Exodus 19, 19 says, And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. Now this is not typical for believers today, nor was it in the time of Moses. Sinful man cannot stand in the glory of God's presence. For that reason, most of the appearances of Jesus before men involved Jesus being incognito as a man. And this is described in various places in scripture when he came in his incarnation in places like Philippians chapter two. And we've discussed this before, so those who have followed along in these About Jesus devotionals are fully aware of what we call theophanies. If you're not sure what we're talking about, we encourage you to go back and listen from the beginning of our About Jesus devotional playlist. But the Lord Jesus did appear to Moses in his glory and was shown that Moses was actually transfigured into a glorified state temporarily. He was given a special dispensation, as it's called, in order to appear in God's presence without dying, just dropping dead or being incinerated by his glory. We'll discuss this later when we come to Exodus chapter 34. But one thing we know about this special dispensation given to Moses is that it included personal conversations with the Lord. Moses talked to Jesus face-to-face, one-on-one. And I love this next verse in Exodus 19, verse 20. And the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai on the top of the mount, and the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mount, and Moses went up. It reminds me when I was a kid, my mom would come out on the front porch and she'd call us home for lunch or dinner. There were no cell phones or anything like that. Mom would just yell, boys, time for supper! She couldn't even see us sometimes. She didn't even know which end of the block of our neighborhood we were, but we'd hear her voice. We knew her voice. We came home for supper. I miss those days. But I've never heard the voice of Jesus. And I won't argue with anyone over the fact that anyone claiming to have heard the actual voice audibly of Jesus, if they're on some YouTube video or out on some other social media post or podcast, they're just lying. That's all there is to it. But I do know his voice. And if you are one of his sheep, then you too know his voice. How do I know that? Jesus said so in John 10 four. And when he put forth his own sheep, he goeth before them and the sheep follow him for they know his voice. And right now, his voice is an inaudible voice that we hear in our mind when we read his words in the Bible. When we're reading with faith and understanding. That is the only voice of Jesus that we know and hear at this time. People claiming to have heard the audible voice of Jesus are either deluded or they're deceivers bearing false witness. And when I hear such claims in a conversation with somebody, I just stop them and interrupt them or walk away. I'll tell them I don't believe them and nothing they can say will change my mind because I believe they are contradicting God's words with their claim. In this dispensation, the only voice we hear is the inaudible voice of God's word speaking to us. And we know when a believer hears the voice of the Lord in the words of Jesus in John 10, 27, 28, because Jesus said, my sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me. And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. But Moses was given the ability and opportunity to hear Jesus' voice audibly. Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. And one day, you and I will have that same type of conversation with God. We don't hear from God audibly, and I'll ignore any messages sent to me trying to convince me otherwise for the reasons I already stated. But one day, we will have an audible, real conversation with God. And this reality is explained to us in 1 Corinthians 13, 12. For now, we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then shall I know even as also I am known." Be saved and ready because our day is coming when we will see Jesus face to face and we will hear His voice.
163 The Voice of Jesus (Exodus 19:19) Our Daily Greg
As we read of Moses hearing God with "a voice", we consider the reality that while we do not hear God's voice audibly in this lifetime, the time will come when we absolutely WILL hear the voice of Jesus!
