Hello again, and welcome to the program. We're here with a little strength for today. John 16, 33, Jesus said in the world, ye shall have tribulation, but he said, be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. We can have peace that passes understanding in spite of the circumstances.
The Lord said we would have tribulation in this world. That word, tribulation, has been translated affliction 17 times, trouble three times. It's been translated anguish, persecution, burden, and to be afflicted each one time. All of these things, or any one of them, can lead us to discouragement.
The first time we have the word discouraged in the Bible is in Numbers 21-4, where it says the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way. And so, what exactly is discouragement? DIS, put in front of the word couragement, DIS is the prefix added to the beginning of a word that means the opposite of. Discouragement is the opposite of courage.
Again, in Numbers 21 verse 4 says the soul of the people was much discouraged. It is referring to God's people as they were wandering in the wilderness. Now it says the soul of the people was much discouraged. We are made up of a body, a soul, and a spirit. The soul is the mind, the will, and the emotions. And so we're not dealing here with a physical problem. When they got discouraged, it had nothing to do with their foot or their arm. It was something to do with the mind, the will, and the emotions.
1 Thessalonians 5.23 says, I pray God that your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless under the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. So discouragement is an emotional thing that is in our mind. We can be discouraged by the path of life, here the people were discouraged because of the way, or we can be discouraged by other people.
In Numbers 32, seven through nine, Moses said, and wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going into the land which the Lord has given them? The spies came back and they discouraged the heart of the people. So to be discouraged means they had to have courage in the first place. The dictionary says courageous means not deterred by danger or pain. Deterred means to discourage someone from doing something by instilling doubt or fear of the consequences.
Discouragement can cause us to quit, to give up, get bitter, or focus on the problems instead of the promises in the word God. Well, seeing that Jesus said that in this world we'll have tribulation, which is affliction and trouble and anguish and persecution and burdens, we need to learn how to handle this situation. As we mentioned, the Bible says in all of it, we can have a peace that passes understanding.
In the programs to come, we're going to be looking at dealing with discouragement before it deals with us, and also dealing with sorrow. The word sorrow is in the Bible 70 times, and it's totally different from discouragement. We've quoted that Jesus said, you shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. Well, we've only quoted the last half of the verse. Let me read the whole verse. These things have I spoken unto you, that ye might have peace in the world, ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
We can have that peace that passes understanding.
