so so Good morning, welcome to Seoul Bible Church this last Sunday of October. November is a month that Americans celebrate Thanksgiving, but we already have so much to thank the Lord for, don't we? You see a number of announcements there in the bulletin. I won't go through all of them, but we will be, Lord willing, looking at the church budget next week as we also have the Lord's table. I also want to give a special word of admonition of exhortation. Next week is a very first Sunday school class ever taught by Brother Noh here at Soul Bible Church. I think it would be a wonderful thing if everyone here now would be at Brother Noh's Sunday school class at 10 o'clock. Yes, next week is very important. Our pastor Na Hoon-cheon will lead us in the morning study of the Bible. It's the first time for him, so please pray for him. That's not to put any pressure on you, rather not. We love you. So with that in mind, let's go ahead and prepare our hearts with the hymn of meditation and preparation. In the bulletin, you will see both in Korean and English, Mrs. Henderson will play the first and the fourth verse. Remember, we've got to hope in our trials. Turn in your Bibles to 1 Timothy. Now, as we've been looking at the church this year, we reminded ourselves that believers in the Lord Jesus Christ are the church. So a local church, like Seoul Bible Church, assembles together. In the Greek, this is the word ekklesia, for gather together, to assemble together. So we gather together in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Why do we gather? For three things. And if you need a hint as to the direction, you can look there in the bulletin where you see that Seoul Bible Church Here on the very front page is exalting the Lord. Simply put, we are here together to worship the Lord. And you see there, the second God there is edifying the saints. What does that mean? As we gather together, you and I, we are going to try to mutually, one another, mutually edify, encourage, strengthen, edify, and exhort one another to love and good works. This edification, Acts 2.52, is going to include preaching the word, praying, some of these things that we've already talked about. So we are worshiping, we are edifying one another, we are hearing God's Word proclaimed, but then you see the third dot, we are desiring to reach our community, to reach the lost, to evangelize the lost. And I think I misquoted the reference earlier. It was Acts 2.42, not 52. Sorry about that. But the point is, the point is, we do want to worship God. We do want to be built up as Christians. We do want to reach the lost. And if you look on the church website and you see the mission statement, you will see these three things listed in our mission statement as well. Now then, we have been for the past few weeks in 1 Timothy. 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus are letters that the Apostle Paul wrote to two men as they led two different churches, one in Ephesus and one in Crete. We call these three letters, 1st and 2nd Timothy and Titus, we call these three letters pastoral epistles. You could say that these three letters are church handbooks, how to do church. If they teach us how to do church, They also teach us how to be the church, what kind of character we are to have. So once again, the Church of Jesus Christ is each and every saved believer. and we do assemble in the local assembly. And from the scriptures, as we have gone through this year, we have seen how the church body has many members. Each member, you and I, each of us have different gifts given to us by the Holy Spirit. This is important. This means every person in the church is important. No one can be ignored. You can't look down on anyone in the church because they are all Christ. They belong to Jesus. God loves them. So this affects how we treat one another. But this identity as a member of the body of Christ also places an obligation upon each and every one of us. If you belong to Jesus Christ, You cannot simply exist. You have a part to play. You have something to do. If you are the eyes, you must see. If you've got ears, there are things you need to be listening to. If you are the feet, with your feet shut and shed, with the gospel of the preparation of peace, Go out there and tell of Jesus Christ. If you are the liver and you get bitter that you can't be the beating heart and you go on strike, The body's going to be in very serious condition. We're going to die. Each and every one of us must be praying. Each and every one of us have a testimony as a Christian in our community and here at church. So not all of us will be able to cook like Mrs. Apley, but none of us will be able to play the piano like Mrs. Hendrickson, but all of us can do something. I'm not trying to embarrass you or to, you know, you understand. The point is, each of us are unique. We can honestly say each of us is one of a kind. No one here is identical to any other person here. It's probably not surprising that husbands and wives are different from one another. And I can even go further and say that Couples are different from other couples. So brides and actors and Hendricksons and Chews are all different. The children or teens among us don't have the same experience that some of the more mature among us have. And I want to be careful here, but some of the more mature among us may not have the same physical endurance that we had when we were teenagers or 20-year-olds or 30-year-olds. It's not the same after a while. And that's okay, that's good. That's the stage you are where God has put you. As I've said before, for each one of us as Christians, we all have jobs to do. Several weeks ago, we looked at 1 Timothy 2. Let's notice In 1 Timothy 2, I'll just read verse 1. First of all then, I urge that entreaties, prayers, petitions, and exhumations