Proverbs 20 verse 10 says, diverse
weights and diverse measures, both of them are a like abomination
to the Lord. We discussed the ill effects
of diverse weights and measures on this world system when it
comes to buying and selling and when it comes to our money system
in the previous proverb devotional. But now let's think of this in
spiritual terms. Think diverse weights and diverse
measures. Both of them are alike abomination
to the Lord. God is the law giver. He sets
the standard. He established that standard
that men must live up to. And he gave his standard to us
in simple terms. Anybody able to understand this
law then is held accountable for any violations of that law. We call this the Ten Commandments.
God's law shows man his sin, and his need of salvation. And
as soon as we violate one of God's laws, we are guilty before
God. James 2.10 says, For whosoever
shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is
guilty of all. Our sin is against a holy, infinite,
eternal God. And any sin makes a man guilty
before God with no hope of ever paying for that sin, let alone
all the other sins we commit. No amount of works can add up
to pay for a single sin when the just payment for sin against
an infinite, eternal God must be of infinite value. It's not humanly possible for
us to ever pay for the first sin or any single sin that we
commit. We are finite beings. Our works
are of a finite value. Now, no matter how many you pile
up, Left to ourselves, we are hopeless. So our only hope is
for the infinite God himself to provide the payment. And he
did just that in the person of Jesus Christ, who shed his holy,
divine blood in death on the cross, and then demonstrated
his power and authority over life and death by rising from
the dead. But when religions tell you that
you can be saved by doing a certain number of good works, they are
presenting a false system, false weights and measures. They are
belittling the weight of sin, and they are pretending to measure
sin whenever it is in reality immeasurable. Such religion is
an abomination to the Lord. Anyone saying they believe they
are a good person is guilty of presenting a false weight and
measure of their own sin. And our proverb makes clear that
diverse weights and diverse measures, both of them are alike abomination
to the Lord. We are saved by the work that
Jesus accomplished. We are not saved by our works. We are saved by his works. Jesus
of Nazareth made full payment as the infinite God in human
flesh, dying in our place on the cross. That's called the
vicarious atonement. No other payment is available
because no other payment is even possible. Titus 3, 4-7 explains,
But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward
man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done,
but according to his mercy he saved us by the washing of regeneration
and renewing of the Holy Ghost, which he shed on us abundantly
through Jesus Christ our Savior, that, being justified by his
grace, We should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal
life. God established the weights and
measures of the law as the standard. The law is holy. The law is perfect. We are not. The law shows us
that. Man violated God's standard and
he must die. But God Himself died in our place
and will save all who will fall at His feet for mercy by faith
in that gospel. And that's the meaning of the
very well-known verse, part of Romans Road to Salvation, Romans
6.23. Think through as you read that
again. For the wages of sin is death. We've earned it. But the gift
of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. He is
the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh under the Father
but by Him.
