The people of God have traveled a long way to Mount Sinai, and they arrive with a promise from God and a call to obedience. God calls them to consecrate themselves in order to prepare to meet with Him. The people cleanse themselves and boundaries are set up, lest the people touch the holy mountain of God and be struck down. God comes in a whirlwind of thick cloud, an earthquake, and a loud trumpet call. The people are terrified. God shows His glory in preparation for the giving of the Law. Moses serves as a Mediator for the people throughout the Exodus and here at Mount Sinai. Christ is our better mediator of a new covenant, which he has sealed with his own blood. For Christ ascended his own mountain with a cross and was crushed for His people. Our response is reverence for God and trust in His mediator.
