Well, I'm very glad to see you here. I'd like you to take your Bible and turn to Exodus and the thirty third chapter. Thank you for sticking with me on this little series that I've had the privilege of studying and trying to preach through here in Exodus 33. Tonight is the final night of doing this. I had about a month or so where I could preach about four times and I thought maybe this is a good time to to maybe develop this. And God's God's spoken to me personally many, many times. In the study of this, and I was excited that I'd very much like to to develop a series and preach on this revival. I mean, that that stirs my heart. And that's just 33 just lays it all out. And I got excited about studying and I'll I'll make a confession to you. I did not know exactly what I was getting into when I when I started. It is just it is just very, very full. I told an individual today, Pastor Phil, I was talking with and I said it feels like it's a big elephant that you can't quite get your hands around. It's just it's just all there. And we've tried to go through it a little bit by a little bit. And and as we finish out tonight, I trust that there would be something that the Lord, the Lord God would speak to us about, encourage us about, because we need encouragement in the middle of the week. We always do. We are not of this world. We don't fit in with this world. We need encouragement. I think this will be an encouragement to you tonight. In Exodus 33, I will spare you the review of the entire chapter. Let's just jump to verse 18 and we will finish out verses 18 through 23. Moses is in the middle of praying and he's almost done with his prayer, and he says this, and he said, I beseech thee, show me thy glory. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee. And I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. And he said, Thou canst not see my face, but there shall no man see me and live. And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me now shall stand upon a rock and it shall come to pass while my glory passeth by that I will put thee in a cliff to the rock and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by. And I will take away mine hand and now shall see my back parts, but my face shall not be seen tonight. Let us consider this subject on the glory of God. And we finish tonight our progression of steps in seeing God send revival individually or even corporately at Birch Terrace or across the body of Christ at large. And that is moving from the loss of God now all the way to seeing and experiencing the glory of God. I trust that your heart and your desire that you want in your own life, regardless of anyone else, any other Christian sees the glory of God, that you would want it, that you would seek it. And tonight I want us to look at how God revealed his glory and where God revealed his glory. We're going to get to that all eventually. But even as we begin, what we see here in his prayer is that Moses wants more. If you were here on Sunday night, this is how we finished. Moses wanted more. He wanted more of his God. No matter where you find yourself in your Christian experience, no matter where you find yourself in your walk with God, there's always more. You'll never reach and you'll never plumb the depths of your God. There's always more to be received. There's always more to be gotten. There's always more to be pursued. And I want to examine. Tonight, when Moses asked to see God's glory, because when it comes to revival, asking to see God's glory is the ultimate request. I beseech you, show me thy glory. So tonight, can we notice two thoughts, two headings, the first one is this, the glory of God requested. This is in verse 18 particularly, and then we also look at verse 19. But Moses says, I beseech thee, show me thy glory. I don't know about you, but as I study his as I study his prayer request or his prayer from verse 12 on it, it has this sense of acceleration. It has this sense that it's really moving forward. He's really burdened. God has not really been around. God's removed his presence and his pleasure. And so Moses is praying out to God and he says, Lord, I want the assurance that you're going to go with us again. And in verse number 14, God grants that. And he becomes a little more bold and he says, well, then if that's going to happen, then I want your power to accompany us. And the indication is that God is giving that. So then he takes a step further and he starts to pray for God's people, that they would be seen again as God's people amongst the nations. And God is granting that. And it's like as he keeps praying, it keeps getting answered and he gets more passionate and more energy. It's growing, it's growing and it's growing. And it crescendos with verse 18. Well, then if you've given me all this, well, then let me see your glory. That's what that's what he's going after. Show me thy glory. Before we understand some things, I do want to point out one thing. When he says, show me thy glory, what was he asking to see? Well, many people said many, many different things, but this is basically what it is. He was asking to see the essential being of God. And I know for some of us, we'd say, all right. What was he