be made on behalf of all men. If you are a child of God, you should be a prayer warrior. You should be praying for all men right there. That's an obligation for everybody who is a Christian. Listen, as Christians, what is the highest priority in our lives? Someone came to Jesus and asked him, what's most important? What's the greatest law of the greatest? And what was most important? It's the same thing that is the first priority in the church, exalting the Lord, loving the Lord our God with all of our hearts, everything we are. Brother in Christ, sister in Christ, your first priority is to maintain your relationship to God. If you have allowed sin in your life, Confess, forsake, sin. If you've been doing something you should not have been doing, stop, repent, do what you want. Or maybe it's not that you are doing something wrong, it's that you are not doing what you should be. Maybe you need to get things right with God by starting to do those things that you have neglected. Maybe in the busyness of life, you have let your time with God's love. You've started putting aside the Bible, you know, you're too busy to read the Bible, too busy to pray. So whether it's sin, or busyness, or anything else that is keeping you from God, Matthew 6.33 says, first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. So, be careful by God's grace not to grieve the Holy Spirit with your actions. As we read the scriptures, pray, and seek to avoid grieving the Holy Spirit, we will, like our Savior, please God the Father, as he was pleased with his son. Have you ever had an eye to gain the deeds? And as you get ready to sleep, you're able to pray and to sense that the Father is saying, this is my child. She has done what she could. He did what she did for him. He was tempted but he didn't fall. He was tempted but he didn't quit. You kept your mouth shut when you needed to keep it shut, or when you spoke when you should have spoken. That's a good deal. To know that whatever else is going on, God is. It is in that moment when you know the peace of God that passes all understanding. Tomorrow we'll have more troubles. Tomorrow you'll need more grace and more mercy. But for tonight, as the psalmist says, the Lord makes his own to sleep. And sometimes that peace is simply knowing that when we have slept, that we've been forgiven. Now as you look at the title on the sermon, or in the bulletin, it says that the title is Church Demographics. Those of us who are Americans are very enamored this time with politics. There is a presidential election. This is a time of polls that dissect what everyone thinks by men, women, old, young, all kinds of demographics. And that was kind of in the back of my mind as I read 1 Timothy 3 through 6. We spent some time in 1 Timothy 3, and we've seen the leadership of the church, the pastors and the deacons. So in 1 Timothy 3, 1 through 13, we've got the character of the overseer, the pastor, the character of the deacons as well. And I think I've given you time to turn to 1 Timothy, so 1 Timothy 3 will be verses 14 through 16. In verse 14, 14 and 15, he says, I am writing these things to you about the deacons and everything else, hoping to come to you before long. But in case I am delayed, I write live, so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of truth. Look at verse 16. This is who it's all about. Jesus Christ. What's he like? By common confession. Great is the mystery of godliness. Jesus Christ was revealed in the flesh. He was vindicated in the spirit. He rose from the dead. He was seen by angels. proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up into glory. Look at verse 16, the mystery of godliness. What does it mean to be godly? It means to believe in God. In Genesis 15.6, Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for righteousness. So godliness is the right response to the saving work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, the Son of God humbled himself to become a man to obey God's plan. The man Christ Jesus fulfilled all righteousness doing all God demanded even going to the cross at God's command. His righteous life was the wonder of men, angels, and God the Father himself said, this is my beloved. At his baptism, the Holy Spirit came upon him as a dove. He was vindicated in the Spirit. The Spirit took him into the wilderness to be tested for 40 days and 40 nights, and he passed the test. So as he was vindicated in the Spirit, he died and the Spirit raised him from the dead, Romans 1. The Lord Jesus Christ gave his life for you and for me before rising triumphantly, winning the victory over sin and death and Satan. Praise God, we serve a living savior. He's in the world today. And yes, we know he is living whatever And then they say, as the song says, And today, at this hour, he is at God, the Father's right hand, making intercession for us in glory. as our great high priest. Turn the page. 1 Timothy 4, verse 10 tells us, it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. John 14.6, Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. And as John reminds us in John 20, he writes his gospel so that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ the son of the living God. On October 31st, 1517, a monk in Wittenberg nailed to the door 95 theses. The nailing of those species began a revolution that shook Europe and the world. The world had to be reminded, Jesus Christ alone is the savior. It's not Mary, it's not the saints, it's not works. None of those things save you. Christ saved you. So as we sang, I know not why God to wonder's grace, hymn number 410. We sing about grace and faith. We are saved by grace through faith. These were anchors of our salvation that we had to be reminded this is the only way to God. All of our self-righteousness, the works we do of ourselves are filthy