Good Thursday evening, Facebook, this is Pastor Dwayne Russell coming to you live for our Thursday night Bible study and prayer time. We welcome you into the classroom with us tonight. We open up our Bibles, we study the scriptures together and we end our time together in just a little while with a prayer time. So if we can pray for you in some way, I'd ask you to put your prayer request in the comment section. And if I see those comments while we're talking, I'll record those and then we'll pray for those needs specifically at the end of our broadcast. If for some reason I miss your prayer request live, I'm going to tell you that before the night is over, I'll take all of your prayer requests and I'll take those needs before the Lord and ask God to work in your life in a very powerful and a very real way. I want to welcome everybody as y'all begin to gather to the classroom tonight. I want to say good evening to Miss Karen. I want to say hey, Brother Ron. How y'all doing? It's good to see y'all out there, Miss Shelly. Hello, how are you? Good to see all of you coming on there tonight with me. Hope this Thursday night is doing well for you. Hope you're doing well. As your as your service to the Lord Good to see all of you coming on live with me tonight. I'm going to take us to first Thessalonians first Thessalonians chapter 4 tonight is where we're studying together and As always, excuse me a little bit, got a little bit of a change of the weather effects on my sinuses, so I hope you all can bear with me about that tonight. But we're going to be in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, verse 7 is where we're going to start together. And I know that last week we talked about verses seven and eight, but I want to use that as a context, a contextual verse to get us into where we want to go tonight with a lesson. So get your seatbelts on, get on your steel-toed boots, and let's dive right into the scriptures together tonight. If you're joining us for the first time, we want to welcome you to the classroom. I do this every Thursday night with our family of faith, friends of our ministry, and hopefully new guests, new people will become a part of this little group on Thursday night. We want it to be a blessing to you. If you have questions, feel free to put your questions in the comment section. If I cannot address the question live, I will address your question when I have an opportunity after the broadcast is over. So prayer request in the comment section, questions you have in the comment section, amens in the comment section. All of that is good communication back to me. I love hearing back from all of you. All right, so we're gonna be in 1 Thessalonians chapter four and verse seven. And boy, I'm gonna try tonight to get to the best part of this chapter in a few moments. But remember that Paul is a pastor. First and foremost, when it comes to the life of the church, he has a pastor's heart. And his desire is that the people of God would love the Lord together, and they would serve the Lord together, and they would fellowship around the Word of God together. And it was all about being united in Christ Jesus. Now I want to say as I begin my comments tonight, your relationship with God is between you and God first and foremost, no doubt about it. But as a result of your relationship with God, God takes you and places you in the context of a family of faith. God's intention is that you would never be a newborn child that is left out there on their own. When you come to faith in Jesus Christ, the Bible tells us that you become a newborn babe in Christ Jesus. And what he does with you is he puts you into a context of a family. And that family is to nurture you and to encourage you and to find the good things about you and amplify those good things in your heart and life and encourage you to grow up in the Lord. And that's what the church family of faith is supposed to be all about. And so God really wants us to grow. He wants us to know Him. He wants us to grow in the Lord. He wants us to grow in the fear and admonition of the Lord. He wants us to find faithfulness in the Lord with the gathering of His people. He wants us to serve the Lord in the gathering of His people. He wants us to learn how to fail in the gathering of God's people. Now, most preachers won't talk about that, but that is an important part of growing up. We have children that we take care of in our home, and the only way those children oftentimes learn is through making some mistakes. Well, guess what? The only time a child makes a mistake is when they're trying to do the right thing, and maybe they do it somehow wrong or make a mistake in their effort, You don't chastise a child for trying. You chastise a child when they know they're supposed to and they choose not to. That's when a discipline and chastisement comes on a child. And God is the same with you and me. God doesn't chastise us because we're trying to love Him and serve Him and be faithful and obedient to Him. No, He chastises the child who wants to remain lazy and express a feeling or an expression of entitlement that somehow just because we have arrived to a relationship with God, God is obligated to us. That is a lie from hell itself. God is not obligated to us. We owe everything to God. When He loves us, when we're unlovely, when we're unlovable, when we're disobedient, when we're dead in our trespasses