With our Bibles open again to Psalm 119, we have taken a couple of weeks to introduce the Psalm and then our text in the first stanza. of verses 1-8, so we get down today to the exposition. Now our study is a life devoted to God and His Word, with a special emphasis upon the blessing of the undefiled. Let me say this one more note of preparation, all men by nature are defiled and out of the way. As contained in Romans 3, 12, Psalm 14, verses 1-3, Psalm 53, verses 1-3, and Isaiah 53, verse 6, we have all turned aside, gone back, and are completely out of the right way. We are unacceptable, unprofitable in God's sight, and in need of redemption. We need the blood of Christ to cleanse us, to wash away the defilement of our sin, purge our hearts, put our feet upon the rock, establish our goings, set us in the right way, and the Holy Ghost places us in Christ the moment we believe upon the Lord Jesus, and we are then in the way. And so now we draw personal applications for the Christian, the blessed man, the blessed woman who has chosen the way of the undefiled. We note the undefiled and their direction. Verses 1, 2, and 3. Blessed are the undefiled in the way who walk in the law of the Lord. A man is either walking in the direction that God is leading him, or he is walking in his own direction. The path of the undefiled's feet is the word of God, the law of the Lord in verse 1. As they walk in the way, they stay in God's word. Yea, God's word is that established path for His children to walk in. Those who stay within the boundaries of God's wonderful book will be able to enjoy all the blessings of God's wonderful book, the path of the undefiled. It is a path of love, of joy, of peace, of victory, of virtue, of glory, of happiness, and of holiness. It is reserved for those who walk in the law of the Lord. God's Word, according to Psalm 119, 105, is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. But not only the path of their feet, the pursuit of their heart. Verse 2, Blessed are they that keep his testimonies and that seek him with the whole heart. The pursuit of the heart of the undefiled is what truly determines the path of their feet. as we walk in the law of the Lord, we keep His testimonies. Our lives are marked by a careful and watchful obedience to the Word of God. The word keep here, the Hebrew word means to guard, to protect, to maintain and obey, as does the English word keep. But their lives are further marked by an intense longing for God's person. They follow Him with the whole heart. They desire to know God. They seek to know God. And within the heart, there is the recognition that we must follow Him. if we would find Him. And when we find Him, we can fellowship with Him. Why? Because we fear Him, we love Him, we need Him. There is the desire to be near to God. We just cannot live without our Lord. We need Him, and with all of our heart and soul, we follow hard after Him. the purity of their life. Verse 3, they also do no iniquity, they walk in His ways. Just as the path is determined by one's pursuit, so the purity of life springs from the pursuit of their heart as well. If you seek after that which is unholy and that which is ungodly and unrighteous and unbecoming to a Christian, then you will not be undefiled. You will be unholy ungodly. But on the other hand, if you seek God with the whole heart, then your life will be marked by purity and godliness. There'll be purity in your practice. There'll be no iniquity. And the word do here means to do or make systematically and habitually. So I am not preaching sinless perfection, that is, a perversion of the Scriptures, and 1 John chapter 1 underlines it, puts a bold exclamation behind it, and states it to be false doctrine, and crosses it out, and says, If we say that we have not sinned, we make him, we make God a liar, and the truth is not in us. But purity of practice, purity of purpose, they walk in His ways. We walk in the fear of the Lord, verse 1. We walk in fellowship with the Lord, verse 2. And we walk in faithfulness to our Lord, Psalm 119, verse number 3.
