Hello again and welcome to the program. We're here with a little strength for today. We're going to talk about sorrow. The word is in the Bible 70 times and the word sorrow is plural another 22 times. We're going to have a look at how to handle sorrow.
The first time we find the word sorrow is in Genesis chapter 3 and verse number 16, and the last time we find it is in Revelation 21 and verse 4. I like the one in Revelation that says, and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away.
Well, that's in the sweet by and by, but we have to live in the nasty now and now. And all through the scriptures you find people suffered with sorrow.
Nehemiah was a good man, he loved the Lord, and he was sorrowful. We read in Nehemiah chapter two and verse two, he was before the king, and we read, wherefore the king said unto me, why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Now they were not supposed to be sorrowful before the king. Everybody was supposed to be happy.
Nehemiah said, Then I was very sore afraid, and said unto the king, Let the king live for ever. Why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my father's sepulcher, lieth in waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire? Well, as a result of Nehemiah's sorrow, we find that things turned out pretty good in the end.
Job was a good man who was living for the Lord. We read in Job 1, verse 1, there was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was perfect and upright and one that feared God and eschewed evil. He also was one who knew about sorrow. He said in Job 17, 7, mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow.
David was the man after God's own heart, and we read, he said in Psalm 13, 1 to 6, How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord, forever? How long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and hear me, O Lord my God. Lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, lest mine enemies say I have prevailed against him. and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.
But, he said in verse five, I have trusted in the mercy, my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation, I will sing unto the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me. He said, I have reason for sorrow, but I trust in the Lord, I rejoice in my salvation, and someday, he said, I will sing.
Paul the Apostle was a good man. We read of him in Romans 9 and 2, I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. In Philippians 2, he said, for indeed he, that is Aphrodite, was sick, nigh unto death, but God had mercy on him and not on him only. but also on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow."
We need to understand that as we live in this world, we shall have tribulation, Jesus said, and we shall have sorrow. Paul the Apostle said in 1 Thessalonians 4, 13, I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. He didn't say we wouldn't sorrow, but he said, not as others, which have no hope.
When the Lord came into this sin-sick world for us, we read of him in Isaiah 53, 3. He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Well, I like that verse again in Revelation 21, 4. God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away.
Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus.