and sins, He loves us in spite of ourselves and we respond to that love and we receive the grace and mercy of God. At that moment, we enter into a relationship that we're supposed to spend the rest of our life learning how to love Him in return. And that is exactly what God does in your life. We don't chastise a child because they try and fail. We discipline a child when they do not care to try, when they don't even put forward any effort, when they have an attitude of entitlement. That's when discipline is there to try to get them on the right path, that everybody in the family is to be a contributor. Well, that's the same thing it's supposed to be in the family of faith. The church is not a building. It's the people of God. They gather together in that building. And when we gather, It is the intention of God that we would encourage, lift up, love, serve, find points of obedience together in the togetherness of God's people, so that what? So that we bless the holy name of God. And so if anybody is just watching right now with us, I want to say welcome. I've seen a number of you tuning in, and I've missed all of you. Brother Bob and Miss Connie and Jody, I see you out there. And I see Tim Sheets out there and Iris and Tanya. Thank God for each and every one of you. Debbie Walton, I see you out there. Thank you for joining in tonight. I hope you'll stick with me. I hope that you'll stay with us in this Bible study hour. We're in 1 Thessalonians chapter four. And I want to pick up our study in verse seven, but I've got to race toward the end of the chapter tonight because I get to a very, very special part of this chapter tonight. It's all about, it's all about what life is going to be like in a near time future for every true believer. We're going to get to that tonight. But first I want to pick up in verse seven. Chapter 4 verse 7. Here's what Paul writes to the church for God has not called us God has not called us to uncleanness That is he's not called us to be like the world He's not called us to that but he has called us to holiness Holiness is not sinless perfection. Don't let any preacher, any denomination, tell you that a certain characteristic is required in order to be considered right or wrong with God. What's right or wrong with God is first and foremost a person's heart. It has to begin with a heart. If it begins with the mind, the mind can be corrupted by feelings and emotions, but the heart is where man believes under righteousness. And when you believe in your heart, that means you have a soft and pliable heart that is able to be blessed by God and to become a blessing to God. So he says, God has not called us to unclean living. but he has called us to a life of holiness, set apart for the purpose of God, useful to the plans of God, waiting and watching for the things of God. That's what it means to be holy. We're not sinless perfection. We don't have any sinless ability in our hearts, but we do have a right relationship with God that causes us to seek the things of God in our life. And so he says after that, he says, he therefore that despises, despises not man, but God who has given us his Holy Spirit. And what that means is if anybody comes against you for living a holy life, they're not coming against you, they're coming against the God in you. Can I say that again a different way? Oftentimes, just our very existence in a circle of people causes an offense. Sometimes our very expression of love for God or the gospel of Jesus Christ creates an offense. And when they become offended, who are they really offended by, us or the God that's in us? And I'm submitting to you the same thing the apostle Paul submitted to his church. And I'm submitting to you, it's not you they hate. It is the light of God's glory shining too bright. And they didn't have time to put on spiritual, spiritual sunglasses. They didn't have any way to dispel the light. And so they're angry at it. It's just like when you go into a teenager's room in the morning, first thing in the morning, and they're not awake yet, and you flip on the light in their face. The first thing they're going to do is cover their head with a blanket. That's what many people in the world do. The first thing they see in your heart in life, you might be a mile away and you come up on them and they just don't like you and you don't know why they don't like you. Your light's shining too bright. You name the name of Jesus. You love the Lord. You're carrying the cross in front of you, spiritually speaking, and they don't like the cross. The Bible says the cross is a symbol of foolishness to those who are perishing. And so, you and I have got to always remember, the first thing people often reject when they don't know us is they reject the Christ that is on display in us. And so there are people who are gonna, they're gonna come across nasty. They're gonna come across just flat out nasty. And it isn't about us at all. It's about the Jesus that is coming through us to a watching world. And so he says to them, he says, but you have the Holy Spirit on the inside of you. And that Holy Spirit is a bright light of God's glory. As long as you do not quench the Spirit, And what that means, ladies and gentlemen, is you and I understand our position in Christ, and we strive to live a holy, righteous life. Not perfect, but right with the Lord. So then he goes on and he says, but as touching brotherly