asking for? The essential being of God, what does that mean? He was wanting to see God without a veil over his eyes, if you will. Can I put it this way? Moses was desiring to see God with his physical eyes. That's a pretty large request. He wants to see God. He wants to see the weightiness of God, the glory of God, the spirit of God with his physical eyes. Let me physically see you now, Lord. What's God's response? He says, I will display my glory to you, Moses, but I will do it in my way. I cannot show and reveal my glory to you the way in which you've requested. It's an impossibility. Not because it was morally wrong for him to ask it, but it was physically unable to be done, because if you look, I think it's first number 20. God says, Thou can't not see my face. For there shall no man see me and live, it may be that if we could actually see God tonight physically with our eyes that got the humanity of the eyes that God's given us, if we could actually see him. It would kill us. Humanity cannot abide the glory of God. The Bible is very clear. We can see the Lord, but it's through a glass darkly. One day we'll be face to face. But now there is this veil even still that we cannot see God physically. That's pretty intense. A God that is so far above us that you see him would cause our mortality to cease. And so that is that's interesting. But what I really want to point out here tonight in the glory of God being requested is really the attitude of the request. Once you see Moses attitude, my point is that this should be your attitude and my attitude as well. When he says, I beseech thee, show me thy glory, what is he what is his attitude behind it? Well, Moses had seen some pretty amazing things. Would you not agree with me on that? And when he was in Egypt, he had seen the plagues. He had seen God use him in mighty, mighty fashion there to the Lord brought Israel out with a mighty hand out of Egypt. They get into the wilderness. They see all sorts of other things. They see he sees the Red Sea parted. Can you imagine that? And the armies of Pharaoh being drowned in the Red Sea, he sees the manna every day, every day, every day. When they needed water out in the middle of the desert, what does God say? There's this large rock. Why don't you strike it and watch what I do? Here comes water gushing forth out of the rock. That doesn't happen automatically. It doesn't happen today. Moses also saw that a bunch of former slaves who had grown up working with their hands and slavery and bondage in Egypt defeat a well-trained army of the Amalekites. That wasn't supposed to happen. Amalek was supposed to wipe them out. God prevailed over the enemies. And even when they finally get to Mount Sinai, really from Exodus 19 up to this point, he has seen really a measure of the glory of God. He's been up in the mountain for 40 days. The Bible says he talked with God face to face or more literally, he talked with God as a friend talks with a friend. He had seen a lot. He had seen a lot of the goodness and the graciousness and the glory of God. And what is his request? I want more. Show me something else, Lord. Show me more of what I have not yet seen. He felt as though he had not really seen God as yet. He hungered for that which he had tasted and he wanted more. When I was in junior high, not many years ago, but when I was in junior high, my family was out in San Diego and we were out there for a week of meetings. My dad was preaching and we met up, of course, spent a lot of time with the young people, teenagers there in the church. And one night after the service, early on in the week, maybe in the first night, Some of the teenagers came to my family and said, hey, we are going we are going to a to a restaurant named Leather Bees. Will you come with us? We said, well, what's that? It is an ice cream place. You have not eaten ice cream till you've eaten Leather Bees. Well, we said, OK, let's do it. So we went with them. And one person told us, now, you want to be very careful when you purchase. You don't want to buy a lot of ice cream. You're going to think you're going to want a lot. But this is not your normal ice cream. This is very rich. It is extremely good, extremely tasty. You're not going to be able to eat it all if you get a lot. So just get a small portion. And they were right. So that's what we did. We got a very small portion. I taste it to my knowledge. This is about the best ice cream I've ever had in my life. It tasted it tasted so, so good there. And I still remember it. But later on that week, my brother and I, we pestered my dad repeatedly throughout the week when we had free time. Can you take us back to Leatherbeast? We want some more of that. And dad finally gave in and sometime during the week we went back and I didn't get a small portion. I got a large portion. I thought this is this is great. Oh, it tasted so good. And I remember going back to one of those young people. I said, hey, listen, I guess what we did. We went back to Leatherby's the other other night and he said, you're kidding me. We go there like twice a year. We can't handle it, but just once or twice a year and you've gone twice in the same week. I said, yeah. Well, obviously, we were leaving