you? Because, you know, the Spirit's going to bring to your remembrance those things that Jesus has spoken. Is that how we do it? No. We take that same word of truth now completed, the canon is closed, and the Spirit uses that to encourage us. It's through the same scriptures now completed that the Holy Spirit of truth helps us. He teaches and brings to remembrance all that Jesus has said causes us to see him, who he is, what he has done, what he has called us to the glory that is ours now and the fullness of what is ours in the age to come. This is an important promise. said Andreas Kostenberger regarding the disciples' future role in writing the words of Scripture. Jesus' promise here is specifically to these disciples, though there is of course a broader teaching and guiding ministry of the Holy Spirit generally in the lives of believers and through the Holy Scriptures as is taught elsewhere in the Scriptures. And this is why we see Paul writing in that great passage in Ephesians 6 about putting on the full armor of God That one of the things that he expects Christians to do is to take the helmet of salvation And what the sword of the spirit which is the word of God? Just an aside here You know anything about church history? There's a division between the Eastern and the Western Church. The Eastern Church believes that the Spirit proceeds only from the Father. That has horrible ramifications. The Spirit is the one who gives light. He's the one who illuminates. Therefore, you can get to the Father without anybody else in between. That's really, really bad. The Western Church has historically understood that the Spirit proceeds from the Father through Jesus Christ. And that is to say, you can only get to the Father through Jesus. The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name. Since the Spirit will bring the disciples to see Jesus in writing the Word, and bring us to see Jesus in hearing the Word, now we move on to our big point. It's not surprising that Jesus then says another gift will come to them from Him. Verse 27. Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." Not as the world gives to you. We often look to the world to calm our anxious fears. Not saying that we're not physiological beings, we are. And sometimes there are helps out there to calm us, because sometimes our hormones are all in a whack. Or sometimes we think, you know, if I only had, you know, this particular job, or if I only was making that particular salary, then I would be secure. That's smoke and mirrors, brother and sister, in the Lord Jesus Christ. There's only security in one, and his name is Jesus. There's only peace in one, and that's where you gotta go back to time and again. But what's he speaking of here particularly? And most theologians think about this peace in two different veins. There's the two kinds of peace that Jesus gives. There's that peace that's objective between sinners and a holy God. He is the one who by his shed blood on the cross puts an end to war. the war that we have with God and God has with us. He brings about an objective peace. That objective peace flows to any people group who come to saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. The dividing wall of hostility is gone, objectively. Nothing separates us anymore. But more than that, having understood that, A subjective feast, peace rather, is our, and it's a feast as well, is our experience. We remember that, that nothing will ever separate us from the love of God in the Lord Jesus Christ. That, that just permeates everything. And it's like, ah, yes. It's not as the world gives. Carson says Jesus displays transcendent peace, his own peace, my peace, throughout his perilous hour of suffering and death. And by that death, he absorbs in himself the malice of others, the sin of the world, and introduces the promised messianic peace in a way none of his contemporaries envisaged. The Pax Romana, that's Latin, means Roman peace, it was won and maintained by a brutal sword. And not a few Jews thought the messianic peace would have to be secured by a still mightier sword. Instead, this peace was secured by an innocent man who suffered and died at the hands of the Romans, of the Jews, and of all of us. And by his death, he effected for his followers peace with God. Objective peace Then Hendrickson moves on to comment, when the peace bestowed by Christ and merited for us by his atonement enters the heart, anxiety is driven out. You want to drive out anxiety? This is where you have to land. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4, 7. So when we lack peace subjectively, what do we do? We walk in the Spirit. We focus on that objective peace secured in Jesus Christ as revealed in the Word of God. That's what we do. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. Colossians 3 verse 15, to which indeed you were called in one body and be thankful. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. How do I do that? Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. So we need to be exhorted to this. I'm exhorting you this morning. I'm exhorting myself. You're anxious right now. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. How? Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. In what follows, That main point being made, we've got presence, we've got peace. Jesus sums up here, verses 28 and following, and He assures them that He will accomplish all that His Father had given Him to do, so that the gift of the Spirit, His presence, and His peace will come to them. But as He's doing this, there are several accompanying things, Jesus says here, that need a little bit of explanation. Verse 28, you heard me say, to you I am going away and I will come to you. Where did he say that? Verses 2 to 4 of this chapter. If you loved me, you would have rejoiced because I'm going to the Father for the Father is greater than I. Two things need to be explained there. In the latter part of verse 28, you would have rejoiced and the Father is greater than I. Why should have the disciples rejoiced at Jesus's physical departure? Well, for one thing, we've already discovered that that just moves us along the time of God's redemptive timetable. And now we're in the time of greater things. That's exciting to be in that time. The fullness of time has come upon us. And why else? Why else do they have We've been rejoicing at this because in Jesus returning to the Father, praise and glory redounds to him. Carson says if they had loved Jesus, they would have perceived that his departure to his own home was his gain and rejoice with him about the prospect. As it is, their grief is an index of their self-centeredness, end quote. The answer to that second question, in what sense is the Father greater than Jesus? Well, it is in this sense. It's not in terms of substance. We believe Father, Son, Holy Spirit, consubstantial, co-eternal, while unending ages run. But in creation and in the new creation, there is function. The Son obeys the Father. The Father sends the Son. The Spirit obeys the Spirit and the Father, and the Father and the Son send the Spirit. It's in that sense of function in terms of the work of creation and the new creation. Verse 29, And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place, you may believe. He said this before in chapter 13, verse 19. And then he says something that needs a little bit of explanation. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. Well, hold on a minute here, Jesus. You said in chapter 12, 31, that the ruler of this world was going to be cast out. Now he's coming? Which is it? Cast out or coming? How do we reconcile that? Well, in the first instance, what Jesus means by Satan being cast out is that Satan will no longer have accusatory access to the throne of God. We spent a lot of time in a previous sermon in that. In the second instance, in Satan coming, the ruler of this world coming, that, Jesus has in view, is at the cross. But, even in that hour of darkness, God was over it and undoing our adversary for our eternal salvation in Christ, and so that he would no longer have access to the throne to justly accuse us. So, some things to put together there. Then Jesus says of Satan, he has no claim on me. I love that. So true, gloriously true, salvificly true, savingly true. Carson says the devil could have a hold on Jesus only if there were a justifiable charge against Jesus. Jesus that death then would be his do in the devil's triumph but in actual fact Jesus's death far from being the sign of his defeat of Satan's hand is the culminating proof as Jesus says that I love the father and I do exactly what my father has commanded me Verse 31, first part, but I do as the Father has commanded me so that the world may know that I love the Father. So that the world may know, so that the world may know. Again, quoting Carson, his choice at this point, the world may think with the devil that Jesus is defeated by his death. It must learn, and not by the spirit, that Jesus is vindicated in his death and that the cross, resurrection, exaltation of Jesus Christ ultimately turn on the commitment of the Son to love and obey his heavenly Father at all costs. One more sentence. Part one of the farewell discourse comes to a conclusion. Jesus says, rise, let us go from here. Where's it all taking place? The upper room, right? So there has been so much ink spilled on this little verse here, but it's really, really simple to understand. Do you ever have somebody over? You're hosting them. I'm going to make the argument here that the farewell discourse continues in the upper room, even though Jesus has said this. So you ever host somebody, and you're having a great time of fellowship conversation, and then your guest says something like this, well, it's probably time that I should be on my way. And that person puts on their coat and puts on their shoes, and you're at the door. And all of a sudden, another hour has passed. That's what's going on here. rise, let us go for it. But they haven't left. They're still there. They're still there. And Jesus communicates even more to them. So if you're trying to reconcile that, pretty easy to reconcile. So what does the help ensure? What does the promise of the Holy Spirit ensure? What is it? Peace. Jesus promises another helper Beloved we are not alone Our Jesus has given us the Spirit the Father in the Son in the Spirit in us What blessed help In the truth, there is for us who believe that we might love Him, that we might love one another in this time of greater things. What blessed experience of our Jesus' presence and love as we follow Him. And what blessed peace that passes all understanding. I want to pray in line with what we've heard this morning. And the prayer comes from Ephesians 3 verses 14 to 19. So bow your heads close your eyes as I pray these words. Heavenly Father. I bow my knees before you from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. That according to the riches of his glory he may grant all of us. to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in our inner being. To what end? So that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith. That we might experience more of Him. That we, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ. that surpasses knowledge, that we may be filled with all the fullness of God. And all God's people said, Amen.
