Exodus 20 verse 7 says, Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. It's really sickening to hear people use the name of Jesus in vain. And it's done so often in so many ways. And I don't hesitate to ask people not to do that around me.
When I worked in an office setting a number of years ago, a professing Roman Catholic lady would use the name of Jesus like a cuss word. But I wasn't able to say anything until she did so loudly and in my presence. And then I asked her not to do that. And I didn't appeal to the third commandment, because most people couldn't care less about the Ten Commandments these days, including professing Catholics and even professing Christians. But I told her that concerning the matter of being disrespectful of my religion, that's the terminology you have to use in this situation, and the fact that our employee handbook explicitly stated that we cannot use offensive language in an office setting, or we couldn't commit religious discrimination in the workplace and offend people in that manner. So in my case, this lady immediately stopped using the name of Jesus that way and everything was fine.
But in another case, I heard a professing evangelical Christian using the name of Jesus in vain. And again, I nicely asked that they not do that around me. He looked at me like I had rocks in my head and said, why not? I said, are you serious? And he was. So I quoted Exodus 20, verse seven, as we read at the beginning of our devotional, thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. He started to argue with me that the name of Jesus wasn't the name of God, but of the son of God. I couldn't help laughing at the absurdity of a professing evangelical Christian, of all things, making that sort of statement.
I said, don't you believe in the incarnation that Jesus is God as John said in John 1 and the word was God? He said, well, yes. And I asked, well, what is the name of the word? He said, well, that's Jesus. And I said, the name of God incarnate is Jesus. And I expected more arguments, but he had a stunned look on his face and said, I never thought of it like that. He went on to say that he said, you know, I thought the name of God was Jehovah. And I explained that God has covenant names. His name has been a progressive revelation and then went to into an explanation of the fact that Jesus is Jehovah. And he said, I've never heard that before. And I didn't say it at the time, but I should have. But that's because he attended a weekly rock concert and pep talk on Sundays instead of attending a Bible-believing, Bible-teaching church where he'd learn sound doctrine.
In this dispensation, we call upon the name of the Lord, and His name is Jesus. The blasphemous abuse of the name of Jesus is sickening and sad, but it's also an obvious evidence of His deity. As much as we hate the abuse of his name, what else would you expect and how else do you explain that phenomenon other than the fact that he is God and that Satan and Satan's children hate him? And so they hate him so much that they spit when they say his name and they use his name in vain. You don't hear people blaspheming the name of Muhammad or Buddha or any other of the false gods, but they'll put the F word in between the name of Jesus and his title, Christ. and it's just horrible the other ways you hear him say his name in vain.
Now, I hope no one listening to me right now is guilty of that terrible sin, but if you are, I urge you to repent and begin thinking of the precious name of Jesus as something to use respectfully and a name to defend and protect, not abuse and blaspheme. Honestly, if you find that difficult, It means you have a spiritual problem. You need to get along with God and pray for Him to remove those foul spirits from your heart and mind.
God's children love the name of Jesus. As Paul wrote in 2 Thessalonians 1.12, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you and he in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. And Colossians 3.17, and whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
