The time of the end mentioned in this verse refers to the time of the end of Daniels 70 week prophecy. This new king spoken of here was not the king of the north or south. It was the King Herod. Herod did do according to his will as nobody could stop him from building and conquering who he wished. He exalted himself in that he was not appointed King; he asked Antony Octavian and the Senate to appoint him king. Herod magnified himself above every god, man and even the God of Gods. Dan 11:37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. Herod was raised in the Jewish faith and chose not to follow after the God of his father, nor did he care for any god in particular.
