It's not cutting in and out or anything, is it? Is it coming across okay? Am I sounding all right? Give me a thumbs up or an amen or yeah, you sound good preacher or yeah, you need to turn it up whatever whatever it takes Well, we are going to be studying in chapter Uh, hello, miss polly. Good to see you out there tonight. God bless you Uh, if if you have your copy of god's word and you want to follow along tonight i've got a good Study for us to go through tonight And i'm excited about sharing it with you. So Let's take our bibles and go to first Thessalonians chapter 4 and like always I start out with a question or at least an idea for us to kind of get our minds going and And here's what I want to ask you tonight Why? Why? Why does God This is gonna be kind of a tricky question Why does God? have the right to tell us what to do? Why does God have the right to tell us how to live? Why does God have the right to demand or command anything out of our lives? Now, there are two obvious things to say right out of the gate, right? Most of us would say, well, He earned that right through our salvation. That is, if we've made peace with God by receiving the gift of God's grace and mercy in his son, Jesus Christ, then because we've received from him that grace, mercy, and forgiveness, then God has a right now to expect us to live according to his will, his purpose, his plan. But that's only part of the picture tonight. Before I continue on, let me just say hello to Ms. Iris and Ms. Felicia. Good to see you. Ms. Felicia, I don't know if you caught my question. Maybe you came in just after I asked my question. But I'm gonna ask the question again. What gives God the right? Now, somebody else might say, well, God has the right because he's God. I mean, he's the creator of the universe, a sustainer of life, a giver of life, and you'd be right there too, but it's not completely the reason that God has a right to tell us how to live, to tell us what to do with our life, how to act in our life. Part of the reason God has that right is if we're a true, blood-bought, born-again child of God, we've received the forgiveness and grace and mercy of God through His Son, Jesus Christ, by the aid of Calvary. And you look at that and you say, well, that gives God the right. When I surrender my life to His Lordship and His forgiveness, that gives God the right to tell me how to live. And that's part of the answer. Part of the answer. So I'll ask it again. What gives God the right to tell me how to live? What gives God the right to tell me what I should do or shouldn't do in my day-to-day life? What gives God the right and the privilege in our lives? Now, part of it is because we know Christ as our Lord and Savior, right? Part of it is that God has given us that forgiveness, grace, and mercy. But what in our lives gives God the right or the privilege to say, thou shalt not lie, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness? What gives God the right to tell me who I can marry or who I can be in relationship with? What gives God the right to tell me what I can and cannot do with my physical body? What gives God the right for that? Now, I want you to really think about it because I think it's not intended to be any kind of a trick question, but it is kind of important how we answer it. And so I'm gonna try to answer it a little bit tonight. I'm saying good evening to a few other folks. Brother Ron, Miss Karen, good evening. Brother John, good to see you out there. I think I said hi to Sandy, but if not, hi Sandy. All right, y'all got your Bibles open? Y'all wanna follow along with me? Go in your Bible to chapter 4 of 1 Thessalonians. Chapter 4, 1 Thessalonians. Now the premise of tonight's Bible study is, what gives God the right to tell me how to live my life? What gives God the right to tell me what I should do with this body? What gives God the right? Part of the answer is, He's God. Part of the answer is, if I have received the forgiveness, love, and mercy of Jesus Christ as my Lord and my Savior, that causes me to be in a surrendered relationship to him as Lord. But there's one more facet to this. And some of you are gonna think, well, that's too obvious. Some of you are gonna think, Preacher, I get it, but that isn't that deep. It's deeper than you think. Because some of you have already argued with me in your mind. Somebody who watches this video might argue with the premise of my question. What do you mean God has a right to tell me what to do with my body? God has a right to tell me the people I can have a relationship with. What do you mean God has a right to tell me what I can and cannot do with my life? Well, I wanna take you to what the Bible gives me as an answer to that question tonight. So are you ready? Did I get all of us thinking in the right direction? Let's go to 1 Thessalonians chapter four, And and let's look at this passage together furthermore Then we beseech you brethren. So all Paul is saying is we're pleading with you brethren And even though he doesn't say it. He's also speaking to the sister ends out there also brothers and sisters of the faith He says we beseech you therefore We beseech you therefore brethren and exhort you by the Lord Jesus that as you have received of us how you ought to walk and please God. Now that's the