love, he says, you need not that I write unto you, for yourselves are taught of God how to love one another. The church is to be a place of spiritual love. Spiritual love. What does that mean? That means patience, long-suffering, a temperance that is even-tempered, not riled up too quickly, not reactive to one another negatively, but loving one another. And I know I've covered a lot of ground already in my first few minutes, because I don't want you to miss this. But I want you to get a hold of this reality, ladies and gentlemen. The church, I've heard people say it in our culture over and over again. Even blood-bought, born-again children of God are getting caught up in this phrase that says, well, the church is not the building. The church is the people. And then it says, be the church in the culture. Well, I want you to understand that they're only half right. That is, you and I who believe in Jesus Christ, we are the church. And we are the temple of the Holy Spirit that dwells on the inside of us. And so as we go into the world and around the world, we represent Christ because he's on the inside of us. There is something very, very significant about the church gathering that the world is trying to destroy. The world is trying to undermine, and that's a danger in our culture, in our world, in our society. take away the gathering of the church and you diminish the power of restoration, the power of repentance, the power of service, you diminish the very thread that holds the congregation of people together. So he says, you know from God how to love one another. Then he says, you do, verse 10, toward all the brethren, excuse me one second. He says, you do to all the brethren which are in Macedonia, but we beseech you, brethren, that you increase more and more. And we talked about that last week. And then he says, that you study to be quiet and do your own business and work with your own hands as we command you. That you may walk honestly toward them that are without and that you may have lack of nothing. And all of that is for Paul to say to the church, church, you work and you let God bless your efforts so that in the congregation of faith, nobody does without. That's really what he's saying right there, that we are responsible for one another in the life of the family of faith. Now, Can I get you to some really good stuff here tonight? As if some of what I have shared already isn't pretty good, but let me take you to 1 Thessalonians 4, verse 13. Are you ready? If you are, say amen. Are you ready? Here it is, watch this. Verse 13, but I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren. Watch this. concerning them that are asleep, that you sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. Now Paul takes the whole context of this chapter and shifts it toward something very, very close to all of our hearts. Have you lost a loved one? Have you lost a loved one and you might still be in a period or a season of grieving? Paul in this passage of scripture is addressing that very subject. Now listen to me carefully. There's no timetable on grief. If you are sitting here tonight grieving the loss of a loved one, I've known people who grieve the loss of a loved one over 30 years. Some have lost a loved one in recent days, and they feel like they're just not gonna bounce back from it. Grief has no bounds. There's nobody that can look at you and say, well, you've grieved long enough, now stop it. Nobody can look at you and tell you that you grieve for a couple of years and that's long enough. Ladies and gentlemen, if you truly love somebody and you know you're loved by that somebody, there's no time limit on grief. So please hear me carefully. First and foremost, Paul is not telling us that we won't or that we should not grieve the loss of a loved one. By the way, The Bible is speaking about those that are asleep as a reference to what it means for a believer who dies. A believer, a true blood-bought, born-again believer in Jesus Christ, in the spiritual sense, does not die. Now understand what I'm saying in its context. We see the physical body that has died. But the spirit and the soul of that loved one, if they truly, truly knew Jesus Christ as their Lord and their Savior, the Bible says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. So what's the transition? Sleep. A sleep that transitions a true believer from this life to the life to come. From this life to eternal life. Now, I want you to really think about that because that's what Paul is addressing here. He says, look, he says, I'm not going to tell you you can't grieve. I'm not going to tell you it's wrong to grieve. I'm not going to tell you how long to grieve. I'm not going to tell you the right way or the wrong way to grieve the loss of somebody you love. But he does say, don't grieve in such a way as to give the indication that you have no hope. If you believe Jesus Christ died on a cruel cross, was put into a borrowed tomb, and was raised three days later victorious over death held in the grave, then you believe. that a true believer in Jesus Christ is only making the transition from this life to the life forever in the very presence and glory of God. That's what he's talking about here. And so he says, I'm not going to tell you how to grieve or how long to grieve or what's right or what's wrong, but I do want to caution you. Don't give the impression in your grief