Who was dying when Jesus was hanging on the cross? Some only imagine a weakly and helplessly dying man when they are asked to describe His death. Others think too much about the aspect of His deity and falsely suppose that he did not really feel any pain. Both extremes must be rejected. It was the God-man, Jesus, who was dying on the wooden cross. But is that all there is when we talk about the identity of the crucified Messiah? Matthew emphatically testifies another aspect of His identity - Jesus' kingship. As we celebrate Palm Sunday today, we will examine Matthew's description of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and learn that it was the King who was dying for His people.
