John informs the Christians that it is the "last days" and in this passage give two imperatives, 1. let that remain in you which you have heard from the beginning (Vs. 24); and 2. Remain in Him (Vs. 28). In these last days when there is either pessimistic inactivity or a frenzy of uninformed activity John counsels the Church on the best way forward Be Calm (Vs. 18) Be Constant (Vs. 24) Be Confident (Vs. 28 cf. 4:17)
