“ Summary, Part 3 (final) ”
b) Make difficult decisions in order to obey Him. MT 8:22. c) Be prepared to make a change in occupation. MT 9:9. d) Practice radical self-denial and identification with a despised Master. LK 9:23. e) Cast off any idols that prevent you from giving yourself wholly to Christ. MT 19:21. f) Hold to the promise of being honored by God and receiving eternal reward for serving Christ. JN12:26 – Christ is where His servants are; He does not give us orders and then abandon us. HOW MUCH MORE SHALL THE BLOOD OF CHRIST, WHO THROUGH THE ETERNAL SPIRIT OFFERED HIMSELF WITHOUT SPOT TO GOD, PURGE YOUR CONSCIENCE FROM DEAD WORKS TO SERVE THE LIVING GOD? - HEB 9:14

“ Summary, Part 2 ”
Annesley: “Where prayer does not lead, repentance will follow…it is a desperate adventure to sin upon hopes of repentance.” When we plan to sin, we take the first step down the road to apostasy. For many in Hell, the day of repentance never came. Often, prayer is the key to blessing. Do we pray before we engage in our entertainments, new relationships, or future plans? What do we know about them? Do we ask if God will bless them? James says if we pray for such wisdom, God will gladly give it to us. If we maintain our consciences in this manner, we will spare ourselves much repentance. 4. IF YOU WOULD MAINTAIN A GOOD CONSCIENCE, FOLLOW THE LORD WITHOUT RESERVATION: THINKING, SPEAKING, AND ACTING AS HE WOULD IF HE WERE ON EARTH. As is commonly said today, “What would Jesus do?” This means that we must know Him. Of course, we are limited in many ways He was not, so He taught us to pray: “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Christ is not only our Savior, but He is our premier example. To be a “Christian” is to be “of Christ”. He never sinned, He did the will of His Father cheerfully and with thanks, even to death. Six practical applications for following His example: a) Be a witness for Christ, seeking to win others to Him. MT 4:19.

“ Summary, Part 1 ”
Continuing this week: 2. IF YOU WOULD MAINTAIN A GOOD CONSCIENCE, LIVE BY THE ADVICE THAT YOU GIVE TO OTHERS. The honest charge of hypocrisy is one of the most stinging charges we can face. Imagine a doctor prescribing treatment for a patient that he wouldn’t prescribe for himself. a) Hypocrites are liars. “Hypocrisy” comes from a Greek word meaning to wear a mask. b) Religious hypocrites bear a greater sin because they add self-righteousness to their hypocrisy. “A man who does not practice what he preaches destroys what he builds.” Why should others hear us if they see a glaring contradiction between our actions and our counsel? c) If others hear us, we must hear them. David qualified himself as a prophet because he heeded the hurtful criticisms that ultimately healed him. We cannot be helpful if we abide in the realm of hypocrisy. 1 TIM 4:6 – Paul appeals to Timothy’s observance of the doctrine he teaches. 1 COR 11:1 – Paul sets himself up as an example, as he proclaims Christ to be his example. 3. IF YOU WOULD MAINTAIN A GOOD CONSCIENCE, DO NOTHING ON WHICH YOU MAY NOT PRAY FOR GOD’S BLESSING. David could not pray for blessing in his sin with Bathsheba. 1 TIM 4:4-5 – the sanctifying power of prayer.