San Diego after that week and I knew we had a limited time to be there. And I had and we had tasted it, had found that it was good and we weren't satisfied with that. We wanted more now that in a in a small fashion is what Moses is doing here. He had had a little bit of the taste of the glory of God. And he said that tastes good, but I'm not satisfied. I. Want more of my God, I want more of his glory. He kept asking for more and for more. What Moses had was wonderful. Let's not let's not discount what Moses had had. It was wonderful, but he wanted more. It was not enough for him. He was dissatisfied with what he had experienced and he wanted the more. So I ask you, are you after the more? Are you in the point in your Christian life where you want more, where what you have had of the Lord and his glory is wonderful, but you want more? And may I remind you, there is always more for you. Do you find in your heart this yearning for more? More illumination of the Scriptures, more zeal for the Lord, more love for him, more power from on high. Do you find yourself wanting more of your God? A heart that says, I've tasted some wonderful things, but I crave more. It's like the psalm writer said, Psalm 42, as the heart, the deer pants after the water brooks. So panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? The songwriter who may have been David there in Psalm 42 says, just like that, just like the thirsty deer, the uppermost part of the thirsty deer's mind is water. So uppermost in my thirsting heart is God. I've got to have God and I will only be satisfied when I get more of God, as David did say in Psalm 1715. As for me, I will behold my face in righteousness. I shall be satisfied when I awake. with you, with thy likeness." Other than Moses, if there's anybody who knew God and experienced a great knowledge of God and the glory of God, it was the Apostle Paul. Was it not in the book of 2 Corinthians where Paul talks about, he doesn't mention himself, but everybody knows that he's talking about himself, where how he was caught up into the third heaven, whether in this body or out of the body, I don't know. Then he tries to describe it and he says, whether in this body or out of this body, I don't know. And he's trying to describe what God showed him, the glories of heaven and things that he cannot even re-utter that he heard in his experience. And he's having trouble even explaining what God has shown him, something that you and I have never had. But what does he say in Philippians 3, 10 later on in his life? I want to know him. I want to know the power of his resurrection. That's power, I want to know that. You know, I even want to know the fellowship of the sufferings. Being made conformable unto his death, Paul was not content. Have you reached the point of late where you're content? I mean, lots been going on in your life, lots been going on in your family, and it's not like you haven't had a desire for God. I mean, you're here, even reading your Bible. But have you reached a point where you're content? Have you forgotten that it's wrong to be satisfied with things as they are? The heart that wants revival says, I refuse to be happy with things as they are. I want more. From new believers to the most mature believers in this place, there's more for you. There's always more. Have you forgotten? Have you let it slip your mind, regardless of your age, your physical age, regardless of your experience, regardless what you have seen God do in your life, there's always more. I like what the songwriter said that the song nearer, still nearer. You sing that song and the entire song, it's like I've been near the Lord, but I want to be just a little bit closer. I'll be a little bit nearer. And the final stanza goes like this nearer, still nearer, while life shall last, even till safe and glory, my anchor is cast through endless ages forever, never, never, never. Ever to be nearer, my Savior. Still nearer to thee. The songwriter saying this, that even when I get to heaven, I still will not be satisfied. I still want to get closer to God. That is the heart of revival. I'm not satisfied. I want to be nearer. The attitude of the request. But I see in verse 19 is the attainment of the request. This is this is neat. God answered his prayer. God gave him partially what he had asked. And I want you to see that Moses attains the request, but he attains it in God's way. If you would look at verse number 19 and he said, this is God, I will. He's answering, I will make all my goodness pass before thee. You won't you won't see my glory, Moses. I will make all my goodness pass before thee and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee. And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. God is answering the prayer of Moses, you will see my glory. I will show you my glory, but I'll do it on my terms. I'll do it my way. But I want you to know something, Moses. I am going to reveal my glory to you, but know this. I am doing it because I have graciously chosen to do it. He wanted to make sure that Moses understood. I think it's instructive for us. He wanted to make sure that Moses understood that he would reveal his glory. He would reveal his glory in revival and reviving his own heart, not because Moses forced his hand. Not because Moses somehow manipulated God. But because God in his graciousness chose to revive God in his grace, chose to reveal himself. I think it wise for us to remember as we seek for revival in our life and in our church, God is under no obligation to reveal himself. He said, I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious. After all, he bows to nobody. God is not my servant, I am his. God's spirit is not a genie in a bottle where I can just rub it out, he pops and he has to do my every bidding. Now, please understand, we can desire revival, we can pray for revival, we can seek revival, but we cannot and must not demand revival. God will be gracious to whom he will be gracious, you cannot force God to do anything he doesn't want to do. You cannot manipulate him to do anything he does not desire to do sometimes in our brazenness. And I don't mean our boldness, but in our brazenness with revival or with something else, we can come to God and demand that he do something. And when God does not do it, we get mad and blame him. We forget who God is and who is not God. We also need to remember that the outpouring of the Spirit of God, this reviving hand, God revealing his glory, is a precious gift from God. Now, hear me, it is right to pray for revival. In fact, I think it's a sin not to pray for revival because we don't understand Scripture. It is right to pray for revival. It is right to seek God's face. It is right to humble ourselves before a holy God and cry out for him to give us revival. But we must always understand it is still a gift from a sovereign God, because after all, he is the God who will be gracious to whom he will be gracious. Now. I'm looking at a room full of people who have experienced the lavish grace of God. You have the unbelievable favor of God, and God's favor has been poured out upon you. I think we can be fairly confident when we pray for this gift of revival. God will be gracious. When we come to him. That's the glory of God requested, but now we move on with the glory of God revealed. It was requested, but God chooses to reveal God said he'd be gracious to Moses, so how did he do it? Well, let's look at that. Number one, I see he did it in the passing nature of God. OK, let's look back at verse number 19 again, and he said, I will make all my goodness pass before the. The passing nature of God, God revealed his glory to Moses by displaying his goodness, I've quoted several times throughout this series from Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones. And I want to quote from him one more time as he as he discussed this portion, he said this God's glory is mainly and chiefly manifested to us in and through his goodness. And that in turn means that we are given a manifestation and an understanding of the character of God. All right, so what's going on here? Moses says, Lord, I want to see your glory and God says. OK, my glory is wrapped up in my character. My glory is wrapped up in my nature. I think we would be the same thing like Moses in this case. I think Moses was starting to look for the spectacular. I mean, he'd been granted great things from God and now he wants something even more spectacular, perhaps some dynamic demonstration of the power of God shown there. But God says, Moses, You want to see my glory? You need to understand that seeing my glory is this. You need a fuller knowledge of who I am. You need a fuller, more complete knowledge of my character and my nature. Can I say tonight, dear folks, that the greatest need, the supreme need of your life tonight is to know your God. And the prayer to see the glory of God is the prayer to be revealed to a part of the nature of God that heretofore you haven't seen. The supreme need of your of your heart and your life tonight is not more money. Money to pay the bills, money to make ends meet, that's not the supreme need of your life, it's a need, no doubt, in many people's lives. The greatest thing of your life is not is not a greater relationships, even amongst marriage or amongst your family, though that is often a big need. That's not the greatest thing of your life. The greatest thing of your life is not security financially or emotionally. That's not the greatest thing of your life. A new job is not the greatest thing of your life. The greatest and most supreme need of everyone's life in here is to know God, to know him in a way that we have not known him yet. I'm talking about where God pulls back a little bit more about Himself and shows you what He is like, what He is about, what He loves, what He hates. When God says, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, I think that word all is very important. Moses had seen the goodness of God. Moses had experienced the goodness of God. But God says, now I will make all of my goodness. I will give you something, Moses, that you haven't even seen yet. Do you want to see my glory? This is my glory. Myself. I read just last night from John, chapter two, and that's the story that the first miracle, when Jesus turned the water into wine, I was amazed when I saw this, I'm sure I'd seen it before, but I was thinking about God showing forth his glory and he changes the water into wine. Jesus does. And look at what John to 11 says. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee and manifested forth his glory. And his disciples believed on him. Now, what does that mean? As soon as Jesus turned the water into wine, there was this heavenly glow about him, you know, oh, he's manifesting his glory. That's not what happened. He looked just like you and me. What does this mean at this point in Jesus life, even publicly and amongst his own disciples? There were things that they did not know yet about Jesus. And this this sign that he is the Messiah, this sign that he is from God, that's beginning to be shown more and more that is our is is now beginning to come down the road. When he demonstrated something about himself, the disciples looked around and said, I have not seen that in him. And Jesus manifested forth his glory and it affected and changed his disciples. There was something they had not seen of God before and it changed him. And listen, when you see something of God that you have never seen, it will change you. That's why you can't be satisfied with where you are. Please do not yawn. and decide, I wonder if I should go to Sunday night with pastor going over this, this theology of God and the nature of God, because I have heard it all before. I've been to Bible college. Shame on us. There is always more. And our heart cry should be as we come to the house of God or we come to the Word of God that we say, Lord, show me something that I've never seen. That is revival. And that can be you. Every day of your life. Therefore, don't you dare miss a day with God. As much as lies within you when these doors are open, you are here. I want more. Perhaps God would be gracious upon me tonight and reveal something of Himself that is exactly what I need. When was the last time you prayed for God to show His glory? That's what you're asking for. I want to see something of you I haven't seen. For there's always more. All right, it was it was it was revealed by the passing nature of God. And then number two, it was revealed by the proclaimed name of God. In verse 19, again, he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee. And I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee." Now, this is tied in quite close with the character of God. I don't want to dissect it too much than what it needs to be. Sometimes we talk about a person having a good name. Why does he have a good name? Because he had a good nature that went along with that good name that gave him that good name. So it's very, very closely tied with one another. But there is something I do want to point out for you here. The best way to learn of God is to learn what He says about Himself. To learn what he says about himself, what he calls himself. Did you know that God actually did proclaim his name? It's actually found in chapter 34. And you should be there, so I'd like you to turn to there and look at verse number 5. It says, And the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed by before him and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious. long suffering and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin and will by no means clear the guilty. visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the children's children, unto the third and the fourth generation. And Moses made haste and bowed his head toward the earth and worshipped." Here, God's name was declared. It was proclaimed. And the accompanying nature, His mercy. Moses heard of His holiness. Moses heard of His goodness. Moses heard of His grace. Moses heard of His unbelievable forgiveness. What did it cause him to do? He fell on his face. And you will find that when you study what God has said of himself and you go out that heart cry, Lord, I want to know more of you, God will reveal more of himself that will cause us in revival to fall on our face and worship. That's happened throughout Scripture. We don't have time to examine any of them. Look at Isaiah 6 sometime. What did Isaiah do when he heard the name of the Lord? Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. He fell on his face and said, I am coming apart at the seams. Woe is me. What's the famous revival passage, 2 Chronicles 7, 14, If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek my face, turn from the wicked way, then will I hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Great passage on revival. Do you know the context of that? It's the dedication of the temple. 