Here in Hebrews 5, the inspired writer is describing to the reader what it is for the Lord Jesus Christ to be their high priest. What does it mean? Really? What was the significance for them in their day? What is the significance for us today? For them, the idea was closer. Today, the idea of the high priest is further away; we need it drawn closer. Through this text, the Spirit shows us that the perfect high priesthood of the Son makes Him the alone source of eternal salvation. We need a High Priest who has been exalted. We need a High Priest who was and is heard by the Father. And we need a HP who can and does save, eternally.
