we'll get into Psalm 107. I'm going to give you a little bit of background concerning Psalm 107 and concerning the first few verses, but I want you to notice how it blends in with the other Psalms and also with the book Pentateuch. The first five books of the Bible is called the Pentateuch. You've got five books in the Psalms. What we start with in Psalm 107 is the fifth book, or the final book, of the Psalms. The first five books of the Bible, which is the Pentateuch, that's where Moses wrote. The law was given. In the five books of the Psalms, if you were to go to the fourth book, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, you go to the fourth book, Numbers is the book of the wilderness journey. Book 4 of Psalms begins with Psalm 90 and that's with the children of Israel, that generation in the desert in the journey. What you find on Psalm 105, Psalm 106, actually Psalm 106, you remember how we went over last week, that Psalm ends, or actually entails, and it actually ends the fourth book, just like Numbers, it ends with all the sins of Israel in the wilderness. Deuteronomy is talking about the law and the land, which is what we find in book five in Psalms. Psalm 107, the people are in the land. It's amazing, there are so many little things like that in the Word of God that we are apt not to see, when we don't reflect and meditate upon the whole word of God, and we just kind of focus in. It's good to focus in, but it's also good to see that bird's eye view. There's a lady by the name of Frances Havergale. You might have heard her, she was a hymn writer back in the 1800s. She died at a young age, I think about 42 years old. She was quite proficient in the word. She knew Latin, she knew Greek, she knew Hebrew. She had memorized the Psalms, she memorized Isaiah. She had memorized most of the New Testament. Now that was by the age of 42. Don't that put us to shame? Think about that. That's a lot of scripture that she had memorized. Here's something that she wrote. She said, if I could write as I would about the goodness of God to me, the ink would boil in my pen. Boy, she was passionate about God and his word. It was quite amazing because she started writing when she was about four years old. Became more in poetry by the time I think she was around seven years old. Wrote hundreds of hymns, and some of those hymns that she wrote, you remember the song, Take My Life and Let It Be? Consecrated Lord to Thee, like a river glorious, I gave, I gave my life to Thee. Here's a lady, Let me tell you, she was saturated with the Word of God. Ladies, you ought to be saturated in the word of God, but that don't mean men shouldn't be. We all should be. We should be like Francis Havergill, at least in studying God's word, memorizing God's word. In all of the attributes of God, God is infinite in all his ways, but in all the attributes of God, what we see, he is good. Now think about that, the wrath of God, when God's wrath is shown forth, he's still a good God. When he punishes people, he disciplines his children, he is still a good God. Everything that he does is good. Even when we're going through difficulties in life, even when we see something what is bad, God is good. And we, as God's people, must declare the goodness of God. Psalm 107, I want you to notice verse 1. O give thanks unto the Lord. Why? For He is good. And then notice, for, or because, His mercy endures forever. And then it says, let the redeemed. Everyone in here has made a profession of faith. Let the redeemed, that's us, God's people back in the Old Testament, let the redeemed of the Lord say so. Whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy. God had brought his people back out of exile. Here they're in the land, so let the redeemed, whom God redeemed from Babylon, let them say so, whom he has redeemed from the hand of the enemy, and gathered them out of the lands from the east, from the west, from the north, and from the south. It is not good enough just to be grateful. Notice what verse two says, let the redeemed of the Lord say so. It's not good enough just to be grateful, The Word of God is telling us we need to say so. Listen to just a few Psalms. Just go over about four or five. Look in Psalm 25. In Psalm 25 and down in verse 8, there we read, good and upright is the Lord. Therefore will He teach sinners in the way. Look in Psalm 86. Psalm 86 And down in verse 5, For thou, Lord, art good and ready to forgive, plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon you. In Psalm 106, verse 1, Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good. for his mercy endures forever. That word mercy is chesed. Remember what chesed is? It's God's love, it's his mercy, it's his loving kindnesses. They endure forever. Look in Psalm 118. In Psalm 118 and down in verse one, oh, give thanks unto the Lord. Why? For he is good because His mercy endures forever. That's God's steadfast love. It goes on and on and on and on. Here the word of God is exhorting us to give him thanks. Not just to have a thankful heart, that's important, but say so. Did you get that in verse two? Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. And for that cause, we want to give thanks unto God tonight. And for that cause, for those who are tuning in on Facebook, we're gonna let you sing at home. But we'll be cut off if we sing on Facebook. So let us sing unto the Lord, and we're gonna give thanks. So I want you to take your hymnal, and turn to page 576. Can somebody within five words give me something that we need to give thanks for, for what he has done for us? Huh? Forgiveness of our sins. We're all in agreement. You know, He is faithful. Huh? Freedom to worship. That is something we shouldn't take for granted. We're going to be with Him someday. Forever and ever and ever and ever. For His said is forever and ever and ever. Okay. The mercies come every morning. They're new every day. His word. So rich. His grace. Daily provisions, you know that, we think that's not a spiritual thing, we don't think, but it does because it comes from Him. Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights in whom there is no variable, nor a shadow of turning. Every good gift comes from God. Did you, were you able to eat today? Yeah, that's a good gift from God. Were you able to sleep in a comfortable bed? You know what, that's a gift from God. The things we don't think about a lot of times. There's so much to give thanks for. Look at the page right before that, 575. I think this is one, I'm not sure if we sang it as congregation. If we struggle, we struggled. If we don't, we don't. We'll just sing it, okay? Oh, I like that song. Y'all done good. Y'all done good. Look over on page 625. 625, I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever. Alright, the next song we're going to sing is found on page 91. Page 91, surely, goodness and mercy, I think you know the rest. Page 171, 171. Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus. So turn to page 582. That's a good little chorus. Good way to end the service. It's still not quite completely dark outside, so I'm going to get you out before it's totally dark if I don't pray too long, so let's pray. Father, we just thank you because you've told us to thank you and our hearts rejoice in thanking you for your goodness and your loving kindnesses that are new every day. Lord, we want to say so. We want to say so in song, and we want to say so in our speech in sharing the gospel with the lost and dying world. And Lord, though the powers that be that are in government seats and places, we pray for them, but Lord, we pray that your will be done in them. We pray that you turn wickedness, make it turn astray and get lost and get gone and Lord may your righteousness reign on this earth. That you might be exalted, that we might continue to have liberty to give you thanks and praise and to worship you in spirit and in truth all of our days. Lord, we pray for those who have sickness. We think of Sister Sylvia and the surgery. We pray for healing there, for my mom's surgery coming up. Lord, for those who have aches and pains, and just about everybody here does of some sort, we pray your healing hand upon them. We pray you comfort them. We pray you strengthen them. For those that are going through problems with the legal system, immigration, whatever it might be, Lord, We pray that you open up a mighty door that no man can shut, and that you would be glorified in freeing your people. We want you to be honored and uplifted, so we pray that you guide us by your Spirit into all truth, to always magnify your name and give you the glory for all that's said and done for Christ's sake. Amen. And you are dismissed.