2 Chronicles chapter 6, Solomon has been praying to God for God's glory to come down and visit that temple. And when you get and check it up sometime, when you get to chapter seven, God's glory comes into the temple. God's glory comes into the temple so much so that the priests cannot even enter into the temple and the people fall on their face in worship. Revelation, chapter one, John, the apostle on Patmos, sees what Jesus looks like today, and it's so terrified him he fell at his feet as one dead. A vision of God and what he is like causes this response in us. There's no there's no horseplay in revival. But anything that you need tonight is wrapped up in the name of God. If you're a condemned sinner, he is Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins. If you need direction, he is the wonderful counselor. If you are oppressed, he is the mighty God. If your life is unstable, he is the everlasting father. If you are fearful or you have turmoil or your home is turbulent, he is the prince of peace. If you are searching tonight, he is the truth. If you are uncertain of eternity, he is the resurrection in the life. If you are persecuted, he is the righteous judge. If you are in darkness, he is the light of the world. If you need to get to God, he is the mediator, the days man and the intercessor. If you are doubting, he is the author and the finisher of our faith. If you need forgiveness, he is the advocate. He is the Holy One, the Lamb of God, the Prince of Life, Lord God Almighty, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, the Word of Life, the Way, the Dayspring, the Morning Star, the Lily of the Valley, the Chief Cornerstone, the Ancient of Days, the Alpha and Omega, the Great I Am. He is the Lord of Kings, the Lord of Hosts, the Lord of Lords, the Lord of all and the Lord over all. And he is everything you could ever need. Why do we turn to everything else but God? When was the last time you prayed and studied and sought the name of God for refuge? When was the last time you sought the name of God for revival? Show me thy glory. All right. Let me tell you who I am. That is the glory of God. And last of all, this was revealed in the place next to God. Did you notice that in verse 21 and following? And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me. And now shall stand upon a rock and it shall come to pass while my glory passeth by that I will put thee in a cliff of the rock will cover thee with my hand while I pass by and I will take away mine hand and now shall see my back parts, but my face shall not be seen. God has a place for those who want to see his glory. God has a place for everyone who wants to know him. In a way, they've never seen him before and it's right next to him. This indicates to me that seeing God's glory is not for the casual Christian. Seeing God's glory is not for the convenient Christian, but seeing God's glory is for anyone who genuinely wants it. Seeing God in revival is for anyone who is dissatisfied with his present level of Christianity. who is craving for more of God, who is willing and who will pay the price to humble himself and clean his own heart, who will draw nigh to God so that God might draw nigh to him. This can be you. In the place next to God. And now for all the typology buffs. Rock of ages cleft for me, let me hide myself in me. I suppose we could draw many parallels to our position in Christ with Moses being hit in the cliff to the rock, the hole in the rock. And it's not my desire to really go into all the parallels of of how this rock pictures Christ in our life. And and again, we can draw parallels to that. But I do want to say that my belief is that Jesus Christ plays a bigger role in revival than what we realize. And I want to close with this passage, if you will turn to John chapter 14. This is the night in which Jesus is betrayed. Glorious passage in John 14, let not your heart be troubled. I'm going and I'll come back. But it's interesting as Jesus begins to talk about seeing the father, is that not what revival is? Seeing God, knowing and sensing that his glory is passing by. Well, it stirred up Philip, as it stirs me up, the possibility of seeing God's glory. Oh, well, John 14, verse eight, Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the father and it sufficeth us. Lord, we will be satisfied if you show us God in his glory. And I think gently, Jesus says unto him, have I been so long time with you and yet has thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father. And how sayest thou then, show us the Father? Jesus' point. You want to see God's glory? Then look at Me. Learn of Me. Have we been so long time with Jesus? Are we so familiar with Jesus that He no longer ceases to move us? Do you want revival? Then study Jesus. Learn of Jesus. And if you pursue the knowledge of Jesus, you'll see the glory of God. Manifest. So how did we get here? You start next is 33 and it's pretty bad. We've moved from the loss of God to the glory of God. How did that happen? Well, there were stages that the people of God went through. That we must go through as well. And we look at those stages. But ultimately, this is what happened. This is how we got here. This is how Moses got here. Ultimately, Moses was no longer satisfied with where he was. Moses was no longer content where the people of God were also. And he wanted more. So how about you? To have revival, get dissatisfied. Seek after God more. And more and more. Until he graciously chooses to reveal himself to you. May God do that. Heavenly Father, as we close tonight, thank you that you have given us instruction and insight into yourself. Lord, it's hard work to learn of you. For you want committed people to seek after you. And I pray, Lord, that you'd raise up many, many folks here. who above all else want more of their God. Lord, be gracious upon this church. Send us revival. In Jesus' name, Amen.