premise of my question tonight, right? Pleasing God. Why do I have a responsibility to please him? And I already saw Brother Ron, you said, because God created us. That's also part of the equation, isn't it? He created us in his image, that we might be known by him and know him. That's all part of this study tonight, but let's go a little bit further. Let's look, and Miss Felicia, you're getting warmer, all right? Look at what he says. He says, that as you have received of us how you ought to walk and to please God, so you would abound more and more. Now Paul is simply telling the church of Thessalonica, we want you to get better and better, stronger and stronger. Spiritually grow more and more every single day, right? Then he comes to verse two and he says, for you know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. So again, God gives us directives. commandments, things that we are responsible to keep in our lives. And he says, verse three, now watch this example, and somebody may watch this video tonight and they may miss this altogether, or you might start an internal argument with the preacher. But I'm going to tell you what the Bible says, and I'm going to tell it to you straight. Here's what he says in verse three. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification." Now, he's already said, we beseech you that you would grow up in the Lord. That's really what he was saying in verse one. Now he says, here is the will of God for your life as a believer. He says, even your sanctification. What's sanctification mean? Sanctification is learning to live relationship to Christ and Growing up spiritually It is sanctification is the process of growing up spiritually and You and watch this now. Are you ready? Here's the first big here's the first big punch tonight watch what he says in verse 3 and That you should abstain from fornication Abstain means completely deny, get away from, don't participate in. Abstain means the absence of fornication. What is fornication? Fornication is any sexual immorality. Any sexual immorality. It is not enough, and we're gonna show you this in a moment, it is not enough to say that means adultery only. No, it doesn't. Any sexual immorality that would hinder your union between a husband and wife should be abstained. I'm gonna show you something here in a minute. So he goes a little bit further and I want to say welcome to a few other people Brother Frank and brother John you're you're warm on the answer to miss Stephanie. Good to see you Let's keep going with the scriptures tonight. Okay, first Thessalonians chapter 4 Verse 4 that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor now in verse 4 you can actually apply that in two ways. Vessel means wife of the husband. That's one way that the word vessel is used here. So in other words, the sex is intended to be, honorable sex is between a husband and a wife, no one or nothing else that would hinder that union or that oneness that is embraced and celebrated between a husband and wife. But the word vessel can also refer to our individual body, our individual self. And in today's times, we have to watch that because there is so much, so much sexual innuendo and so many sexual images, so much availability on the web for pornography and all kinds of deviation, is the word I'm looking for, bad stuff. Okay, and so you recognize there's a lot of stuff out there that tries to gain your eyes attention away from and to create lust within your heart and I can tell some of my family and friends are kind of blushing at this conversation But here's what the Bible is teaching Paul is talking to the church of Thessalonica and he says remember earlier we talked about this in chapter 3 he says what you came away from Don't let it continue to be a part of your life. Don't dabble with your old way of life. Keep growing up in the Lord. That's what he talks about in chapter four. Keep growing in the Lord. Don't stop growing up under the head, Jesus Christ, the one who is your life. And so then he says, for an example, he says, abstain from any form of sexual immorality. Anything that brings about lustful thought or lustful ideas outside the context of marriage is fornication. Now watch this. He goes on and he says, And in verse 5, he says, not in the lust of consipants, even as the Gentiles which know not God. Now there's the key for the Apostle Paul talking to the church of Thessalonica, isn't it? His key is that word consipensis, I'm not even talking right tonight, consipensis, that word just simply means a lust that draws you away. And it's in the consciousness of your mind. It creates and cultivates a drawing away in your mind away from the right use of love, sex, in marriage, and all of that stuff. Now watch this. So here's what he says, he says, when you allow yourself to be consumed with the worldly ideas of sex and the worldly ideas of that kind of immorality, you're acting like the unbelievers. That's what he's talking about in verse five. Then he comes to verse six and he says, for an example, that no man go beyond to defraud his brother in any matter, because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified." And Paul's saying, don't let this come into the life of the church, that sexual immorality would be your pursuit. Don't defraud a brother