that there's no hope. Because if that person that you're grieving knew Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they fell asleep to make their transition from this life to the life to come. And if they're true believers in Jesus Christ, They take that last physical breath on this earth. And the very next breath they take is in the glory of God. That is what we believe as Christians. That is our hope. That is our life. That is our system of belief. That's what gives us encouragement to carry on. It is to know that when I draw my last breath in this physical body, the next breath I draw is going to be in the very presence and glorious, glorious presence of our Heavenly Father. That's what Paul is talking about in this passage of scripture. How beautiful is that? How powerful is that? Can you imagine watching your loved one in that sick bed? They've been sick for so long. They've suffered so long. But you have an assurance in your heart that they had faith to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to be in them and with them as their Lord and Savior. And you are there watching that last physical breath exhaust from their body. And you imagine in the spirit of your mind You watch that chest decompress, and that last breath comes out of them, and from that very second. you imagine, they've just been set free. They're leaping for joy in the presence of God, and they're walking the streets of gold in heaven, and they're with other believers who have gone on before them, and they're embracing loved ones who have gone on before them, and that is what our hope in Christ is all about. That is so beautiful and powerful and amazing. And I don't even feel in my heart of hearts that I've adequately put into words what Paul is expressing, but I sure hope and pray to God you can feel something of my passion. So he goes in 1 Thessalonians 1 verse 14, and he says, For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them which also which sleep in Jesus, in Christ, in the Lord, will God bring with him. This we say unto you by the word of the Lord that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord Shall not prevent them which are asleep now ladies and gentlemen the King James word prevent just means be come ahead of So in other words, what he's saying is the ones that have died in Christ. They fell asleep Remember they transition from this life to eternal life. He says those souls are Christ is gonna bring with him again, and there's going to be a joining up together. Look at what he says in verse 16. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first. What does that mean? That means that at that very second, a spiritual body is going to be united with the souls of those that have gone on before us. And there's going to be a physical body, some type of an eternal body, I don't want to say physical, but an eternal body that's going to be reunited with them. And then, he says, for us, who are left behind, or, you know, been left behind, and we're still inhabiting this earth, look at what he says. He says, then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore, comfort one another with these words. Amen, hallelujah, praise God. What's he saying? He's telling us, he's telling us about the process of grief. And he says it's human to grieve. But don't grieve as a believer in Jesus Christ as if you have no hope of eternal things. Don't grieve as if there's no hope for tomorrow. And if there's anything we need in modern Christianity, It is to believe, and to believe, to believe that Jesus Christ did die, and that he was put into a borrowed tomb, and that he was raised again on the third day, and that Jesus did not just disappear absent from everybody's sight. No, Jesus showed himself and bore witness with many infallible proofs for 40 days after his death, burial, and resurrection so that Everybody would know that they know that they know there is the power of resurrection For the human body. What does that mean for you and me? That means that in eternity future at some point We are going to be reunited With those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ who have gone on before us remember they fell asleep took their last breath took in the breath of heaven when they got there in the presence of God. And they're saying their soul is there waiting, waiting for a physical body that can re-inhabit this earth. And what Paul is addressing is, if you know they had faith to believe in Jesus Christ, you're going to meet them again. It might be in the rapture. When all of us are transformed in the twinkling of an eye, we are here on this earth, a trumpet blast of heaven blows, our physical body just transitions immediately in the twinkling of an eye. You know what a twinkling is? It's less than a blink. In the twinkling of an eye, we're transformed into these bodies that can inhabit glory, that can inhabit heaven. and we're gonna be meeting those that have gone on before us. What a reunion that's gonna be. And you say, preacher, you're being way, way dramatic. No, I'm not. I'm not being dramatic enough. I'm not able to put into words adequately what this really means to the lives of people who might take time to watch this video. I believe with every fiber of my being that the Bible is true and every single word of it. And I believe that if God spoke it, he is going to fulfill it. He has already proven that time and time