rags because they're not good. But Christ's blood was enough. He is a sinner. And he does give the gift of eternal life to whoever believes on himself. But another of those keys that open the church door from chains of Catholicism is the doctrine of sola What does that mean? This doctrine teaches us the Bible alone is enough, it's sufficient to teach us about everything that pertains to life and salvation. The Holy Spirit himself gave us this inerrant, no mistakes writing. You don't need a pope. You don't need a priest. You don't need tradition. You need the Bible to tell you how to be saved. This is the Word of God. So the Bible is the final authority for the church, not the Pope or councils or anything. And so that means we need to be careful, doesn't it? Because in Revelation, Jesus Christ says that those who add to this or those who take from this, place themselves under a very dire curse. So, look at verse 6. We, as God's people here in the Church, need to understand the importance of the Scripture. Yes, in verse 6 of 1 Timothy 4, Paul says, in pointing these things, in pointing out the Scripture, in pointing out warnings, in pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on what? On the words of the faith. and of what sound doctrine would you follow? Drop down to verse 11. Timothy, of course, is a pastor, and so what's he going to do? Prescribe and teach these things. Teach what things? Teach the Bible. Again, verse 13. Until I come, give attention to what? The public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching. All of that is Bible-focused. So what do we do? We teach the Bible. We use the Bible, verse 13, to exhort one another. It is the scriptures that we are obligated to obey. In verses 7 through 11, we see this is the thrust, obey the Bible. Look at verse 7. Have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness, for bodily exercise is only of a little profit. But godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. Fables, literature, other things, waste of time. God's work, pay attention. We said that godliness is trusting God, in verse 316. In verse 8 here, 4.8, we see that godliness takes self-discipline. How do we learn how to be godly? We look to the scriptures. Why? Because the scriptures are trustworthy. Look at verse 9. It is trustworthy statement. Worthy, deserving of full acceptance. And so that is indeed, as verse 11 says, what we prescribe and teach about Christ, our fixed hope in verse 10. So as we obey the Bible, we condemn what the Bible condemns. I won't take the time to read it, but verses 1 through 4 tells us about some of those false teachings, that legalism or asceticism. We condemn what the Bible condemns, but we teach and approve what the Bible approves and teaches. As the apostles gave themselves both to preaching and prayer, Even so today, pastors must exercise themselves to study the scriptures, to know the scriptures, and to explain them as the Lord gives them Likewise, today's pastors and accountants should study the Bible carefully. They should know the Bible, and they should be able to explain and teach it well according to the grace that the Lord has given them. You know, the Bible is, this church is not only Seoul Bible Church. I'm sorry. In English, it is. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Even in Korean, we say, Seoul, yeah, Seoul Seonggyeokgyo, yeah. Middle, yeah. I'm sorry. Korean or English, we keep it central. We keep it in the middle. Seoul Seonggyeokgyo, yeah. Now here is Timothy, this man who's probably at this point been with Paul 15 years. He's heard the scriptures, he knows about it. He's 30 years old, relatively young. Can he coast on his seminary degree with Paul? I mean, he's been with the man 15 years. He knows it all, right? Let's pick up in verses 12 through 16, verse 24. Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, show yourself an example for those who believe. Until I come, give attention to the public re-inscription, to exhortation, to teaching. Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance, with the laying on of hands by the Presbyterian. Take pains with these things. Be absorbed in them so that your progress, he's got further to go, so that your progress will be evident to all. Verse 16, pay close attention to yourself, to your teaching, Persevere in these things, for as you do this, you will ensure salvation, both for yourself and for those who hear you. Anyone who does not respect my forgiveness, but only believes in words, deeds, love, faith, and piety, should participate in what I read, what I send, and what I teach until this time. Be careful not to be deceived by the prophecy of my mother-in-law or mother-in-law, So pastors, teachers, need to exercise themselves to know the scriptures. You need to study them so that you can explain them. And of course, in verse 12, you need to be an example of what you're preaching. And so here is a church led by pastors and deacons. Here's a church that believes in Christ according to the scriptures. What is the profile of the church? What are the church demographics? Look at verses 1 and 2. Chapter 5, sorry. Verse 55, 1 and 2. Do not rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, the younger men as brothers, the older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters in all purity. Who is in the church? What's the demographic? Verse 1, men. Verse 2, women. Verse 1, old and young. Verse 2, old and young. Now, I don't know how you count people, but that looks like that's about everyone. Scripturally, there are only two choices, male or female. Our world disagrees. And according to the Bible, they're wrong. And so let me rephrase that, according to God, their maker, their law. The Bible says it, God says it. So what we see as we look at 1 Timothy 5 and 6, the conclusion