Much Ado About Mary

In this text, we come face to face with the great divide between biblical revelation and Roman Catholic tradition. According to RC tradition, Jesus had no brothers. This text (as well as others) says he did. According to RC tradition, Mary has special access and efficacy with Jesus. According to this text, she does not. Mary, blessed as she was to be the chosen one to bear the Messiah, did not secure by that privilege any special audience with Jesus. When she wanted to talk to him, he replied: "Who is my mother and my brothers?" He goes on to reveal that all those who do the will of God are Christ's brothers, sisters and mothers.