again. And I believe that if Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever, he's gonna keep be true to every promise he's made in the pattern of the scripture. And I'm telling you, Those tormented souls, people who have placed their faith in Christ in this life, but they were tormented. They were absolutely overwhelmed with things in this life. Can you even imagine how the freedom they're experiencing when God, not man, when God set them free from this physical body to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. I'm telling you, ladies and gentlemen, there's nothing more powerful that I can preach about. There's nothing more beautiful that I can speak about. There's nothing more important than a preacher can make you hear me say tonight than what I've shared with you. And I'm telling you, for those of you who are struggling right now, cancer, heart disease, struggling in the flesh with the pains and aches of betrayal and the brokenness of this life, the tragedies and the trials of this life, listen. every single negative thing that takes place in a believer's life, a true blood-bought, born-again believer's life. Every trial and tragedy has a purpose to strengthen you for the future, but also to make you long for eternity with God. Every ache, every pain, every sadness, every sorrow, every betrayal, every circumstance that negatively comes into your life as a believer, as a believer. God's gonna use it to strengthen you for the journey. He's gonna keep you on the journey. He's gonna keep moving you forward on the journey of this thing called life. Until one day the groanings of this life, the pains of this life, make you so weary and so tired you look forward more than ever before for that sweet moment of release when you say, Lord, into your hands I commit my spirit. That, ladies and gentlemen, is an expression that Jesus gave on the cross of Calvary as a moment of release. into thine hands i commit my spirit and the bible says at that moment he gave up the ghost what does that mean the soul and spirit departed from that physical body that had been so beaten up by hatred betrayed spat upon, skin ripped off the shreds off bones in his body, the plated thorns pushed down on his forehead, and all of that physical body left and remained on that cross of Calvary, and the spirit the soul of Jesus Christ had already been removed from that moment of time. I believe that with every fiber of my being. I believe they put the shell of that body in that borrowed tomb. And I believe that the Spirit of God went into that tomb and it was the glory, the Shekinah glory of God, the power of God raised Jesus Christ in that grave, that physical body, Listen that physical body was changed in the twinkling of an eye To be reunited with the soul and spirit of that Jesus body and spirit and all of a sudden He could be seen by people. He could eat food with his people. He could pray with his people. He could walk and talk With his people all because he had now received a resurrected body that was brought forward by the power of almighty God. And that same power is gonna raise you from the dead one day. That same power is gonna raise your body from the grave. Be reunited with your soul and spirit in some form and fashion That only God can describe and you're gonna be ready to reinhabit this earth when God sets up his kingdom That's a whole nother sermon Now if you're watching this video tonight I'll ask you the most important question If you died today Do you know that you would be allowed to go into God's heaven? See, only holy people can go to heaven. Only people who are made holy. By what? By the forgiveness of Jesus Christ. By the cleansing of his blood. And by confessing your sins for that forgiveness to be brought forward into your life. That sets you free to have your name written down in the Lamb's Book of Life. If you died today, do you know that you would be allowed to go into God's heaven? The only entrance that you and I will have is your name written down in the Lamb's Book of Life. You say, how do I get that name written down? You believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. You believe in Him. and you accept his forgiveness, and you receive the cleansing of him in all of his sin, and then you make a promise to turn from living your way to turn to living God's way. And God's way is a way of love, learning to love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving his children. Said preacher, how can I have that kind of peace with God? You can bow your head. Your heart's already beating a little faster. You already know in your mind that you need to make this decision. I'm just going to give you a prayer of words that you can express what is already happening in your spirit. My words don't save you. This prayer doesn't save you. your heart, beating for the Lord Jesus Christ, pleading for his forgiveness. That's what gets your name written down in the Lamb's Book of Life. You want that to happen right now? You bow your head right where you are, if you're able to, and you pray this prayer after me. You say, dear God, I know that I'm a sinner. I've broken your commandments. I've gone my own way. And oh God, I am sorry. Will you please forgive me? Will you apply the blood of Jesus to wash away all of my sins? Will you live in my heart in the aid of the Holy Spirit? And will you teach me how to love you the rest of