by taking another man's wife and lusting after somebody else's spouse. You say, preacher, I've never heard you be this direct and graphic. Well, I'm just telling you the scripture. This is what the Bible says. I'm just explaining it. So he says, verse seven is where I'm driving to. Verse seven, here's what he says. For God has not called us to uncleanness, but unto holiness. So you again look at this question that I started out our Bible study with tonight. Why does God have a right to tell us how to live? Why does he have a right to tell us who we can love? Why does he have a right to give us directives about what we should do with our own body, this thing called the vessel? Why does he have a right to tell us that? And then he comes to verse seven and he says, for God has not called us. So part of the answer that I want to share with you tonight is your calling. You did not pursue God first. God pursued you first. If you're watching this video and you're interested to lean into this point of the video, then follow this point I'm about to make. You did not pursue God because your human nature is bent away from the things of God. The only way that you and I ever turn toward God is because the Holy Spirit of God uses the testimony and the words of people, the music of the Christian faith. He does something that begins to conjure up in your spirit Something that lures you into a relationship with God, that brings you into a relationship with God, that interests you into a relationship with God. So then, when you say, yes, God, forgive me for my sin, cleanse me of all unrighteousness. And then he says, and we say, come and live in my life. The first part of my answer to my question tonight is this. He says, God has called you to holiness. Part of the answer is God has a calling on your life and mine. My first calling is not to be a preacher. My first calling is not to be a pastor. My first calling is not even to a relationship with my wife or our children. My first calling in life is to a relationship with a holy God, thereby he institutes within me and constitutes within me a desire to live holy. to live a pure life before Him. And that's what chapter four is all about in the first part of it. It's all about Paul saying, I plead with you, I beg you, live a life that is worthy of God. Live a life that is worthy of the death of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary for the payment of your sin and mine. Live a life that is holy, set apart for the purposes of God. So you say, go back to your original question, preacher. Why does God have a right? I still haven't answered that, have I? I've said to you that he's called you to be holy. But why does he have a right to tell you to be holy? Why does he have a right to command you to be holy? Why does he have a right to tell you to be holy? Well, it's answered for us in the next verse, verse eight. Are y'all with me? Verse eight, look at this. He therefore that despises, despises not man, But God, look at verse eight, y'all with me? I haven't put y'all to sleep yet, have I? Verse eight, look at this. He says, but God, who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit. The reason God has a right to command anything from his children, to demand anything from his children, is because we are the vessels of God that are inhabited by his Holy Spirit. We become a tabernacle of the presence of the Lord. Why does he have a right to tell you to live holy? Why does he have a right to tell you to not commit fornication? Why does he have a right to tell you to not let lust build in your heart and in your mind? Why does he have a right to tell you who you can marry and who you cannot marry? If you are a true blood-bought, born-again child of God, he earns that right because he has his Holy Spirit living on the inside of you and me. And if the Holy Spirit is living inside us, then God wants to see that that Spirit is protected, guarded, watched out for, fed, loved, listened to, responded to, So God inhabits his children with his Holy Spirit. The reason God has, because listen, why the Bible says in another place, why would God want his spirit to be joined with anything that is unholy? When you and I make an allegiance with someone or something that goes against the commandments and the directives of God, we're making the Holy Spirit in us participate in whatever that is. That breaks the heart of God and it quenches the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Now, I'm talking to believers in this room tonight. Believers need to hear this truth tonight. Believers need to know that God has called us to holy living. Not perfect, because we're all going to struggle against the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in our lives. We will never be perfect this side of heaven. Ever, ever, ever, never. However, God says through the Apostle Paul to the church in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, I want you to abound more and more. I want you to grow and learn and understand more and more. I want you to become something more beautiful tomorrow than you were yesterday. I want you to grow in your understanding of the things of God. Isn't that a great sense of our calling? To live holy lives. That is what he asks of us. And if anybody is just tuning in, we're