God Promised the Gospel

Paul, perhaps almost bursting with all that he wanted to include in his letter to the believers in Rome, moves from one aspect of the gospel to another in the initial verses of chapter one. As you remember, Paul introduced himself to the churches in the city of Rome with three clauses: "Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God." I can envision the "gospel of God" reminding Paul of what he wanted to convey about the promise of the gospel: "which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures." Still considering the promised good news, Paul moves from the promise of the gospel to the Person of the gospel: "concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection of the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord." In these verses we see both the humanity and the deity of our Lord Jesus, particularly considered from the perspective of those on earth.
