Let us look a little more closely at Christ giving his law to his people. During that final Passover celebration, Christ broke with centuries of Jewish tradition to do something absolutely new, something truly staggering. Taking the bread and the cup, he established his supper to serve as a perpetual reminder of himself in the new covenant, and this by way of command to his disciples: ‘This is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me... This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is shed for you’ (Luke 22:19-20). And ‘supper being ended’ (John 13:2), Jesus, having washed his disciples’ feet, gave them more of his law:
