By nature man believes that there is something within him or that he can do something so that God will accepted him or look on him approvingly. However, since all of man's righteousnesses are filthy in the sight of God, man can do nothing to be accepted by God. Man is not basically good; there is no 'spark of divinity' in him. The only way a person is accepted by God is in the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. While the believer strives to live holy, God accepts him in Christ and not for the Christian's works. All our works are incomplete and sinful and, therefore, unacceptable. Nevertheless, God accepts us 'warts and all' in Christ.
