Thank you, Mr Chairman. In this
report, I will outline the work of the Operations Department
during 2021 and will also share some more recent developments.
I hope it will encourage all of you present and help you as
you pray for this work. As I wrote in my last report
for the quarterly record, I was encouraged recently when reading
a report on public attitudes in the United Kingdom towards
the Christian faith. Second only to growing up in
a Christian family, reading the Bible was the main way in which
respondents said that they had come to follow the Lord Jesus
Christ. It may be that some of you have
been told that people do not often come to faith by reading
the Bible. You may even have been told that
Bible distribution is not worthwhile. Well, if you hear such a claim
again, think of this large survey, which strongly indicates that
the opposite is true. Reading the Bible is one of the
primary means used of the Holy Spirit by which people come to
faith. The work that the Society is
engaged in, the work that you support, is therefore a vital
and worthwhile work. Our motto is the Word of God
among all nations, and we seek to distribute the scriptures
as widely as possible. Last year, through the Society,
the Lord enabled 4.3 million scriptures and scripture items
in 38 languages to be distributed to recipients in 108 countries.
Full lists of the languages and the countries can be found in
the annual report quarterly record. Over 1.6 million Bibles, scripture
portions and scripture items were granted free of charge to
institutions and individuals at home and abroad. These are
recipients who have passed our grant application process and
they include missionaries, evangelists, pastors and ministers, churches,
prisons, schools, care homes, military establishments and immigration
removal centres. Let me read you an email that
we received recently from a prison chaplain in Yorkshire, which
is typical of many such emails sent to us. We had supplied the
prison with various Bibles, scripture portions, and scripture items
for distribution to the prisoners. This is what he wrote. Hi, thanks
so much for your very kind donation of all the items you sent us
at the prison. I have to say it was a bit like
Christmas, or I felt a bit like the child in the sweet shop.
There are things in boxes you sent that have already gone out
to the guys, such as bookmarks, daily light devotionals, Bible
journeys, puzzle books, and Bibles. and I've already had other guys
asking where I can get one from. I will evaluate all the bits
you sent and see which will be most useful for us and if it
is then okay with you, I will get back to you and let you know
what else will be of help to us. In a place where people are
used to being told no, you can't have that, we don't have the
funds for that, it was so nice for a change to be able to say
yes, you can have that, and that there are people out there who
do care about you and want you to have a chance to read a Bible,
or yes, you can have a nice bookmark, and not just a piece of toilet
roll to mark the page in the book you are reading. This was
such a blessing for me yesterday to be able to go and give these
things out and I just want to say a massive thank you for enabling
me to do this. Blessings and prayers. And then
it was signed by the prison chaplain. A few examples of larger grants
that were awarded during 2021 are as follows. 6,500 Bibles in the Sinti language
sent to India, 6,500 Portuguese Bibles and New Testaments sent
to Mozambique, a Portuguese-speaking country in southern Africa, 3,000
English Bibles sent to Botswana, 7,000 Spanish New Testaments
sent to Chile, 4,200 English Bibles and other scripture items
to Nigeria, and details of some other large grants are included
in the quarterly record. All such grants, whether they
be large or small, are sent out carefully, and more importantly,
prayerfully, in the confidence that the Lord will use these
copies of his word to accomplish that which he pleases. We also
distribute the Holy Scriptures by selling copies, often at heavily
discounted prices. Most items we sell will eventually
be given away free of charge on the mission field, here in
the UK or overseas. The total number of Scriptures
and Scripture items sold worldwide in 2021 was 2.7 million, and
of these, 1.5 million were under license to other publishers.
As you would expect, the COVID-19 situation continued to impact
the operations work of the Society during 2021 in various ways,
as it had done in 2020. But again, we can testify that
the Lord caused the work to prosper despite these difficulties. Regarding
the public scripture display campaigns, I'm pleased to report
that the pilot project which I mentioned last year to display
scripture posters in bus shelters was successful and we're therefore
planning for 2023, for the first time, a national bus shelter
scripture display campaign rather than a railway station campaign. So please look out for this form
which most of you or all of you should have received with your
quarterly record in which you can consider sponsoring a poster
to be displayed in your area and the bookings do need to be
made by the end of this month if possible please. Please pray
that there will be no hindrance to the display of scripture posters
on bus shelters as there has been some hindrance in the railway
stations and pray that the Lord will bless the project. In 2021,
the UK Auxiliaries of the Society were responsible for circulating
over 19,000 scriptures and scripture items. The vast majority were
granted to prisons, schools, hospitals, and care homes. This
included over 5,000 Bibles and 1,600 New Testaments. And I also
would like to record our thanks for the many Auxiliary Committee
members who give their time to pursue the Society's aim in their
local regions. This year, several of the Auxiliaries
have been very busy distributing the Platinum Jubilee Bibles.
So far, 40,000 copies of this special Bible have been distributed,
many through the Auxiliaries and others through churches and
individuals. Let us pray for these children
who have received these Bibles and their families. Perhaps many
of them will be led to look again at their new Bibles as they consider
the death of that one who was commemorated by those Bibles. Last year, we were present at
various conferences and events throughout the UK, and we were
glad that we could hold a normal AGM after the restrictions of
2020. In March this year, we held an open day at William Tyndale
House, which was well attended and that many of you will have
been present for. And as has been said, just two
days ago, we held a wonderful text and translation conference
at William Tyndale House. For those of you who were not
able to attend, it was a very blessed and useful and encouraging
time, and we plan to release audio and video recordings on
our website in due course. I'd like to thank each member
of the Operations Department in London for their hard work
during 2021. Without them, the work which I've described would
not have been completed. Our warehouse manager, Mr Gary
Hayes, will soon be retiring after many years of faithful
service to the society. We appreciate him and his work
and he'll be difficult to replace, but we will soon be looking for
a warehouse supervisor to take over from him. It is a sober
thing that two brethren associated with the department have been
called home since the last AGM. Our former sales representative
to the retail trade, Mr John Tennant, who passed away in December,
and the most committed volunteer, Mr Jude D'Souza, who passed away
in June. We miss them greatly, but are
comforted to know that for them it is better by far. I hope this
report concerning the work of the Operations Department has
been helpful. May the Lord continue to bless the Society as we all
work together to circulate the Holy Scriptures for the glory
of God and the salvation of men. Thank you.
