Dying to Self Even Unto Death
When we pray "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven," we are asking God to help us and all people to deny ourselves and take up our cross, and follow Jesus Christ. We have to renounce our own wills as sinful and both want and work according to the will of God because it alone is good. We are called to do this and can be expected to do this because it is the work of God in the heart of a Christian. We are new creations born again in Jesus Christ. We must live into this by dying to the old self which was defined by its separation from God and opposition to him, and we must live in our new self which is united to Jesus Christ. He bore his cross for us and we bear our crosses for him out of gratitude. The cross we bear is one of suffering for Christ's name as part of our faithful service to him as our master. We must be willing to pursue this will of God even unto the death.
