Today we are beginning a brief 3-week study of a short, personal letter that the Apostle Paul wrote to a man named Philemon. If we do not keep in mind that this letter is designed by God to help tell the gospel message, we can very quickly be led astray into misunderstanding it’s meaning. Because this letter addresses some very important themes, like Christian love, God’s providence, the art of Christian persuasion & how we must address social ills.
We are going to look at all of those themes over the next few weeks but if we consider anyone of them—or all of them together—apart from the great theme of what God has done for sinners in Jesus Christ then we will inevitably misunderstand this letter and will miss the significant impact it can make in our lives together as God’s people in this church.