my life? I surrender my life to you. Thank you for accepting me. I pray this prayer in Jesus' name. If you prayed that prayer and you felt it, let somebody in the faith family know that you prayed that prayer. Get to church on Sunday. We'd love to have you come to Beacon Baptist, but I want you to go to a church that you have friends and family there. Go to a place that you can worship God freely and learn God's word. But still, it's important that you tell somebody about your decision to pray with this preacher on the Facebook Live video, and you want to know more about that decision. If I can be of any help to you, feel free to reach out to me. I'll do whatever I can to help you. Now for our faith family, Beacon Baptist, I love all of you. I am so very thankful for our faith family. I'm thankful that you all faithfully participate and support our ministry, even tonight. Thank you for being out there. I hope this video is of benefit to you. And I hope that if it is, you would like the video on your timeline and share it. That's not to make preacher Dwayne Russell known. It's to get the message of the gospel to as many people as we possibly can before it's too late. Right now, this is still a means that we have to tell the world about Jesus. It's one tool, but it's still a tool that we can use to share the gospel. I wanna say thank you to each and every one of you for participating, for showing your love and support. And I'm gonna pray for the needs that I'm aware of, okay? For our faith family, we're gonna pray for the needs that we know about. Remember what I've said to you if you put a prayer request in the comment section and I miss it live I Go back through and read all of your all of your comments all of your prayer requests all of your amens all of whatever's that you write to me and if I see any prayer requests that I miss I Want you to know that before the night is over. I'll take your knee before the Lord's throne and because I believe God is answering prayers, and I believe he has the power to make a difference. So let's pray, family of faith. Can we all pray together? Dear God, I come before you tonight to thank you and praise you for this time in your word. I pray, Heavenly Father, that something that I've said has struck some heart chords out there, and that people are excited and challenged in their walk of faith. I pray, Heavenly Father, for the names of people that we have heard about that need prayer. I think about Betty Faye Strong tonight and her family. They've got a lot of circumstances and situations in their family. I pray for her sister, Marty, and the loss in her life this week and a tragic loss, I think, of a daughter. And God, I just pray for strength and watch care. I pray for Jake Williams, Heavenly Father, that you'd minister to him and give him strength emotionally and spiritually. I pray, Heavenly Father, for Miss Cheryl Hood, and God, she's still so sick and not quite bouncing back. Heavenly Father, would you please show your power and authority over that sickness in her body and bring wellness to her? We love her, and we want her to be strengthened by you. For Bob and Felicia, God, I'm so thankful for your grace and mercy. Continue, please, Heavenly Father, to show that same grace and mercy. I pray for Joni and Ron, physical needs that they have, God, and you're giving them the aid of working every day, but Lord, they still need strength that only you can provide to them. For Steve and Betty Zoles, our Heavenly Father, the physical needs they have, are overwhelming, but God, you're powerful, and we are gonna trust you for Ricky and Joyce, Ricky especially, Father God. Lift him up, Father, and just give him strength that he needs. For Shirley Bailey, Father, God Almighty, I pray for blessings in her life. I pray for angels around her bedside to watch over her. God, as your scripture says, to not even let her foot be dashed against a stone. I pray, Heavenly Father, for Stephanie and Lonnie, their needs physically and emotionally. God, I praise you for what you've done and been doing in their lives. Please, O God, keep on working so wonderfully there. We pray for all of the flood victims and those that are still going through the aftermath of the hurricanes, Father. And we pray for those that God are dealing with other heartaches and hurts, as we've talked about in Shelbyville, the drug overdoses and the people that are being left behind. Oh, Heavenly Father, please, please, please raise up a true beacon of hope in Shelby County, Father, that people will be drawn not to a building, but to a relationship with the one who establishes those places of worship. God, we love you, we trust you, and we depend on you for every breath we take, and we give you our lives. We give you this prayer in Jesus' name, amen. God bless you. I want to say I love all of you. Thank you for being out there with me tonight. Like the video, share the video. Hopefully we'll get some people to find a relationship to Jesus Christ. And that's what this is all about. I hope this has been a blessing to you. Feel free to share some comments back at me. Let me know if it's a special thing for you. It sure is special to spend this time together. I hope you have a great rest of your night. Get some rest. and I'll look forward to seeing you this coming Sunday. Until then, let's all just keep watching for the Father. God bless you, have a good night.
