Mr. Chairman, dear members, supporters
and friends of this society. These annual occasions provide
us with opportunities to give thanks and glory to God for all
that he has done in the life of this society. When I stood
here a year ago, I was telling you of plans for the recruitment
of a new General Secretary, and yet none of us knew at that point
how the Lord would work. But he has graciously provided
a man, I believe, evidently prepared for this work in my esteemed
brother, Mr. Jonathan Arnold. He has also
provided Mr. Matthew Vogan to replace Jonathan
as editorial director. And he has also united the new
management team together very quickly in a mutual desire to
support the general committee in taking forward this vital
work in the same tradition based upon the same Biblical and Reformation
principles that are laid down in our Constitution of 1831. We certainly do not take these
great blessings for granted. I would like to personally thank
you each for your prayers during the two and a half years when
we had no General Secretary and each of us Directors had to assume
additional responsibilities. With the pandemic and a major
IT systems project going on at the same time, it was certainly
an intense period. But we proved once again that
gracious promise, thy God hath commanded thy strength. I would
like to thank all the staff of the society, but particularly
the staff in my own department for all their help and support
over the past year. It is much appreciated. Two members
of the Resources Department retire this autumn. Mr. John Edwards,
who is behind much of the work behind these Annual General Meetings
over the years, has recently retired from his full-time role
as Executive PA, although he does hope to continue working
for us two or three days a week for another 18 months or so.
Mr. Ian Doxey, our Facilities Manager,
is retiring fully from the work of the Society at the end of
November, after the remarkable period of 42 and a half years
working for this Society. We wish both of these dear brethren
the Lord's richest blessing. 2021, as you will remember, started
as a challenging year, with the effects of the pandemic still
with us. But gradually as the year progressed, we were able
to move into a more business-as-usual mode. Throughout the pandemic,
the Lord mercifully spared our staff from serious illness, for
which we are deeply thankful. In October 2021, we completed
the implementation of the new Ex-Ledger Financial System, a
project which had started during the early stages of the pandemic.
We moved our Australian, Canadian and US branches onto the system
last autumn. We give thanks to the Lord for
this, but also to our hard-working staff in each of those branches,
who went more than the extra mile to achieve what we achieve. We have now moved into a new
phase of refining our use of the Ex-Ledger system and redeveloping
our financial procedures in order to more fully reap the efficiency
and reporting benefits that we intended when we bought the system.
Turning briefly to the Society's financial results for 2021, more
detail can be found, as usual, in the annual report quarterly
record distributed to you which was circulated in August, and
also in the four trustees' annual reports and financial statements,
2021, which are available on our website or by calling the
office. In summary, the Society's worldwide operating surplus for
2021 was 1.437 million, which is an improvement of 1.49 million
on 2020. Largely attributable to increased
legacy income, up 1.162 million, and increased sales income, which
remarkably was up £193,000. Expenditure was more or less
stable, increasing by just £64,000 over that year. After adjusting
for investments and foreign currency gains, the net increase in the
society's assets in 2021 was 1.499 million. and the society's cash liquidity
position remained healthy throughout 2021 and into 2022. And that
is a great blessing, because if those of you that are in business
will know, if you're constantly focusing on cash flow, it's a
considerable distraction to the operations of the organization.
And so we're thankful the Lord has given us enough cash flow
for that not to be a continual and daily and weekly worry. I'm thankful to report that once
again the Society has received an unqualified audit opinion
from Moore Kingston Smith LLP following a rigorous audit and
we're therefore happy to recommend Moore Kingston Smith LLP again
to the membership today for reappointment for a further year. I do not
intend to take up your time this morning with going through the
detailed financial matters in the annual report, but I commend
it to you for your reading, if you haven't already, and for
approval later in the meeting. We had some very recent, very
encouraging news when, unexpectedly, the Charity Commission sent us
£550,000 suddenly from the closure of another trust. which is very helpful given the
low level of legacy income that we have received so far this
year. And we see this again and again, the Lord's wisdom in the
timing and indeed the balancing of the financial provision as
we have seen over so many years. Those of us responsible for the
stewardship of the society's financial resources feel a great
need of wisdom, particularly to maintain a right scriptural
balance between faith and prudence, both of which the Lord Jesus
Christ spoke about in his ministry. The General Committee will shortly
be reviewing, therefore, and updating the financial plan for
the period 2023 to 2027, if the Lord will, with a particular
emphasis this year on how we fund staffing for the medium
to long term. As I reflected on the Lord's
gracious provision for the society in 2021, and so far in 2022,
in personnel, in finance, in enduring strength and grace given,
in gracious encouragements that we do not labour in vain in the
Lord, and in so many other ways, these well-known words from Romans
8 were impressed upon my mind. What shall we then say to these
things? If God be for us, who can be
against us? He that spared not his own son,
but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also
freely give us all things? He has promised, and we should
not be surprised when he fulfils his promises. So in this spirit
of humble confidence and gracious dependence upon the Lord we continue.
and seek to continue to look to him for all our resources,
not least those upcoming staffing needs that our General Secretary
has already alluded to. Please pray that the Lord will
be preparing and constraining those who he intends to work
for this society in years to come. We covet your continual
and earnest prayers for the Lord's work. that he might see fit to
continue to use this society in some small way for his glory
and for the extension of his kingdom rather than pray for
us. Thank you.
