We look again to Psalm 119, picking up on the undefiled and their desire. In verse 4, we were confronted with a heavenly desire. Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently. He who has his heart turned toward heaven has now a holy desire birthed in his heart by the word of the Lord and by the presence of God. In verse 5 we read the expression of this holy desire, O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes. A similar expression is in verse 10, With my whole heart have I sought thee, O let me not wander from thy commandments. This desire is for one's ways to be aligned with God's ways, for one's will to be in agreement with God's will. O that God's ways were my way! O that there was a heart within me that would always obey him." This verse reveals not only the desire for God and His holiness, but the ability within man for sin and unholiness. Within the heart of every born-again believer is both the new man and the old man. In verse number five, of Psalm 119, the psalmist admits the weakness and the sinfulness of his flesh. May God help me, may God help you to cry out in humility for God to crucify our flesh, to control our and keep within us a holy desire, O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes. And now we come to the healthy desire of the undefiled. 6. Then shall I not be ashamed when I have respect unto all thy commandments." The holy desire to have our ways in full agreement with God's ways leads us to a healthy fearing and following of the Lord. We have a healthy respect for the Word of God. You know, you can judge a person's relationship with the Lord by their relationship with His Word. If your Bible means but little to you, then your Lord means little to you. The Word of the Lord, we should have respect unto all God's commandments. Why? That we might be kept from shame. Then shall I not be ashamed. When? When shall we not be put to shame and confusion? When we have respect unto the commandments of the Lord, that we might be kept from sin. We have respect unto all God's commandments. The word respect here means to scan, that is, to look intently upon something, and it implies that you regard that which you look at with great pleasure, with favor, or with care. We could say it like this, the Word of God has both your attention and your affection when you respect it. you value it greatly, you esteem it highly. When a man's ways are fixed and established and focused on keeping God's ways and obeying God's Word, it will produce a healthy respect for the Scriptures, and it will in turn keep him from sin and keep him from shame. I step back from this verse. I think about the song written by Sister Abigail Miller, which says, Goodbye, my way, and hello, God's way. Goodbye, empty world. Hello, Jesus love. Goodbye, self, and goodbye, sin. Hello, peace and joy within. Goodbye, my way. Hello, gods. The sad truth is that today most people say goodbye to God and hello to the world, the flesh, and the devil. Men are closing their Bibles. opening themselves up to a life of sin and regret, to a life of shame and reproach. May God help us to have respect unto all His commands.
