He Who is of God Hears God's Words

52

There is a common cliché that expresses what we observe in today's text: They were talking past one another. That is, the unbelieving Jews of Jesus' day were trying to engage Him in one conversation that was based upon their presuppositions, and He responds by overthrowing their presuppositions and reveals deep spiritual truths. For the Jews, their entire spiritual life was merely external. This was shown most dramatically in their claim of Abrahamic parentage and, by extension, a unique divine relationship. It was formally true, of course, that they were the physical descendents of Abraham, but their genetic connection with the great Patriarch was ultimately beside the point. In response to their boast of being the children of Abraham, the Lord tells them a painful truth; they were not his children in the most important sense. Rather, they had a much more sinister patrimony. Their true father was seeking the destruction of the Kingdom of God and the King of that Kingdom was the primary target. They were simply following in the footsteps of their spiritual father as they sought to destroy the Lord's message and failing that, the Messiah Himself. The Jews' spiritual pride and crass materialism was their undoing. It is also a good example for us. – Pastor Schlegel