in the book of 1 Thessalonians chapter four, and we've made it down to verse eight. And the statement I'm making right now is, if you have accepted the forgiveness of God, in the aid of the Holy, and in the person of Jesus Christ, and you have received the fullness of the Holy Spirit in you, what are you asking the Spirit of God to participate in in your life? What am I asking the Holy Spirit of God to participate in in my life? Whatever I watch, whatever I listen to, whatever I speak, whatever I participate in. And ladies and gentlemen, the reason Paul talks about fornication primarily in chapter four is because that is one of the most egregious affronts to the Spirit of God. Why? Because sexual immorality is done within the body. Now think about this, you and I who are true believers in Jesus Christ, we make up the body of Christ, which is also known as the bride of Christ, right? He's the groom of heaven, we're the bride of Christ. Think about that, something very, very beautiful. God has called us to live holy, pure lives. Anybody just tuning me in might hear that and say, oh, that preacher's talking about living sinless perfection. It'll never happen. Not without the aid of Jesus Christ covering our sin and cleansing us of all unrighteousness. Listen to me. But it doesn't change the fact of what we're to aspire to. All of us have a responsibility to aspire to holy, righteous living. Loving God and living for God matters. And what we do with our body, the temple of God in the aid of the Holy Spirit, what we do with this body matters to God. And He, if you're a true believer, He's earned the right. to tell you stop it. He's earned the right to tell you change your attitude. He's earned the right to tell you don't lust after someone who is not your spouse. He has a right to tell us don't let pornography fill the spirit of your mind. Don't you know that quenches the Holy Spirit of God in you? It's about living a holy life. Living a holy life means I abstain from anything that will quench the work and the aid of the Holy Spirit in my life. I want to do everything I can to put God first, because listen, this world is hard. Life is tough. Circumstances are overwhelming. We need the aid of the Holy Spirit. We need the power of the Holy Spirit. We need the strength and the fire of the Holy Spirit. We need the breath and wind of the Holy Spirit. We need all the glory of the Holy Spirit operating in our lives just to get through one more day in this crazy world. And whenever we allow ourselves to join up with something that hinders that spirit or quenches that spirit, then we lose. Did you all just hear what I said? We lose. We lose the battle. We lose the desire. We lose the interest. We lose the passion and compassion. We lose the empathy. We lose the power. I said power. We lose so much if the Holy Spirit is quenched on the inside of our lives. Well, he says in verse, he says in verse eight, he says, he has given unto us this Holy Spirit, and then he comes to verse nine, and that's where I'm gonna close tonight. Verse nine says this, he says, but as touching brotherly love, that's spiritual love, has nothing to do with anything immoral or inappropriate or improper, he says, but as touching brotherly love, He says, you need not that I write unto you, for you yourselves are taught of whom? You're taught of God, how to love one another. He says, and you, now think about this. Who teaches us how to love one another? God does, how? In the aid of the Holy Spirit. One of the part of the fruit of the spirit is love. He teaches us how to love each other, spiritually speaking, and without the aid of the Holy Spirit, we don't really know how to love each other. We'll use one another, we'll abuse one another, we'll misunderstand one another, we'll misrepresent one another, we'll betray one another. But if we love one another spiritually, that means the Holy Spirit of God is teaching us and showing us how we're to care for one another in the body of Christ. He says in verse 10, he says, and indeed you do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia, but we beseech you, brother, that you increase more and more, that you increase more and more. That's how the chapter started in verse one, that you would abound more and more. The principle here is growing up in Christ Jesus. in the aid of the Holy Spirit that dwells inside your spirit life and that the Holy Spirit, now follow me and I'll close with the devotion part. By the way, if you have a prayer request, put it in the comment section, all right? But listen, as I close this devotion, listen to me. I started out with the big question, why does God have a right to command you to live a holy life? Why does he have a right to tell you how you can live, who you can love? Why does God have a right? He has that right because he's called you to himself to be holy and righteous. He's called you as a vessel that holds the Holy Spirit. Now think about this. Listen, listen, listen, listen. Why would God want you and I to be vessels that house the Holy Spirit and then go places and do things that would misrepresent Christ, that would misrepresent the Holy Spirit, that would misrepresent His power, love, and sound mind? Why would God want us to do anything that would diminish the holiness of God or the