of this book is that there's a recognition that every single person in the church, male, female, young, old, need to respond to God's Word. and the pastor needs to care for everyone in the church, young, old, male, female. So again, for us as Soul Bible Church, each and every one of us who know Christ need to testify by our lives and by our words that we are Christians and we belong to Jesus. Let's face it, we live in a skeptical world. And one of the ways that we show that we belong to Jesus is how we treat one another. We said that the first priority must be to love God completely. The second is the second commandment, to love our neighbors as ourselves. But you see, in 1 Timothy 5, 1 and 2, who are we? We are family. Fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters. Soon, we're family here. You are my sisters, you are my brothers. And what we see as five and six unfold, there are three groups that are given special honor. Look at verse three. Honor widows who are widows indeed. Look at verse 17, 517. The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. And the third group is found in the last chapter, 6.1. In 6.1, we see all who are under the yoke of slaves are to regard their own masters as what? Worthy of all honor. So that the name of God and our doctrine will not be spoken against. So 1 Timothy 5, 1 and 2 says everybody, needs attention. We're all family. But as you look at verses 3 through 13 about honoring widows, we need to recognize that there will be some in the church who will need special help, these widows indeed. Widows in biblical times often were very poor. And so once her husband died in verse four, her children could take care of her. But what if she's childless? She is alone in the world, no support. And she goes to the church family in verse five. And so this is someone who lives a godly life. She's not just anyone. She's in the church. She's church family. And then you're able to help her if she It does need that help. And so she has that great testimony and the church has the testimony of helping her. But not only are there those who need help, But we should require those who are able to help themselves to help themselves. And we see that in verses 14 through 16. Because there were younger widows who were using you know, no responsibilities for kids or husbands and they were wasting time gossiping and playing. And so you see them in verse 13 going from house to house gossiping visibly. You know, this is not good. So quickly, verses 14 through 16. I want younger women, younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house, give the enemy no occasion for reproach. For some have already turned aside to follow Satan. If any woman who is a believer has dependent widows, in other words, your mom's a widow or something like that, assist them. And the church must not be burdened so that it may assist those who are widows. So younger widows could remarry. have children, be a blessing there at the house. My mom was widowed in her 20s. She remained single. But she was not a gossip or a busybody. Instead, she went into the ministry. She went to teach at a Christian school. So here was a widow raising two sons on a Christian school teacher salary, which is even more impressive in the United States than it is here. So she served God, paid her bills, and at the churches that she was a member of, she was a testimony to And there were times when the church did help us because it was rough. Finally, the first group is the widows that are to be honored. The second group to be honored in verses 17 to 25, we see the pastors. In verse 18, we see there to be paid. In 19 and 20, we see that we are to deal with sinning pastors, that they must be disciplined, but only with witnesses. But finally, we see that in chapter 6 verse 1 that we are to serve God because there's a reality. We're Christians. And so Paul addresses the poor and the rich. In both cases, whether you're an employee here in Chapter 6 or you're rich elsewhere, you are Christ's. If you're an employee, you're a Christian employee. Live like it. Live like you're a Christian. In 6 verses 17 through 19, if you're wealthy and rich, be humble and helpful with your generosity. Let's wind up with ABCDs for Christians. Alright, letter A. 1 Timothy 6, 3 through 5, avoid divisiveness. Don't be a fighter. Avoid arguments, avoid divisions. Letter B. Be content. 1 Timothy 6, verses 6 through 10. Godliness with contentment is great gain. C. Commit yourself. to righteous, zealous living for God, 1 Timothy 6, 11 through 16. And finally, last but not least, D, defend the faith. 1 Timothy 6, 20 and 21. Father, we thank you for your work. We thank you for Christ Jesus, our Lord. For the Holy Spirit, who is the seal of our inheritance, And for the father who sent the son to save sinners. Help us to be godly Christians in a church that loves one another. and loves you supremely. In Jesus' name. Amen. Now then, many of us have sung the song, Oh 4,000 Tongues to Sing. I'm going to ask you to get out the handout in your bulletin. So there are two songs with the same melody. And so we're going to be mixing the stanzas because what we want to do is praise the Lord with our mouth from the heart and then serve the Lord with our hands. So that's kind of the direction we're going. And since there are a lot of standards, you can stay seated so you won't get worn out. We'll sing all six. Over a thousand times. To share God's joy in the times of hard and stress. And God makes the world His abode, to give all our love. May the rest of Europe admire Him, God is watching! In Jesus' name, amen. Amen. And set seat. Let's pray. Father, we thank you for that excellent name that does charm our ears. Lord, glorify that wonderful name, Jesus Christ in us. and we will give you all the glory in Jesus name. Amen. so
