Temples and traitors
Series Acts
As Stephen reaches the conclusion of his seminal sermon, he completes his survey of Israel's history and then brings it powerfully into the present.
He reminds his congregation of God's presence with them in a tent, divine faithfulness and mercy revealed in the wilderness and in the conquest of the Promised Land, despite Israel's sins. He reminds them that, when the temple was built with men's hands, once Israel had settled the land, it should never have suggested that the Lord was now confined and constrained.
Then Stephen points out that the Sanhedrin, far from being defenders of the law and the temple, are the true blasphemers, for they resist the Spirit, persecute the prophets, betrayed Messiah, and reject the law.
It is a powerful sermon that presses home the question of whether or not our religion extends beyond the shell of the outer man and penetrates to the depths of our hearts.