holiness of the Holy Spirit that's working on the inside of us? And the answer is, ladies and gentlemen, He has sealed you until the day of your redemption. He has sealed you with the Holy Spirit and the power of the Holy Spirit, the love of the Holy Spirit, the presence of the Holy Spirit is dwelling on the inside of you if You are a true believer if you are following Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. That is absolutely the entire essence of tonight's lesson. Why does God have a right? Because He's got His Spirit living in you. And as long as there is a part of God dwelling inside you, He has a right to tell you how to live. He has a right to tell you who you can love. He has a right to tell you what you can do with your body. He has a right to tell us how we can treat one another. He has a right to hold us accountable for that. That's God, not preacher, not a pastor. You don't owe anything to me, I'm just a preacher of the gospel. You and I need to recognize this is not about man, this is about us and God. God has a right. If you possess the Holy Spirit, you got him living in you. If he is living in you, then he gets to tell you what to do with that spirit. He gets to tell you what not to do against that spirit. And ladies and gentlemen, the greatest affront there is to the Holy Spirit in our lives is when we do something that goes directly against the word and the principle of God, And it quenches the Holy Spirit in us, the fire, the glory, the wonder of His love and the Spirit of God on the inside. And anything we do that quenches that is an affront to God. And God says, that shouldn't even happen among my people. The people who are called by my name, that's a scripture that comes to my mind from Chronicles. The people who are called by my name should humble themselves, pray, seek my face, turn from their wicked ways. and cry out to God in heaven for him to heal our land. You say, preacher, what is our hope? Our hope is nothing less than Jesus Christ and his righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus name. That is absolutely the principle that I want to drive, drive, drive into your mind and your heart tonight. God is not expecting us to live perfect and always be right and always do the right thing, but he does expect holy living. And he has a right to expect it because you have the possession of God in the aid of the Holy Spirit living in you. As long as a piece of God is in you, then that presence of God, he has a right to defend it, he has a right to watch out for it, he has a right to tell us how we can take care of that spirit, he has every right to tell us how we can live according to his plan and taking care of that presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. And maybe you've got this far into this lesson and you're asking yourself this question, do I have the Holy Spirit of God living in me? Don't let any man tell you that there is Don't let them tell you that there's something that you have to do in order to have the Holy Spirit. The only thing we are responsible to do is to respond to God's everlasting love. For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him would not perish but would have everlasting life. That's what you have to make peace with right now. You say, how do I know that I can possess the presence of God in me? Well, you've got to make room for him. You say, how do I make room for him? You have to be willing to realize that there is so much sin and there's so much garbage of the world in your heart that you've got to be willing to package all that up and say, Lord, I'm throwing this down at the foot of the cross and I'm going to make an exchange. You take all of my sin, cleanse it, purify me by the blood of Jesus, and I lay it down at the foot of the cross and God, now there's room in my heart to be filled with the aid of the Holy Spirit in me. That's what it means to be a true blood-bought, born-again child of God. Would you like to receive that kind of relationship right here, right now? You can. I'm not able to pray you into heaven. but I can take what God has already spoken to you, and I can give you the words to express to him that you could have peace with God right now. You say, well, I want that peace. Then you bow your head if you're able to, and you pray this prayer. As long as you mean it with your whole heart, you pray this prayer. You say, dear God, I am a sinner. My life is filled with sin. things that I've done against you, ways that I've broken your commandments and rules. God, I'm sorry. Would you please forgive me? Will you apply the blood of Jesus to me to cleanse away all of my sin? And will you come and live in my life in the aid of the Holy Spirit? Teach me now, Lord, how to love you the rest of my life. I pray this prayer in Jesus' name, amen. If you prayed that prayer with me, send me a note or a message and let me know through instant messenger, Facebook, let me know that you prayed that prayer with me and I'll follow up with you. But most important, more important than anything is get to church on Sunday. Find a church close to your home that teaches the Bible, preaches the Bible, and demonstrates the Bible in the life of the church that people will love you and accept you, and that people are going to love you to a closer walk