Are we chasing sin?

The Apostle James tells us if we break one of the ten commandments than we are guilty in God's eyes of breaking all of them. Paul spoke about sin abounding all around us. Now John is here telling us that the active pursuit of sin is a very bad thing, and that it means we aren't saved. This leads us to the question, are we chasing sin or is it chasing us?
