Exodus 4.10 says, And Moses said
unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore,
nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant, but I am slow of
speech, and of a slow tongue. It may sound funny to our ears
today to refer to Jesus as Lord of the Tongue and brings to mind
like Lord of the Rings or something like that, but it's a fact. Jesus
is our creator and he's the maker of all things. Our bodies are
in a fallen state and subject to the curse, but Jesus made
our bodies and we are accountable for how we use our brain, our
hands, our feet, and yes, even our tongues. And that's basically
what the Lord said to Moses in response when Moses said, oh
Lord, I'm not eloquent. I am slow of speech and of a
slow tongue. Exodus 4, 11 and 12 then tells
us, and the Lord said unto him, who hath made man's mouth? Or
who maketh the dumb or deaf or the seeing or the blind? Have
not I, the Lord, Now, therefore, go, and I will be with thy mouth,
and teach thee what thou shalt say." Now, many have made much
of the idea that Moses had some sort of speech impediment. I've
even heard some say that he had a stutter like Mel Tillis, or
King George VI, or Porky Pig. Yes, I've heard a preacher repeatedly
imitate Porky Pig when reading Moses' words in our texts. I don't see any evidence that
Moses had such limitations, and I don't say that to discourage
anyone from trying to overcome impediments or lisps or stutters. It can be done. I've told the
story that when I was a child, my mother helped me to slow down,
think, and speak clearly to overcome my stutter in early childhood. Mel Tillis overcame his stutter
by singing. And Porky Pig is a cartoon character,
so his stutter isn't actually real. But what the text plainly
shows is that Moses lacked the will to allow God to use his
tongue. Regardless of whether it was
from a lack of confidence or simply the desire not to be appointed
leader, it comes from the will. And there have been many people
who have voiced the words, I believe Jesus is the Lord, only to refuse
to allow Jesus to control their tongues. Some call Jesus their
Lord but refuse to preach the gospel to lost souls. Others
call Jesus Lord but resist any opportunity to speak up for righteousness
and truth on issues like abortion or sodomy or gun control. A lot
of professing Christians will say, well, I'll leave that to
the pastors and deacons. And many professing Christians
truly believe that only so-called clergy are supposed to do that
sort of thing. Of course, in such cases, they
are willingly ignorant of the clear teaching of the Bible that
all Christians are ministers of the gospel and of the truth
and of righteousness. Not all are pastors, not all
are deacons serving in leadership, but all of us are to use our
God-given tongues to praise Him, preach His gospel, and declare
the truth of His word. Jesus made the tongue and gave
us his word so that we can know what to say when speaking. As
Proverbs 16.1 says, the preparations of the heart in man and the answer
of the tongue is from the Lord. If you will make Jesus Lord of
your life and commit the use of your tongue to his glory,
Then you'll learn his word you'll memorize scripture and you can
say with the Prophet Isaiah and Isaiah 50 verse 4 The Lord God
hath given me the tongue of the learned that I should know how
to speak a word in season to him that is weary He wakeneth
morning by morning. He wakeneth mine ear to hear
as the learned and Every man and woman who ever lived will
either use that tongue to confess Jesus Christ is Lord in this
life or they will bow and and do so at the judgment. As we're
told in Philippians 2, 10 and 11, that at the name of Jesus,
every knee should bow of things in heaven and things in earth
and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
Even the most rank unbeliever will use that tongue in their
very last act before being cast into a lake of fire to confess
Jesus Christ as Lord, thus demonstrating Jesus as Lord of all, He is Lord
of the tongue, and we ought to use our tongue to please Him
and to bring Him glory.