with God. That's what we need to be looking for in our spiritual life. I love each and every one of you. I'm thankful for each and every one of you, and I am thankful that you've spent this time with me tonight. I hope that you have found this time to be beneficial. Brothers and sisters, family of faith, friends of mine, If you found some good out of this lesson tonight, would you please like the lesson and share it to your timeline? It's very simple to just share it and see if there's anybody else out there that might watch this video and find a relationship to Jesus Christ. That's all this is for. Well, that's my main goal, but I do this for you. I do this for you. For those of you who are believers, I want to encourage you and I want to exhort you to never, ever, ever give up in your relationship with the Lord. And if in fact you've ever given in to one of those lustful things in life, God is just a repentant prayer away. Now, I know we have some very, very big needs. Now I'm going to turn my focus to our brothers and our sisters so we can pray, so we can pray together about these needs. Bob Fuzon is in the hospital. He's been in the hospital this week, very, very sick. They've removed a lot of fluid off of his heart, around his heart. He's still in the hospital. Pray for Brother Bob, pray for Felicia. We love them so much and we want them to feel the love in our prayers. So please pray for them. Shirley Bailey is home from the hospital. She's been in the hospital. They removed a pint of fluid off of her lungs as well. And so she's been dealing with a lot of physical issues. So Shirley Bailey needs our prayers. And then Ricky Rexroth is in the hospital right now with pneumonia. And so they're supposed to be leaving in a week or two to go back to Florida. So we're praying for his well-being that he would be made better through as he's dealing with his cancer treatments. Pneumonia is not good to deal with when you're already not feeling so good. So pray for Ricky and Joyce. We love them so much. Pray for them. Pray for Ricky to find healing in his life. So if there's, I didn't see any new prayer requests coming across tonight, but let me pray together with you right now. Can we do that? For those of you who are willing to pray and able to pray with me, brothers and sisters, let's agree to these needs. And Heavenly Father, We thank you and praise you for this time together. We thank you and praise you for our lives being able to connect even if it's through a video screen, God. I just feel the love of your people and I'm thankful for each and every one who has participated tonight. I pray that the message has been an encouragement and a challenge in our spiritual lives. I pray God tonight, especially for those three main prayer needs that I'm so heavy hearted about, and that's Bob Fuson, and we're praying for Ricky Rexroad, and we're praying for Shirley Bailey. Heavenly Father, I pray for your intervention. I pray for your power. I pray for your authority. I pray God for your strength. I pray for every thing that you can throw from the heavenly realm, I'm praying for every resource available, Father God, to meet the needs in those three lives, especially right now. God, I pray for others in the room. I think about Kim Karras and the needs that she has in her family. I pray for Lonnie and Stephanie and the needs they have physically, Father, and the provision for his transplant in the future. I think about Brother Jim Pogue and Brother Jack, and I think about Shelly and Tanya, Heavenly Father, all who are just praying for some relief, praying for some direction, praying for some affirmation of your presence in their lives. God, I give all of these needs to you. I pray, Heavenly Father, for every person who has suffered through the trial and the storms of life, in the hurricanes and the flooding, Heavenly Father, I pray for every life that you would dispatch those resources of heaven to meet those people where they're at and to bring aid to them. I pray Heavenly Father for Ron and Joni, for physical needs that they have, Father God, I love them so much and I lift them up to you, Father. I pray for, I just pray, Father God, for the nation of Israel, Father, and the fight and the conflict that is there. Father, would you please intervene and create calm and peace and give assurance of your presence in that situation. We love you, God. We ask you to continue to make us know who you are in our day-to-day life. And for everything you do for us and in us, we will give you the praise and thanks, for we ask it in the most wonderful name that we know, the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen. God bless you. Thank you all for being out there with me tonight. I love you. I look forward to seeing you Beacon Baptist Church Sunday We're located in 918 East McKay Road for anybody who's not familiar with us And you've watched this long in the video We're in Shelbyville, Indiana. We'll welcome you into the fellowship just for a conversation and time in the word. We'd love to have you come and worship with us. We're going to continue to pray for y'all. I love you. Like the video if you think there's value in it. Share the video if you think there's value in it. So maybe we'll reach one more soul with the gospel of Jesus Christ. God bless you.
